Established in 1790 to serve as the US capital, Washington, DC has always been the product of domestic and international influences. Its site along the Potomac River was chosen to win Thomas Jefferson’s approval of Alexander Hamilton’s plan for a national bank that would assume the Revolutionary War debt of the states. The city plan was designed by a Frenchman, Pierre L’Enfant. The Mall has been the site of many historic events, and the Smithsonian houses treasures of every aspect of American life over the centuries. By attending one of the many evening social events that will take place in museums and other notable buildings, we hope that you will experience a sampling of the history and culture of this remarkable city. Never before has an IBA Annual Conference had so many distinguished speakers from the highest levels of government and international institutions. We are very fortunate to have three current US Cabinet officers – Attorney General Loretta E Lynch, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and US Trade Representative Michael Froman – address us in special Morning Keynote speeches that I hope everyone will attend. We are honoured that the keynote speaker for our Opening Ceremony is Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF); as the world economy struggles with Brexit, election uncertainties and resistance to trade deals, her speech will be timely and informative. Other notable speakers include Justice Anthony Kennedy, senior Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court; General Colin L Powell, USA (ret.), former United States Secretary of State; Mary Jo White, Chair of the US Securities and Exchange Commission; Ben Bernanke, immediate past Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System (Fed); Robert S Mueller, III, former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); and Arlene Foster, First Minister of Northern Ireland. The programme will feature more than 200 substantive legal sessions, workshops and panels, including topics on current events and contentious issues facing the profession. The committee sessions will offer the chance to hear from the best experts in the field and will benefit all delegates, whatever your area of practice. As usual, the LPD, SPPI and IBAHRI will present outstanding Showcase sessions.     March 8, 2016 President Barack Obama The White House Washington, DC 20502 Dear Mr. President: At the most recent meeting of the President’s Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking (“PITF”) in early January, we were pleased to see the progress reported by those departments and agencies across the federal government with responsibility for coordinating efforts to combat trafficking in persons. In particular, we applaud that the PITF marked the first convening of the U.S. Advisory Council on Human Trafficking. At the close of the meeting, Ms. Tina Tchen, Executive Director of the White House’s Council on Women and Girls, challenged those in attendance to feel the “fierce urgency of the remaining 12 months” to cement the President’s legacy by making “as broad and as deep a commitment” as necessary to combat trafficking in persons. Like Ms. Tchen, ATEST and the Freedom Network believe the Administration is poised to realize important gains against human trafficking in the U.S. and overseas. We request that you consider the following key priorities during the final year of the Administration, which are further described in the attached document. 1. Implement Nationwide In-Person Registration Program for Domestic Workers: In October of 2015 the Department of State launched a pilot program to conduct in- person registration of A-3 domestic workers in Washington, DC. We are pleased that the pilot program, also outlined in the Federal Strategic Action Plan on Services for Victims of Human Trafficking in the United States, is now underway and ask that full nationwide implementation of the program be completed within the year.

    The international journal of gacommercial and treaty arbitratiron NEWS Advocacy workshop comes to the UK Tom Toulson Friday, 04 June 2010 The Foundation for International Arbitration Advocacy is running a workshop outside its base in Switzerland for the first time. The workshop on the questioning of expert witnesses will take place over the first three days in July at Beaumont House. Twenty-four participants will get the chance to cross-examine experts from FTI Consulting and Ernst & Young - and will receive feedback on live and video-recorded performances. The sessions will be run by experienced arbitration specialists, who will also give demonstrations and lectures. The FIAA was established in 2007 to provide training to lawyers from different jurisdictions in the art of advocacy tailored to arbitration. According to one of the founders, David Roney, The international journal of a partner at Schellenbergg Wittmeracomme rincial Geneva,and treaty arbitrati rtheon decision to bring the workshops outside Switzerland is part of an international strategy. “By taking our workshop to other major arbitration centres and developing markets, we aim to make them accessible to a broader audience by reducing travel costs. We chose Beaumont House in Windsor because it offers first-rate residential conference facilities and is within easy access of both central London and Heathrow.” The organisation plans to run its next workshop in São Paulo in the autumn of 2010. Based on those who have registered for the July event already, Roney expects half the participants will be from the UK and half from countries in Europe and North America. The course costs £985, which also covers accommodation and meals.
