(top left and right) By Jessica Stein Granada Hills Charter High School’s (GHCHS) International Baccalaureate (IB) seniors are in the process of presenting their creativity, action, and service projects (CAS). IB students are work- ing within the school and outside in the community to improve and assist wherever they can. While some students have created programs within the school, such as Project Bridge which works with special education stu- dents, other students look to help areas outside of school, such as Project Greenification. Project Greenification in particular takes place at Ingenium Charter Elementary School where five IB stu- dents have created a program; volunteering their time by tutoring, painting murals, and helping out overall at the school. Along with their CAS projects, seniors must complete evalua- tions in each of their classes at the end of this year. Unlike tradi- tional testing that usually involves strict multiple choice questions and written responses, IB students are tested in multiple aspects including an extended essay, oral commentary, critical thinking and analysis evaluations, and novel assessments. The students have to review the general material ahead of time and, upon their testing day, are given a specific topic and a limited amount of time to prepare their answers and commentary. Specifi- cally, for the oral commentary portion, they are given a poem and have 20 minutes to review and prepare a response, and then must Student Nathan comment for eight minutes on the topic. The small community of students provides for a more intimate educational experience. The IB teachers help nurture students by providing support and involving the students in study groups in order to assure that each student excels. The students and their projects make a huge impact both on and off campus. The hopes for this program is to expand and become more involved in the community. “I always tell the students to keep as many doors open as long as possible. Through their projects and helping those in need they are not only opening doors for themselves, but others in the com- munity. I believe this gives them the advantage of knowing how to lead and brainstorm new ideas for future endeavors,” IB coordina- tor Nicholas Weber said.
