University of Cape Town BOLUS LIBRARY 1 ABSTRACT The perennation of orchids is poorly understood, in particular that of the Orchidoidae. The understanding of perennation in the Orchidoidae is important because the root-stem tuberoid .is used as the one character defining the Orchidoidae as a monophyletic group. The root-stem tuberoid has never been examined for variation before. This project focuses on perennial growth in the Diseae in order to study the structbre and function of the root stem tuberoid in relation tp other organs and to contribute to the understanding of Orchidoid phylogeny. , INTRODUCTION Host te1perate monocotyledons have evolved underground resting or perennating organs for the climatically unfavourable season (Holttum 1955). A period of underground existence may allow a plant to escape unfavourable conditions, to counter environmental uncertainty, and to build reserves for flowering episodes (Calvo 1990). This is especially evident in the temperate members of the Orchidaceae and is made possible through sympodial growth· (Withnerj1974). Not .all temperate orchids have a resting period although they do have sympodial growth and do perennate. -

Hence, the regeneration phase represents a vulnerable stage of the plant life cycle. In laboratory-based experiments we investigated the effect of desiccation on the survival of newly emerged seedlings of 23 proteoid species (Leucadendron and Protea) occurring in a wide variety of fynbos habitats. We tested the hypothesis that species of drier habitats would be more tolerant of desiccation than those from more moist areas. Results showed that with no desiccation treatment, or with desiccation prior to radicle emergence, all species germinated to high levels. However, with desiccation treatments imposed after radicle emergence, there were significant declines in seedling emergence after subsequent re-wetting. Furthermore, other than three species that grow in waterlogged habitats, germination responses could not be reliably modeled as a function of soil moisture variables. -

The present geological period has more species than any other, yet the current rate of extinction of species is greater now than at any time in the past. Ecosystems and communities are being degraded and destroyed, and species are being driven to extinction. The species that persist are losing genetic variation as the number of individuals in populations shrinks, unique populations and subspecies are destroyed, and remaining populations become increasingly isolated from one another. The cause of this loss of biological diversity at all levels is the range of human activity that alters and destroys natural habitats to suit human needs.” (Primack, 2002). CapeNature launched its State of Biodiversity Programme (SoBP) to assess and monitor the state of biodiversity in the Western Cape in 1999. This programme delivered its first report in 2002 and these reports are updated every five years. The current report (2007) reports on the changes to the state of vertebrate biodiversity and land under conservation usage. -

They are prioritized in most alien-plant management initiatives in South Africa. The current practice for the restoration of cleared riparian areas relies largely on the unaided recovery of native species from residual individuals and regeneration from soil-stored seed banks. Little is known about the factors that determine the effectiveness of this approach. We need to know how seed banks of native species in riparian ecosystems are affected by invasion, and the potential for cleared riparian areas to recover unaided after clearing operations. Study sites were selected on four river systems in the Western Cape: the Berg, Eerste, Molenaars and Wit Rivers. Plots were selected in both invaded (N75% Invasive Alien Plant (IAP) canopy cover) and un- invaded (also termed reference, with b25% IAP canopy cover) sections of the rivers. -

budget OCTOBERanalysis 2020 1/9 A 1 CITY OF CAPE TOWN 26 OCTOBER 2020 A ASIVIKELANE LET’S PROTECT ONE ANOTHER VOICES OF INFORMAL SETTLEMENT RESIDENTS DURING THE COVID-19 CRISIS WHY THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN COULD AND SHOULD BUDGET TO SPEND MORE ON INFORMAL SETTLEMENT TAPS AND TOILETS IN 2020/2021 by Carlene van der Westhuizen and Albert van Zyl, October 2020 Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, a 2018 study warned that in informal settlements “the unclean- liness of the existing sanitation facilities contributes to health issues like water-borne diseases.” 1 As the last six months of Asivikelane data show, large numbers of Cape Town informal settlement residents share communal taps and toilets, and these high-use facilities are not sufficiently maintained.2 These chal- lenges were highlighted by COVID-19, but they preceded it and will persist and escalate unless the City of Cape Town responds on a much larger scale. Our analysis shows that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Cape Town has not increased its budget allocations for informal settlements taps and toilets in its main 2020/21 budget or subsequent adjustment budgets. The City did, however, budget for an accumulated cash surplus of over R5 billion at the end of the current financial year. The City could therefore afford to scale up its delivery of informal settlement services significantly without posing a risk to its long-term fiscal health. Like every other government in the world, now is the time for the City to dig into its reserves to respond to the current crisis and prevent future crises. -
