O Hyde spinner Dan Cranmer acted as stand-in professional for Flowery Field in their Greater Manchester League cup game against Swinton Moorside on Sunday - after receiving league approval. ! MAY 28 NEWSLETTER: p12 ! Cricket touring in Zimbawbe OUR next tour was to Zimbawbe starting in December, 1996, probably the most fascinating of all the trips we made to watch England play overseas. We arrived in Mr. Mugabe’s troubled, but not yet farm-ravaged country in early December for a tour which was not universally supported at home, comprising three ODIs and two Tests - and very few tourists. We flew into the second city of Bulawayo and made our home at the Holiday Inn a mile outside the Matabele capital. We were esconced with the players and press and got to know many of them. Unfortunately, Michael Atherton’s team did not enjoy the country and were never in the best form either on or off the field. We took a two-mile walk through avenues of magnificent jacaranda trees to watch the last day of England v Matabeleland at the Bulawayo Athletic Club, the only victory we saw in an entire month. Warrington and Lancashire’s Johnnie Crawley scored a fine . The First Test followed, but not before WTB had ‘detained’ journalist Scyld Berry and lambasted him for regular despatches in his Sunday newspaper discouraging the likes of us from coming out to watch the series. I had another duty, to hand over some Witton Albion FC souvenirs to a young African whose friend had played for the Northwich club in the Vauxhall Conference that season and had written to the secretary asking for some souvenirs. We met him at our hotel after he had walked 10 miles from his home in the bush and was really chuffed when we handed him the mementoes and enough Zim dollars to get into all five days of the Test. We never saw him again and he wrote to the club later saying that he had - understandably - given the money to his mother to keep the household going for a week. Widnes T-shirt for wife? During the Test we met former Widnes all-rounder Grant Flower who was in the Zim team along with big brother Andy. A tour colleague of ours, a huge rugby league fan, went for a walk round the ground wearing a magnificent Widnes T-shirt which was so widely admired that one local, hanging from a tree, offered to trade it in exchange for his wife. This was the famous match England dominated and should have won only for the Zim bowlers to deliver a succession of ‘wides’ in the last half-hour to force a draw. This is what caused team manager David Lloyd to maintain “We flippin’ murdered ‘em’. We actually overheard this interview in the outfield and he didn’t say ‘flippin’. The players steadfastly declined to get out and about on days off, so missed trips like the one we took by jeep across 150 miles of bush to visit Old Zimbabwe, an ancient city said to be 2,000 years old. And another to see the magnificent tomb of Cecil Rhodes deep in the Matopos Hills. The team lost an ODI, then partied into the early hours on the last night in the hotel before moving on to . To see Darren Gough and Robert Croft standing on a table in a packed bar belting out “Delilah” with Ian Botham on the piano was an image which has stayed with us until this day. Happy Memories.
