Lauridsen5 Abstract Background: Modern cold-water coral and tropical coral environments harbor a highly diverse and ecologically important macrofauna of crustaceans that face elevated extinction risks due to reef decline. The effect of environmental conditions acting on decapod crustaceans comparing these two habitats is poorly understood today and in deep time. Here, we compare the biodiversity, eye socket height as a proxy for eye size, and body size of decapods in fossil cold-water and tropical reefs that formed prior to human disturbance. Results: We show that decapod biodiversity is higher in fossiltropicalreefsfromTheNetherlands,Italy,and Spain compared to that of the exceptionally well-preserved Paleocene (Danian) cold-water reef/mound ecosystem from Faxe (Denmark), where decapod diversity is highest in a more heterogeneous, mixed bryozoan-coral habitat instead of in coral and bryozoan-dominated facies. The relatively low diversity at Faxe was not influenced substantially by the preceding Cretaceous/Paleogene extinction event that is not apparent in the standing diversity of decapods in our analyses, or by sampling, preservation, and/or a latitudinal diversity gradient. Instead, the lower availability of food and fewer hiding places for decapods may explain this low diversity. Furthermore, decapods from Faxe are larger than those from tropical waters for half of the comparisons, which may be caused by a lower number of predators, the delayed maturity, and the increased life span of crustaceans in deeper, colder waters. -

PALAEOENVIRONMENTAL INTERPRETATION OF THE TRIASSIC SANDSTONES OF SCRABO, COUNTY DOWN, NORTHERN IRELAND: ICHNOLOGICAL AND SEDIMENTOLOGICAL STUDIES INDICATING A MIXED FLUVIATILE-AEOLIAN SUCCESSION JAMES O. BUCKMAN, PHILIPS. DOUGHTY,MICHAEL J. BENTON and ANDREW J. JERAM (Received 19 May 1997) Abstract The Sherwood Sandstone Group at Scrabo, Co. Down, NorthernIreland, has been variously interpretedas aeolian or fluviatile. The sedimentological and ichnological data show that these sandstone-dominatedfacies were deposited within a mixed fluviatile-aeolian regime, in which fluviatile processes were responsible for the majorityof the preservedsedimentary sequence. The sequence contains a moderately diverse non-marine ichnofauna comprising the invertebratetrace fossils Biformites, Cruziana/Rusophycus(Isopodichnus), Herpystezoum(Unisulcus), Planolites, 'small arthropodtrackways', 'large arthropodtrackways' (cf. in part Paleohelcura), and the vertebrate trace fossil Chirotherium? (as well as a number of other, presently unnamed, vertebrate footprints). The recorded ichnofauna greatly increases that previously known from the Irish Triassic, comparesfavourably with that from the rest of Europe, and representsthe only known Irish locality for reptiliantrackways. This study presents a re-evaluation of the arthropod ichnotaxa of the Cruziana rugosa Group from bio- and/or lithostratigraphically well-defined Lower to Upper Ordovician siliciclastic sections of southern and central Bolivia. With the exception of Cruziana rouaulti, the ichnofaunas contain all the members of the Cruziana rugosa Group throughout the Ordovician (Arenig to Caradoc) successions in Bolivia. The Bolivian material therefore indicates that these arthropod ichnofossil assemblages are suitable for recognizing Ordovician strata in Bolivia. These findings cast doubt on their use as reliable indicators for a global intra-Ordovician (Arenig to Caradoc) biozonation of Peri-Gondwanan sedimentary successions. These beds reach their greatest thickness in depressions between topographic highs and thin towards, and finally disappear on, the crests. The early Late Kimmeridgian graded packstone–bindstone alternations represent the earliest plattenkalk occurrence in southern Germany. The undisturbed lamination of the sediment strongly points to oxygen-free conditions on the seafloor and within the sediment, inimical to higher forms of life. The plattenkalk contains a diverse biota of benthic and nektonic organisms. Excavation of a 13 cm thick plattenkalk unit across an area of 80 m2 produced 3500 fossils, which, with the exception of the bivalve Aulacomyella, exhibit a random stratigraphic distribution. Two-thirds of the individuals had a benthic mode of life attached to hard substrate. This seems to contradict the evidence of oxygen-free conditions on the sea floor, such as undisturbed lamination, presence of articulated skeletons, and preservation of soft parts. -

La recente scoperta di un piccolo campione, rivenuto nella Valle del Rio Seazza e in quella del Rio Rovadia, ha permesso un aggiornamento relativo ai crostacei decapodi delle Prealpi Carniche. Gli esemplari studiati sono stati assegnati a Acanthochirana triassica n. sp. (Aegeridae Burkenroad, 1963) e Antrimpos colettoi n. sp. (Penaeidae Rafinesque, 1815). Acanthochirana triassica n. sp. estende il range stratigrafico di questo genere nel Triassico superiore, mentre Antrimpos colettoi n. sp. rappresenta la seconda specie di questo genere segnalata nel Triassico superiore d’Italia. La scoperta di queste due nuove specie incrementa il numero delle specie di peneidi conosciuti nel Norico dell’alta Val Ta- gliamento (Prealpi Carniche settentrionali). Later, the same taxon was described as Macrourites arctiformis by von Schlotheim (1820). Subsequently, numerous authors, probably KEY WORDS unaware of Desmarest’s first paper, referred to this taxon as Eryon arctiformis (von Crustacea, Schlotheim, 1820). Following the Principle of Priority, the original name must be Decapoda, Eryonidae, used and Macrourites arctiformis von Schlotheim, 1820 is here considered to be a Eryon, more recent, subjective synonym. Moreover, two specimens of the type series of Lectotype, Eryon cuvieri Desmarest, 1817, from Faujas de Saint-Fond’s Cabinet of Natural Jurassic, Germany, History, have recently been traced in the Collection de Géologie of the Muséum Solnhofen. -

The site documents a fauna of Early Jurassic nektonic marine animals (five species of fishes, one species of marine crocodilian, two species of ichthyosaurs, cephalopods and crustaceans), but also over 20 spe- cies of insects. Unlike other fossil sites of similar age, the 3D preservation at Strawberry Bank provides unique evidence on palatal and braincase structures in the fishes and reptiles. The age of the site is important, documenting a marine ecosystem during recovery from the end-Triassic mass extinction, but also exactly coincident with the height of the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, a further time of turmoil in evolution.
