Just as the World's Fair encouraged the exchange of cutting edge ideas, so, too, we plan to fire your creative spark with engaging sessions, fascinating speakers, and one fantastic party in the iconic Sunsphere. Our theme's play on that of the 1982 World's Fair invites you to consider the ways in which our profession provides enormous opportunity for positive influence and change.

In addition to innovation, the 1982 World's Fair was notable for its gathering of world cultures. In 2016, we attempt to foster another multicultural experience, beginning with plenary speaker, Appalachian author Silas House, and ending with luncheon speaker, Arthur Golden, and his discussion of the world of the .

Call for Proposals

“Intentional Teaching Turns the World” TYCA-SE 2016

On May 1st, 1982, over 100,000 people attended the first day of the World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. Then President Ronald Reagan welcomed the crowds on opening day, and during the next 6 months, over 11 million people made the journey to Knoxville to visit the exhibits, including the iconic Knoxville Sunsphere building, centered on the Fair’s theme of “Energy Turns the World.” We are excited to announce that the 1982 World’s Fair serves as the inspiration for the 2016 meeting of the Two-Year College English Association-Southeast (TYCA-SE) in Knoxville, Tennessee, which will focus on the theme “Intentional Teaching Turns the World.” As the organizers of the 1982 event told the world, “You’ve Got To Be There.”

The 2016 TYCA-SE conference will accept proposals that address the teaching of English in the two-year college or that center around teaching the first two years of English at a four-year institution. More specifically, we seek proposals that consider the idea of intentional teaching. Why do we choose to teach in the ways that we do? In what ways can our teaching decisions change and influence the lives of our students? Which moments in your teaching career have most impacted your students? Was it the time you integrated service-learning into your course? That semester you taught your composition course in a city abroad? Was it the assignment you created that had a focus on social media and argumentation? Bring these moments to TYCA-SE 2016.

Much like the World’s Fair showcased its exhibitors’ best and brightest innovations, we hope to showcase the strongest in intentional teaching from around the southeast region. We encourage presentations with a foundation in pedagogical theory, but which focus on practical techniques for some of the following situations: • using cutting-edge technology in the classroom, • fostering lively classroom discussions, • considering real-world applications inside and outside of the classroom, • reimagining tired assignments, • leading course redesign, • introducing new texts, • incorporating writing tutors into the classroom, • working with ESL students, • teaching online, • creating classroom community, etc.

We hope that this conference will energize and motivate the southeast region’s two-year college English teachers to turn the worlds of their students in ways that are intentional, innovative, and inspirational.

Pre-Conference Opportunities

Teaching Reading and Writing in an Age of Acceleration ($25) Teachers of developmental reading and composition courses now live in an age of acceleration in which redesign efforts often focus on moving students quickly through remediation. Frequently, students seek

TYCA-SE 2016 February 24-27, 2016 Knoxville, Tennessee

shortcuts, skim reading materials, and discount the writing process. Our challenge is to maintain course rigor and standards in this environment. By highlighting research about motivation, critical thinking, and writing pedagogy, we’ll discuss how to impart in-depth analytical and critical thinking skills in accelerated courses. During our workshop, attendees will share their experiences and strategies. We’ll also provide some usable methods and strategies to slow down and challenge students to do the thinking and writing they need to be successful in our courses and their careers. Visit the Highlander, the Cradle of the Civil Rights Movement ($25) Founded in 1932, the Highlander Center’s commitment to ending segregation made it a critically important incubator of the Civil Rights movement. Sessions at the Highlander Folk School, as it was then known, helped lay the foundations for historic acts such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, providing training for movement leaders, among them Rosa Parks, Ralph Abernathy, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Today, Highlander continues to fight for justice and equality. Our TYCA-SE excursion will visit their New Market, Tennessee, research and education center, re-introducing visitors to the vital role Highlander played in the Civil Rights movement, as well as to their ongoing mission to support social justice efforts in Appalachia and across America. Walking Tour of Literary Knoxville ($25)

Home to James Agee, Nikki Giovanni, Cormac McCarthy and others, Knoxville’s fascinating literary heritage comes to life in a walking tour of the historic downtown.
