  • Draft Letter to the Prime Minister
HOUSE OF COMMONS LONDO sw 1A OAA Rt. Hon. David Cameron MP Prime Minister 10 Downing Street London SW1A2AA Dear Prime Minister, As Members of Parliament for Staffordshire, we write to express our deep concern at the withdrawal of 3rd Battalion, the Mercian Regiment (The Staffards) from the Order of Battle. The Battalion has a proud history which can be traced back to its first raising at the King's Head Inn, Lichfield, in 1705. It served in Martinique, South Africa, Flanders, Gallipoli, Anzio and Arnhem. More recently, photographs of 3 Mercian fighting in Basra, became defining images of the Iraq campaign. We all recognise the difficult financial climate and the constraints that imposes on the Ministry of Defence. We understand that savings must be made. However, we also know that the decision to withdraw 3 Mercian will be distressing for all those currently serving, particularly those that might face redundancy, for their families and for those former Staffards who proudly recall their service. We know that it is the responsibility of the Mercian Regiment, as reorganised, to decide how best to reflect its history and antecedents. But as there is no longer any senior former Stafford serving on its staff, we hope that you will do all you can to encourage the Regiment to preserve and cherish the symbols, traditions and heritage of 3 Mercian within its ranks. 2 Mercian is known now as the Worcester and Sherwood Foresters as a result of previous amalgamations and we hope that a similar formula can be found to remember the Staffords.

HOUSE OF COMMONS Exiting the European Union Committee Oral evidence: The progress of the UK’s negotiations on EU withdrawal, HC 372 Monday 3 September 2018, Brussels Ordered by the House of Commons to be published on 4 September 2018. Members present: Hilary Benn (Chair); Sir Christopher Chope; Stephen Crabb; Richard Graham; Peter Grant; Andrea Jenkyns; Stephen Kinnock; Jeremy Lefroy; Mr Pat McFadden; Seema Malhotra; Mr Jacob Rees-Mogg; Emma Reynolds; Stephen Timms; Mr John Whittingdale. Questions 2537 - 2563 Witnesses I: Michel Barnier, Chief Negotiator, European Commission, and Sabine Weyand, Deputy Chief Negotiator, European Commission. Examination of witnesses Witnesses: Michel Barnier and Sabine Weyand. Michel Barnier: Welcome once again. You are always welcome. Q2537 Chair: Michel, can I reciprocate on behalf of the Committee? It is very good to see you again. Can I begin by apologising that we had to let you down on the previous date when we were due to meet? We had certain important votes in Parliament that necessitated our attendance. Secondly, can I thank you very much for honouring the commitment you made to us the first time we met, that you would give evidence to the Committee on the record? Because as you are aware, today’s session is being recorded and will be published as an evidence session, so it is a slightly different format from our previous discussions. I understand entirely that you will want to check the English translation of what you said before the minutes are published and we realise that will take— Michel Barnier: Just to check that nothing is lost in translation.

  • Surgery Reconfiguration Public Engagement Report
Surgery Reconfiguration Public Engagement Report PB March 2015 Executive Summary After an extended period of public engagement, over 18 weeks from 16thOctober 2014 to 9th February 2015, the feedback has been collated in this report. Overall, there appears to be an acceptance that the Trust cannot continue to provide surgical services in the current form given the external factors influencing healthcare delivery and the evidence that centralisation of services improves clinical outcomes. It is clear that the population is passionate about the retention of their local hospitals and the proposal to keep all outpatient appointments and investigation services delivered locally is popular. Concern remains over transport and travel and whilst the Trust is exploring possible solutions to this there is a degree of public scepticism that the issues will be resolved satisfactorily, which is likely to remain until such time as concrete plans have been developed and implemented. There has been almost no feedback from patients or the public relating to how the changes will affect the likely outcomes of undergoing surgery. This was explained at events with provision of the evidence on the website and so the lack of feedback may indicate it is not a contentious issue. There is little difference between the feedback received from each site although there has been a better response from Good Hope in terms of numbers, possibly due to the additional awareness created by local lobby groups. Whilst there appears to be acknowledgement that redesigning surgical services is the right approach, it is likely that individuals will resist change when it directly affects them or the services they access.

  • Bournemouth Playground Strategy 2009-14 (Updated January 2011) 1
Bournemouth Playground Strategy 2009-14 (updated January 2011) 1. Introduction Bournemouth has approximately 164,000 residents, it forms part of the second largest conurbation in the South West and is predicted to grow further. The majority of children live in the north of the borough (see fig. 1). Figure 1: Density of population of children and young people across Bournemouth 2001 At the end of 2008 Bournemouth Borough Council owned and maintained a total of sixty-two playgrounds within public open space, a further three playgrounds were available for public use across the Borough owned by third sector organisations or the private sector. The quality, size and popularity of public play areas varies considerably, from small sparsely equipped sites such as Chesildene Drive in Muscliff, through to large destination play sites such as Redhill Park – which has a large equipped play area, paddling pool, café and toilets. Chesildene Drive – an unequipped play area The cost of installing and maintaining public playgrounds has risen significantly over the last 20 years for a number of reasons, including costs of raw materials, increased safety and fencing recommendations. All children’s play areas in Bournemouth are currently gated or fenced and designated as dog free areas under local byelaws. Since 2003 a programme of ensuring all equipment is surrounded by safety surfacing where appropriate to comply with current British Standard BSEN 1176. The state of public play areas has gained significant national attention over the past two years both politically and within the media. The creation of the national body Play England has resulted in the generation of a great deal of research into children’s play, looking at best practice examples both within and outside the UK.

Migrant Voters in the 2015 General Election 1. Introduction The 2015 general election looks to be the closest and least predictable in living memory, and immigration is a key issue at the heart of the contest. With concerns about the economy slowly receding as the financial crisis fades into memory, immigration has returned to the top of the political agenda, named by more voters as their most pressing political concern than any other issue1. Widespread anxiety about immigration has also been a key driver behind the surge in support for UKIP, though it is far from the only issue this new party is mobilizing around2. Much attention has been paid to the voters most anxious about immigration, and what can be done to assuage their concerns. Yet amidst this fierce debate about whether, and how, to restrict immigration, an important electoral voice has been largely overlooked: that of migrants themselves. In this briefing, we argue that the migrant The political benefits of engaging with electorate is a crucial constituency in the 2015 migrant voters could be felt far into the election, and will only grow in importance in future.

I commissioned this Review in July 2010 in the wake of celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the Cadet Forces. I wanted to ensure that we were making the most of not just the Cadet Forces but the many other youth engagement activities that the MOD, including the Armed Forces, undertake. I believe that not enough is done to promote the work that we do in this area. For too long we have been keeping Defence’s Youth Engagement activities to ourselves.
