1 PLAYLIST JAN. 29th 2017 9AM The Beatles - Octopus’s Garden - Abbey Road (Starkey) Lead vocal: Ringo “Octopus’s Garden” is Ringo Starr’s second solo composition in the Beatles catalog, credited to his real name, Richard Starkey. He got the idea for the song after he abruptly “quit” the group for one week during the making of the “White Album, in August 1968. He traveled to Sardinia on the Mediterranean and spent time on actor Peter Seller’s yacht. On board, Ringo was told that octopus go around the ocean bed and pick up stones and shiny objects and build gardens in front of their caves. The still unfinished song was played for George on January 26, 1969. This segment was shown in the “Let It Be” film. A proper rerecording of the song took place on April 26. The group went through 32 takes with Ringo on drums and guide vocal, George on his Stratocaster through a Leslie speaker, John on Epiphone casino electric guitar and Paul on Rickenbacker bass guitar. Overdubs were recorded on July 17 and 18 with Ringo’s lead vocal with ADT (artificial double tracking), Paul adding piano and more drums, and backing vocals from Paul, George and Ringo. During the instrumental break Ringo can 2 be heard blowing through a straw into a glass of water for bubbling sounds. The Beatles - Good Morning Good Morning - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Based on a Kellogg’s Cornflakes television commercial John heard while sitting at the piano and feeling a bit “stuck” trying to write something for “Sgt. Pepper.” Paul plays a stinging guitar solo and flourishes with his right-handed Fender Esquire. The basic rhythm track was recorded on February 8, 1967 in eight takes, four of them complete. Overdubs followed with John’s lead vocal and Paul’s bass added on February 16. A horn section consisting of members of the Brian Epstein-managed band Sounds Inc. (previously Sounds Incorporated) was brought in on March 13. Sounds Incorporated had been one of the opening acts on the Beatles’ 1964 and 1965 tours. The Beatles - Good Day Sunshine - Revolver (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul One of the fastest recorded tracks during the sessions for the “Revolver” album. The song, written primarily by Paul with assistance from John, was originally known as “A Good Day’s Sunshine,” and was recorded on June 8 and 9, 1966. McCartney said the song “was very much a nod” to the Lovin’ Spoonful’s 1966 hit “Daydream.” On U.S. album: Revolver - Capitol LP 3 The Beatles - Here Comes The Sun - Abbey Road (Harrison) Lead vocal: George The second of two CLASSIC songs George Harrison delivered for the “Abbey Road” album. “Here Comes The Sun” and “Something” was a phenomenal one-two punch that had to have Lennon and McCartney wondering what else Harrison had up his sleeve. George wrote the song while walking around the sunny back garden of Eric Clapton’s home, strumming o0ne of Eric’s acoustic guitars. Harrison had skipped out of one of the many Apple business meetings that day. Recording in 13 takes on July 7, 1969, Ringo’s 29th birthday, with George on his Gibson J-200 acoustic guitar, Paul on his Rickenbacker bass guitar and Ringo on drums. John was sidelined for the week due to be hospitalized following a car accident in Scotland. Recorded in three takes on June 2, 1964. In his 1980 interview with Playboy magazine John Lennon remembered this being one of Paul’s better songs. McCartney double tracked his vocals. John Lennon's piano part was meant to be omitted from the final mix, but lack of separation between instruments meant that its sound leaked into other microphones during recording. As a result it can be heard on the released version. The b-side of the UK “A Hard Day’s Night” single. On U.S. album: Something New - Capitol LP The Beatles - You’re Going To Lose That Girl - Help! (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Often called “You’re Gonna Lose That Girl” by fans. Recorded in two takes on February 19, 1965. Written by John and Paul at Kenwood, John’s home on the St. George’s Hill estate in Weybridge, Surrey (where the Beatles would be photographed for the cover of their “Rubber Soul” album). Overdubs included Paul on piano and Ringo on bongos. On U.S. albums: Help! - Capitol LP 7 The Beatles - Your Mother Should Know - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul Paul wrote “Your Mother Should Know” on harmonium at his Cavendish Avenue home in London. Recorded on August 22 and 23, 1967 at Chappell Recording Studios in London, those dates would be the only time the Beatles recorded at that facility. Eight takes were recorded the first evening. The second night of recording was significant in that it marked the last time the Beatles saw Brian Epstein, who died four days later, aged just 32. Written entirely by Paul, in similar vein to “When I’m Sixty-Four.” Although the song was later re-made at Abbey Road at McCartney’s request, it was the Chappell version, with overdubs recorded in September at Abbey Road, that made it onto the “Magical Mystery Tour” EP. On U.S. album: Magical Mystery Tour - Capitol LP John Lennon – Woman - Double Fantasy ‘80 John considered this to be his “Beatle Track” on the album, and seemed a bit ashamed by it. But he had nothing to fear, as this is another truly great Lennon tune. With a superb vocal, gorgeous melody and a non-cloying, truly affective sentiment to the song. BREAK 8 The Beatles – Boys – Please Please Me (Dixon-Farrell) Lead vocal: Ringo Recorded in just one take on February 11, 1963. “Boys” was drummer Ringo Starr’s first recorded lead vocal. Luther Dixon and Wes Farrell’s song was originally recorded by The Shirelles and was the b-side to their smash hit “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” This song was usually Ringo’s contribution at The Beatles’ live performances during their North American Tour in the summer of 1964. McCartney 1.00 11 The Beatles - Doctor Robert - Revolver (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John John’s song about a doctor that dispenses pills and other comfort to his clients was rumored to be about Dr. Robert Freymann of New York, who ran a discreet clinic on Manhattan's East 78th Street. The good doctor had a reputation for giving vitamin B-12 injections containing large doses of amphetamines, mainly to well-heeled New Yorkers.

John Lennon – Steel and Glass - Walls And Bridges ‘74 Much like “How Do You Sleep” three years earlier, this is another blistering Lennon track that sets its sights on Allen Klein (who had contributed lyrics to “How Do You Sleep” those few years before). The Beatles - Revolution 1 - The Beatles 2 The first song recorded during the sessions for the “White Album.” At the time of its recording, this slower version was the only version of John Lennon’s “Revolution,” and it carried that titled without a “1” or a “9” in the title. Recording began on May 30, 1968, and 18 takes were recorded. On the final take, the first with a lead vocal, the song continued past the 4 1/2 minute mark and went onto an extended jam. It would end at 10:17 with John shouting to the others and to the control room “OK, I’ve had enough!” The final six minutes were pure chaos with discordant instrumental jamming, plenty of feedback, percussive clicks (which are heard in the song’s introduction as well), and John repeatedly screaming “alright” and moaning along with his girlfriend, Yoko Ono. Ono also spoke random streams of consciousness on the track such as “if you become naked.” This bizarre six-minute section was clipped off the version of what would become “Revolution 1” to form the basis of “Revolution 9.” Yoko’s “naked” line appears in the released version of “Revolution 9” at 7:53.

LVIII, NO. 3 JUNE 2003 Good Day Sunshine: Stock Returns and theWeather DAVID HIRSHLEIFER and TYLER SHUMWAY n ABSTRACT Psychological evidence and casual intuition predict that sunny weather is as- sociated with upbeat mood. This paper examines the relationship between morning sunshine in the city of a country’s leading stock exchange and daily market index returns across 26 countries from 1982 to 1997. Sunshine is strongly signi¢cantly correlated with stock returns. After controlling for sun- shine, rain and snow are unrelated to returns. Substantial use of weather- based strategies was optimal for a trader with very low transactions costs. However, because these strategies involve frequent trades, fairly modest costs eliminate the gains.These ¢ndings are di⁄cult to reconcile with fully rational price setting. SUNSHINE AFFECTS MOOD, as evidenced by song and verse, daily experience, and formal psychological studies. But does sunlight a¡ect the stock market? The traditional e⁄cient markets view says no, with minor quali¢cations. If sun- light a¡ects the weather, it can a¡ect agricultural and perhaps other weather- related ¢rms. But in modern economies in which agriculture plays a modest role, it seems unlikely that whether it is cloudy outside the stock exchange today should a¡ect the rational price of the nation’s stock market index. (Even in coun- tries where agriculture plays a large role, it is not clear that one day of sunshine versus cloud cover at the stock exchange should be very informative about har- vest yield.) An alternative view is that sunlight a¡ects mood, and that people tend to eval- uate future prospects more optimistically when they are in a good mood than when they are in a bad mood.

The band will supply: - two guitars and guitar amplifiers (combo amps) - bass guitar - all necessary instrument effect pedals, patch cables, etc. - digital piano if needed - Hammond organ with Leslie speaker cabinet - all necessary amp stands, keyboard stands, stools, etc. - helping hands, under the direction of the stage manager This band can do a festival-speed changeover, even when using the Hammond, provided we have good communication with the tech crew and a space very close to the stage in which to prepare our load-in.

    Volume 11, Number 4, October 2005 Copyright © 2005 Society for Music Theory Mark Spicer Received October 2005 [1] As I thought about how best to begin this review, an article by David Fricke in the latest issue of Rolling Stone caught my attention.(1) Entitled “Beatles Maniacs,” the article tells the tale of the Fab Faux, a New York-based Beatles tribute group— founded in 1998 by Will Lee (longtime bassist for Paul Schaffer’s CBS Orchestra on the Late Show With David Letterman)—that has quickly risen to become “the most-accomplished band in the Beatles-cover business.” By painstakingly learning their respective parts note-by-note from the original studio recordings, the Fab Faux to date have mastered and performed live “160 of the 211 songs in the official canon.”(2) Lee likens his group’s approach to performing the Beatles to “the way classical musicians start a chamber orchestra to play Mozart . as perfectly as we can.” As the Faux’s drummer Rich Pagano puts it, “[t]his is the greatest music ever written, and we’re such freaks for it.” [2] It’s been over thirty-five years since the real Fab Four called it quits, and the group is now down to two surviving members, yet somehow the Beatles remain as popular as ever. Hardly a month goes by, it seems, without something new and Beatle-related appearing in the mass media to remind us of just how important this group has been, and continues to be, in shaping our postmodern world. For example, as I write this, the current issue of TV Guide (August 14–20, 2005) is a “special tribute” issue commemorating the fortieth anniversary of the Beatles’ sold-out performance at New York’s Shea Stadium on August 15, 1965—a concert which, as the magazine notes, marked the “dawning of a new era for rock music” where “[v]ast outdoor shows would become the superstar standard.”(3) The cover of my copy—one of four covers for this week’s issue, each featuring a different Beatle—boasts a photograph of Paul McCartney onstage at the Shea concert, his famous Höfner “violin” bass gripped in one hand as he waves to the crowd with the other.
