What different pictures the word FEAST paints in different languages! FIESTA - the Festival Procession of a Patron Saint. If we were of a Mediterranean or Latin-American nation we would be carrying round the village a statue of St Mary Magdalene surrounded by flowers, candles and acolytes, followed by an all-singing all dancing procession of the whole community. Or, FETE. That suggests, in our N. European tradition, the country garden party with strawberries and cream and extra special stalls, enjoyed rather more sedately by the better behaved members of the neighbourhood. But the same word in English, FEAST, has two meanings: a company or college or council dinner of five courses or more, complete with speeches; or, the VILLAGE FEAST. Before coming to E. Anglia I had not met this last meaning of FEAST: but there it was, large as life and twice as natural, at Waterbeach (we were at Waterbeach and Landbeach before Good Shepherd, Cambridge before Hilton and Fenstanton) and now here it is at Hilton - the whole village coming together for every kind of enjoyment - including not a little eating and drinking. What have these Festivals in common? Above all, that we all get together to accept each other, appreciate each other, and enjoy each other's company in all our amazing variety. God bless us in our Feast this year, and for many years to come. .

We are part of a network of 38 Rural Community Councils across England and are a member of ACRE (the national umbrella for RCCs). We are proud to support local communities in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and nearby where appropriate. We put a lot of effort into getting to know our customers so we can understand what they need from us. This ensures we focus on providing products and services that really make a difference to local people as they work in their own communities. As part of our work we provide a Neighbourhood Planning service for local communities. We have developed this service by building on our skills, knowledge and competencies gained in other project areas such as rural affordable housing and community-led planning and by working with local planning consultants to broaden our capacity. The fieldwork comprised two 5m x 10m trenches, which were targeted to expose the northern extent of the proposed Roman Villa and southern extent of a potential bathhouse. Excavations revealed additional evidence of Roman occupation, indications of small industry and high-status artefacts. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The project was funded by the Ouse Washes Landscape Partnership Project via the Heritage Lottery Fund, for which particular thanks are conveyed to Mark Nokkert of Cambridge Acre. Permission to excavate on the land was provided by the land owner, the RSPB, which was principally overseen by Robin Standring, and the tenant farmer, Chris Wissen. The volunteering was coordinated by Rachael Brown of Cambridgeshire Acre with Grahame Appleby of the CAU. Dr Keith Haylock, University of Aberystwyth undertook the pXRF measurements. Figure 3’s photographs were produced by Emma Harper. Christopher Evans (CAU) was the Project Manager and work on site was completed by volunteers supervised by Jonathan Tabor, Leanne Robinson Zeki and Francesca Mazzilli of the CAU.

  • Dear Sir's Fenstanton Is a Village of Approximately 3,000 Parishioners
From: [mailto ] Sent: 15 June 2015 09:24 To: A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon; Steve Dartford Subject: Fenstanton A14 Written Representation to The Planning Inspectorate Dear Sir’s Fenstanton is a village of approximately 3,000 parishioners who reside in approximately 1300 homes within the Parish. We are a substantial community that wishes to exercise its right to make Written Representation regarding the construction of the new A14. When the existing A14 was constructed in the late 1960’s it disected the Fenstanton community and residents on the south side of the village are required to use an underpass to gain walking access the village high street. Over the following years the village has been subjected to a significant deterioration in the level visual pollution, noise pollution and air pollution as the volume of A14 traffic has increased beyond all initial expectations. With the construction of the new A14, many of our residents will be sandwiched between the old and new roads which will converge a short distance East of the village. Residents on Hilton Road, The Gables and Pear Tree Close will be mostly affected by poor air quality and noise pollution accumulating from both directions. When there is a traffic incident on the existing A14 the village high street experiences significant increases in traffic through the village centre which already suffers from unacceptable levels of traffic negotiating parked vehicles. During peak travel times and/or when there is a traffic incident on the existing A14 the village centre and Low Road become blocked by traffic diverting off the A14 through the village and using Low Road as a rat run to and from St Ives to circumvent the traffic problems being experienced on the existing A14.
