Fall 2006 Leadership Conference Speakers

Melodie Powell, Griffiths Leadership Society Co-Chair Melodie received her Bachelor of Arts degree in French from the University of in 1977. She then graduated from MU School of Law in 1981. Currently, Powell is a Senior Associate with Evans & Dixon in Kansas City, where she concentrates her practice in the area of workers compensation defense. Prior to joining Evans & Dixon, Melodie was an attorney in private practice and served as an Assistance Attorney General for the State of Missouri for nine years. An avid MU supporter, Melodie has held several leadership positions with the MU Alumni Association, including serving as president in 1999-2000. She has also served as chairman of the Long Range Planning and Rule committees and as a District Director. Melodie continues to serve as the Alumni Representative on the Chancellor’s Strategic Planning and Resource Advisory Council in addition to serving as a member of LINC, the Leadership Development Committee and as Co-Chairman of the Griffiths Leadership Society. Melodie is also a member of the Jefferson Club and the Tiger Scholarship Fund. In addition to her involvement with MU, Melodie was recently appointed by Governor Matt Blunt as the Chairman of the Kansas City Board of Elections.

Debbie Snellen, Griffiths Leadership Society Co-Chair Debbie is President of Business Class, a company dedicated to training and development options for businesses and organizations. A specialist in strategic planning, management development, organizational development, and communication skills, Debbie has provided seminars and speeches nationwide and in Canada. In June 2003, she joined the faculty of the U.S. Chamber’s Institute for Organizational Management. Debbie received a Bachelor of Science in Education from the Honors Division of the College of Education and a Master of Arts in Speech Communication with an emphasis in Organizational Communication and Training from Mizzou. During her junior and senior year, she proudly wore tiger stripes as Mizzou's tiger mascot (long before Truman was officially named!) Debbie was the 2003-2004 President of the University of Missouri Alumni Association and continues to be active with MUAA, chairing the Sesquicentennial Celebration, the Leadership Development Committee, and is co-chairman of the Griffiths Leadership Society for Women.

Dr. James S. Coleman, Improving the Climate for Women Scientists at MU Presenter Jim is Vice Chancellor for Research and Professor of Biological Sciences here at MU, and has been MU’s chief research officer since May, 2003. As the Vice Chancellor for Research, Dr. Coleman is responsible for overseeing MU’s $220,000,000 research enterprise. He has a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from the University of Maine and a Master of Science, M.Phil. and Ph.D. in physiological ecology from . He has held positions as a postdoctoral researcher in biology at (1987-1988) and (1988-1990) and has 75 peer reviewed publications focusing upon the physiological and ecological responses of plants to natural and human-caused disturbances, as well as the evolutionary ecology of the interactions of plants with insects and diseases. Dr. Coleman’s research program has focused on the integration of cellular, organismal, community and ecosystem approaches to ecological studies. His most current research uses this approach to predict and understand how ecosystems may respond to global environmental change. Jim also serves as a Member of the Board of the Missouri Innovation Center, the Association of Ecosystem Research Centers (AERC), and the Research Alliance of Missouri

Dr. Jacquelyn Litt, Advancing Women Researchers at MU Presenter Jackie is Director of Women’s and Gender Studies and Associate Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Sociology at the University of Missouri, Columbia. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, Dr. Litt is the principal investigator of the NSF MIZZOU ADVANCE project to improve the status of women STEM faculty at MU. She has many articles and presentations related to the status of women faculty in higher education. Her other specialty area is motherhood and inequality, and she has two books on these topics, Medicalized Motherhood ( Press) and Global Dimensions of Gender and Carework (Stanford University Press). Jackie’s current research on motherhood is part of a broader Social Science Research Council project on “Lessons from Katrina.” Her contribution to the project is a book manuscript on the experience and meaning of evacuation and recovery for mothers who fled New Orleans and relocated to mid-Missouri.

Dr. Jeni Hart, Advancing Women Researchers at MU Presenter Jeni is an Assistant Professor in Higher Education and Continuing Education; emphasis in the department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Hart has conducted research on activism among feminist faculty and on diversity and campus climate issues. Broadly, her agenda centers on gender issues, the professions, and organizational transformation within academe. Jeni is interested in shaping policy to enhance equity for historically underrepresented people in colleges and universities and in addressing issues about how gender plays a role in the development of professional academic work.

Dr. Lesa Beamer, Advancing Women Researchers at MU and Success Stories: Meet MU’s Leading Female Presenter Lesa was born in Cleveland, OH and attended Kent State University in Kent, OH where she earned her Bachelor of Science with Honors in Chemistry. Dr. Beamer attended graduate school at School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD and received her Ph.D. in 1991. She was a postdoctoral scholar at the Molecular Biology Institute at UCLA in Los Angeles, where she received a National Research Service Award fellowship from the National Institutes of Health. In 1998, Lesa joined the MU faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Biochemistry and Chemistry Departments, and in 2002 was the recipient of the Dorsett L. Spurgeon, M.D. Distinguished Medical Research Award from the MU School of Medicine. She was promoted to an Associate Professor with tenure in 2004. Her research laboratory specializes in biophysical studies of proteins with relevance to human disease. She also serves as a faculty tutor for the problem based learning curriculum for second year medical students at the MU School of Medicine. Lesa is currently a member of grant review panels for the National Science Foundation and the American Cancer Society.

Kevin Babbitt, Advancing Women Researchers at MU Presenter Kevin Babbitt is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Theatre and has been an actor in MU’s Interactive Theatre Troupe for the past three years. In addition to acting in the troupe, Kevin is now serving as the group’s Assistant Director. Most recently, Kevin served as Chair for the ’s Interactive Workshop at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education conference in 2006 and has been published in Theatre Journal. He is currently studying the troupe’s impact on undergraduate students’ attitudes regarding heterosexism/homophobia on campus.

Dr. Anne Deaton, Aging Gracefully Breakout Session Presenter As a current member of Griffiths Leadership Society, Anne spends most of her time as a community advocate, volunteer and mentor. Currently, Dr. Deaton is an adjunct faculty member and consultant in the MU College of Human Environmental Sciences and the Sinclair School of Nursing. She sits on numerous boards and organizations related to Autism and Aging including the Thompson Center for Autism and Neurological Disorders Advisory Board, MU Center for Excellence on Aging, and the Missouri Autism Response and Research Association (which she organized to coordinate research among major Missouri universities). She also works with MU School of Social Work Advisory Board, Impact Mizzou (mentoring international students), Stand-by Me (mentoring youth/Columbia schools), MU Health Policy Center, MU Peace Studies Program, Fortnightly (supports scholarships at MU), MU Friends of Music, Camp Wonderland (state board/camp program for children with disabilities), and is also the founding member of Step-Up, which helps Rwandan women impacted by genocide. Due to Anne’s outstanding work at MU and the throughout the community, her efforts have received recognition. She was awarded the Missouri Governor's Award for Quality and Productivity in 2000, the Vice-President's Outstanding Extension Achievement Award (University of Missouri), and UMKC Institute for Human Development award for promoting AmeriCorps "Vista MOCAN" Project.

Karla Taylor, Let’s Make a Deal: Why Women Make Less than Men & Negotiating Strategies Breakout Session Presenter Karla Taylor, is a '78 Mizzou graduate and currently a communications consultant in Bethesda, Maryland, where she lives with her husband and two children. She has been a feature writer with the Indianapolis Star as well as editor and publisher of CASE Currents, a national magazine for college fund raisers, alumni administrators, and Public Relations professionals. Currently, Karla does consulting, writing, and editing for clients that range from American Express to Child magazine to the American Society of Association Executives. Her most recent volunteer post for MU was Chair of the Communications Committee for Mizzou, the . Salary negotiation has always been a subject of great fascination; she's convinced it's a skill women neglect at their own peril.

Dr. Marjorie Skubic, Success Stories: Meet MU’s Leading Female Researchers Breakout Session Presenter Marjorie received her Ph.D. in Computer Science at Texas A&M University. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Missouri-Columbia with a joint appointment in Computer Science. Dr. Skubic’s research interests include sensory perception, spatial reasoning, and human-robot interaction. Marjorie has over 80 publications and has served as PI or co-PI for projects funded by the National Science Foundation, The Naval Research Lab, the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Administration on Aging. In addition to her academic experience, she has spent 14 years working in industry for companies such as TRW, Texas Instruments, and Staefa Control System, on real-time applications such as data acquisition and automation.

At Texas A&M University, Marjorie was part of a NASA consortium to study distributed telerobotics. With the University of Missouri, her efforts have turned toward spatial reasoning for semi-autonomous mobile robots. Spatial modeling algorithms capture the qualitative nature of environments using live sensor data and allow communication with robots using typical human relational spatial language. Dr. Skubic’s research group has developed a novel sketch understanding interface that lets the user sketch a hand-drawn map to direct the robot. Finally, in her newest project, her team of engineers and nurses are developing monitoring technology for eldercare, designed to help elders stay safe and independent in their own homes as long as possible.

Dr. Carol L. Lorenzen, Success Stories: Meet MU’s Leading Female Researchers Breakout Session Presenter Carol grew up in Redmond, Washington and received a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science with a Meat Science option from Washington State University in 1987. Under the direction of Jeffrey W. Savell, she completed her Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Animal Science at Texas A&M University in 1993 and 1997, respectively. Her dissertation research was conducted at the USDA Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Nebraska where she studied the rates of protein synthesis and degradation in Callipyge lambs.

In April of 1999, Dr. Lorenzen joined the faculty in the Department of Food Science at the University of Missouri- Columbia as an Assistant Professor to teach and conduct Meat Science research. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2005. The focus of her research has been in the area of red meat quality. Much of Carol’s applied research has focused on the consumer acceptance of beef and pork. In 2005, she received the American Meat Science Association Achievement Award and in 2006 was honored with the Division of Student Affairs Excellence in Education Award from the University of Missouri. She is also the author or co-author of 25 referred journal articles, 34 abstracts, 29 technical papers, and 1 patent disclosure.

Dr. Carol Deakyne, Success Stories: Meet MU’s Leading Female Researchers Breakout Session Presenter Carol received her Ph.D. in Theoretical Chemistry from in 1977 and did her post-doctorate work at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Deakyne spent 11 years with Eastern Illinois University as an Associate Professor and Professor of Chemistry and a Graduate Program Coordinator, respectfully. In 2003, she became an Associate Professor of Chemistry here at the University of Missouri. Carol served for four years on the Advisory Board and as a workshop facilitator for the Expanding Your Horizons Through Math and Science conference, which works to help promote math and science and nontraditional careers to 7th and 8th grade girls. She also mentors undergraduate research students in the Honors College Discovery Fellowship program, which is aimed at high-ability incoming first-year students. Carol has served as Chair of the University of Missouri local section of the American Chemical Society and as Secretary of the Central Massachusetts local section. She has also authored and co- authored numerous publications related to her work in Chemistry.

Sarah Dawson, Fear of Feminism Breakout Session Presenter Sarah is currently completing her Master of Public Administration degree with a focus on organizational and community change. In addition to serving as co-chair of the GLS Programming Committee, she is the Graduate Student Association representative from the Association of MPA Students. Sarah is also employed as an Administrative Assistant for the Missouri United Methodist Foundation. In 2002, Sarah graduated from Mizzou with a Bachelor of Science Cum Laude in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. She lives in Columbia with her husband, Josh D. Henggeler, BAcc & MAcc 2004.

Janet Campbell, Surviving Business Travel Breakout Session Presenter Janet Campbell, Chairman & CEO, is the co-founder of Seno Medical Instruments, Inc. Previously she served as President and Chief Operating Officer of InforMedix, Inc. Janet is a successful serial entrepreneur in the medical device area. She held the position of Chief Executive Officer of Mach Diagnostics, a venture backed medical company focused on rapid diagnostics, where she raised two rounds of capital, and developed an organization that included 40 sales representatives and a nationwide distributor network. She was the founder and President of Health Tech, Inc., a cardiovascular technology company, where she negotiated multi-million dollar licensing and joint venture agreements involving Fortune 500 and early-stage bioscience companies. Janet was the healthcare partner of Rockecharlie & Co., a Houston investment-banking firm. She has extensive venture capital experience, having been a retained consultant to a variety of venture capital funds including the Woodlands Venture Fund (now the Woodlands/Essex Fund), Vanguard Ventures, and the Susquehanna Group. Ms. Campbell was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vascular Genetics, Inc., representing Human Genome Sciences. She currently serves on the Board of Texas Hall of Fame. Janet received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Missouri, and was an honored Alumnus in 2005. She received her Master of Business Administration in Finance from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Kitty Dickerson, Travels of a T-Shirt: The Complex Global Garment Trade Breakout Session Presenter Kitty is a Professor and Chairman in the Department of Textile and Apparel Management at the University of Missouri- Columbia. As a Fellow and past President of the International Textile and Apparel Association, she was recently awarded the Distinguished Scholar Award at the annual meeting. In 2002, she received The Distinguished Faculty Award at MU. Prior to Kitty’s Distinguished Faculty Award, she also received the 's Leadership in International Education Award. She was named to Textile World's "Top Ten Leaders" list and was chosen as ITAA-Bobbin "Educator of the Year." Other awards include the American Fiber Manufacturers Association Research Award and the Textile Award of Merit.

Dr. Dickerson also serves on the Board of Directors of Kellwood Company, a multinational Fortune 700 apparel firm. She has written both Textiles and Apparel in the Global Economy and Inside the Fashion Business, both published by Prentice Hall and used in academe, industry, and government. Dr. Dickerson is also author of more than 80 articles in both scholarly and trade journals and has been invited to address industry and academic audiences in the U.S. and other countries. She has two terrific young adult children, Derek and Donya and works with a wonderful team in her Department.

Leslie Chef Jett, CEC, Guest Speaker Dinner Leslie is a resident instructor in the University of Missouri-Columbia Hotel and Restaurant Management program, which he joined in 2003. He serves as the program’s Research and Operations Coordinator, overseeing the school’s lab-related and foodservice programs. In 1999, Chef Jett earned two Bachelor degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia; Hotel and Restaurant Management and General Agriculture. He also earned his Master’s degree in Career and Technical Education from MU and a culinary degree from Johnson & Wales University in 2001. Leslie is certified as a Corporate Etiquette and International Protocol Consultant from the Protocol School of Washington®, the leader in etiquette and protocol services. He conducts etiquette and protocol training session to more than 2000 university and secondary students annually.

When he is not sharing his love of the culinary arts and protocol with students, Jett serves as a Supply Corp Officer in the United States Navy attached to the Fleet and Industrial Supply Center in Yokosuka, Japan. He also enjoys taking his culinary show on the road - whether traveling with the Navy's Adopt-a-Ship Culinary Training program or volunteering his time cooking for and leading mission trips to Jamaica, Kenya and Tanzania.

Carin Huffman Grinch, High-Speed Connection: Online Social Networks Breakout Session Presenter Carin graduated from Mizzou in 2000 with Bachelor's degrees in History and Political Science. After a year with the , she joined the MUAA staff in fall 2001. Carin is the Assistant Director of Student Programs & Athletic Events and is responsible for planning alumni athletic events such as pre-game spirit rallies and tailgates. She also advises the Alumni Association Student Board and oversees the True Tiger student membership program. Carin handles partnership relations and sponsorships for the MUAA. She is married to Andrew Grinch who is the Director of Marketing for University of Missouri Department of Athletics.

Mary McClure, Influence, Internal Politics and Power Breakout Session Presenter Mary is the Managing Director of McClure Management Consulting. She has also held several significant senior management positions including Vice-President at Hallmark Cards and Board Member of Quik Trip. During Mary’s 20-year career with Hallmark Cards, she led business units as a Vice President and General Manager, successfully managing a $300 million business to record double digit growth. Currently, Mary is on the board for Harvesters, Kansas City’s Food Bank, where she is leading a project to build a demonstration garden. She has served on numerous non-profit boards and committees including Women’s Employment Network, Women’s Seed Fund Committee for the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership, Center for Management Assistance, Best of Missouri Hands/Missouri Artisans, and Mayor’s Executive Committee for the Kansas City Safe City Initiative. She recently became a Master Gardener.

Mary holds a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Science with honors from the University of Missouri. Mary and her husband, Mike Abel, split time between Kansas City and their place in the country near Cameron, Missouri.

Dr. Mary Simon Lueci, Women in Extension: Leading through Nearly a Century of Change Breakout Session Presenter Mary is the Assistant Dean and Community Development Program Director for University of Missouri Extension; which provides leadership for community leadership development, citizen engagement, community decision making, participatory planning, local government, creating inclusive communities, and community emergency management. She is co-founder of the Community Development Academy and has also worked with communities and organizations to help develop extension’s VISTA program, improve rural health care, and facilitate community-based leadership development, community economic development, and community information networks. Mary’s research interests include leadership and organizational learning. She currently chairs the North Central Region Community Development Program Leaders group and serves on the boards of the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development and the Rural Policy Research Institute.

Dr. Pam Benoit, Watercolor Breakout Session Presenter Pam is the Vice Provost for Advanced Studies and Dean of the Graduate School at MU. She has been a faculty member at the University of Missouri for 21 years and the department chair for the five years previous to her work at the Graduate School. She expressed her commitment to teaching initiatives on campus through service on the Committee on Undergraduate Education, the Campus Writing Board, Educational Technologies at Missouri, and Wakonse. Dr. Benoit received the William T. Kemper Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching and the MU Faculty-Alumni Award. Pam’s research interests include: Interpersonal discourse, arguments, and leadership. She wrote Telling the success story: Acclaiming and disclaiming discourse, co-edited a book on argumentation, and is currently working on a text concerning persuasion.

Dr. Lynn Rossy, Yoga Breakout Session Presenter Lynn is a clinical psychologist and Director of the Mindfulness Practice Center at the University of Missouri where she teaches mindfulness meditation and yoga in a variety of settings and classes. She regularly teaches meditation and Insight Dialogue (an interpersonal meditation practice) for Show Me Dharma, an insight meditation group in Columbia. Dr. Rossy is a certified Kripalu Yoga Teacher. She believes that "mindfulness" (living in the present moment without judgment) is a key to making the choices that sustain our individual and collective body, mind, and spirit--what she calls conscious living.
