We hope you like the changes to the look and feel of the newsletter and the OBA s website. In addition to the enhancements to the Thomiana and the OBA s website, we have also completed a few events since the AGM and have plans for lots more. The Taradale (Bendigo) Cricket Match in April was a great success as was the Seniors Lunch in May. Coming up in August, we have the Transfiguration Service and the Annual Dinner Dance ("big dance ). Shortly afterwards, we have the OBA Members Night in September followed by the Golf Tournament and Thomian Nite ("small dance") in November. An eventful year is wrapped up in December with the much anticipated Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. Our event calendar reflects the diverse tastes of our membership and your participation will ensure success. Costs prevent us from publishing the THOMIANA more frequently but we do stay in touch via email and our revised user-friendly website will give you all the updated information at your fingertips. We also try to stay in touch via phone with our members and I urge you to contact Trevor Meares (0402338637), our untiring membership secretary who will ensure that your contact details are updated. One more year passed, and a new beginning is here, so let us welcome the coming year with love, joy, and peace. The New Year is the time when we all are excited about the new opportunities which are going to knock at our doorstep. It is time to forget all the past bad memories and move forward with a positive outlook. Everyone has been very quick to wish 2020 away but, as we reflect on the year that was, we should realise how many lessons we have learnt and how much we must be grateful for. Many of us entered the world of lockdown and were forced into entirely new psychological and social situations. These changes created stronger bonds with our families while looking after each other in the confined space of our own homes. Many of our members resorted to online programs like Zoom to keep our lifelong friendships alive and maintain the camaraderie built up over the years. Due to COVID restrictions, all our key events were cancelled or postponed. During this period, RCOBAA committee decided to assist student Royalists in need of urgent help due to loss of employment and income. A sub-committee was formed to assist the students by purchasing and delivering dry rations. A few of the members from our community and from our membership came forward to assist with generous donations, free legal, accounting, and medical help.

A city marred by bomb blasts, terror- ist activities and political turmoil, the commercial capital of Colombo will be in focus today for good reasons, with the regions’ biggest sporting event getting underway there. A total number of 2075 athletes from eight countries will vie for supremacy in this mega regional sporting event which was inaugurated in 1984 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A colourful cultural show will be the highlight of the opening cere- mony. The SAG will go on till August 28. The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 4.00 p.m. today. Due to the tight schedule, football and badminton began last Monday (14) and Wednesday (16) respectively, days before the official launch. According to the organisers, Sri Lanka will be fielding the most number of competitors (462), this time. India will be sending 429, Pakistan (375), Nepal (277), Bangladesh (240), Afghanistan (123), Maldives (98) and Bhutan (71). India won the SAG (formerly known as the South Asian Federation Games), comprehensively on nine occasions, but Sri Lanka clinched the coveted athletics championships in 1991 in Colombo, the last time the games were held here, tak- ing 15 golds, ahead of India’s 10.
