Archie McLean is best known as one of the “Big Four” sponsors of the inaugural Calgary Stampede in 1912. McLean worked as a range rider for the CY Ranch near Taber and eventually became ranch foreman and a managing partner. In 1909, McLean ran in the provincial election for the constituency of Lethbridge District. Despite not campaigning personally, he won with 56 percent of the vote. He soon joined the Liberal party and was re-elected in 1913 and 1917. He served in Cabinet as Provincial Secretary (1910-1917), Minister of Municipal Affairs (1911-1912), Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development (1914-1921) and Minister of Public Works (1917-1921). He is credited with starting Alberta’s early highway system. He was defeated in the 1921 election and began ranching in the Fort Macleod region. Archie McLean died on October 19, 1933. The lake has been locally and unofficially known as McLean Lake for many decades due to its location within the McLean School District No. 2900. The school district was named for Archie McLean, who was a prominent local leader and MLA at the time. The lake has also been known historically as “Jail Lake” due to its location on the grounds of the Provincial Jail (now the Lethbridge Correctional Centre). • Alberta Custom Rates Survey : Crop and Pastureland Lease and Rental 2016
Alberta Custom Rates Survey Crop and Pastureland Lease and Rental 2016 Economics and Competitiveness Branch INTRODUCTION This Custom Rate Survey was conducted by Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, Economics and Competitiveness Branch, Statistics and Data Development Section. The data presented in this report was obtained by contacting producers and custom operators and thus represent actual charges. Please note that some instances may be “good neighbor rates” as opposed to commercial rates. The reader should be aware that varying lease and rental arrangements in different areas of the province could significantly affect the rates charged from year to year. The intent of the survey is to provide producers with additional information to help with their farm management decisions. The quality of data is dependent on the cooperation received by producers as well as commercial custom operators. We would like to thank all the survey participants who willingly provided the information for this report. If you are aware of anyone who is a custom operator that has not been contacted, but wish to participate in the survey, please do not hesitate to refer them to me. The assistance of Reynold Jaipaul, Roy Larsen, Guangzhi Liu, Melodie Mynzak, Marian Elson and Pamela Triska of Alberta Agriculture and Forestry is greatly appreciated. • November 4, 2020 News Release Kneehill County Donates Fire Engines to Alberta Society for Firefighters Abroad at the October 27
November 4, 2020 News Release Kneehill County donates Fire Engines to Alberta Society for Firefighters Abroad At the October 27, 2020 Regular Council meeting, Kneehill County Council moved to donate fire engines E11 and K2 to the Alberta Society for Firefighters Abroad. The K2 is a 1986 Mack pumper that has been in storage as a spare unit, but no longer meets NFPA standards on pumping capabilities. Engine E11 is a 1999 GMC that has surpassed its NFPA front line life cycle. “With the recent purchase of new fire engines, these units are no longer needed by fire departments in the area.” said Kneehill County Reeve, Jerry Wittstock. “Council is happy to be donating these trucks to this worthwhile cause, and hopes the donation of these apparatus will assist those less fortunate with their fire safety and training.” The Alberta Society for Firefighters Abroad (ASFA) is an organization on a mission to build the capacity and safety of firefighters and emergency services abroad through apparatus, equipment and training projects. Based out of Lacombe, Alberta, the ASFA is a society made up of past and present emergency responders, community members and supporters. Their primary base of operations abroad is in Paraguay, where they have successfully made 7 significant donations to numerous fire departments. When a truck is donated through the organization, the ASFA sends enough equipment, PPE and supplies along with the donated truck so it can be in-service when it arrives. Shortly after the arrival of the truck and equipment, a small group travels down to Paraguay to train the receiving department on the use and maintenance of the apparatus and equipment.
