According to the Dec. 12 issue of Mexican daily EXCELSIOR, Contadora Group foreign ministers have decided to establish a Latin American political organization with the aim of taking "rapid and flexible" action on "any" regional political problem. The establishment of such an organization will be a major topic at the Dec. 17-18 meeting of Contadora and Support Group foreign ministers in Rio de Janeiro, . Creation of an "alternative" to the Organization of American States (OAS) has been suggested by many Latin American leaders, but has received special attention by Peruvian President Alan Garcia. Garcia has stated that Latin American nations require a political forum of their own, excluding the . Diplomatic sources told EXCELSIOR the proposed regional forum would seek to achieve Latin American political integration in the medium term, and would resemble in structure existing organizations created for the promotion of economic integration, such as the Latin American Economic System (SELA), among others.
