Uefa Europa League UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - 2013/14 SEASON MATCH PRESS KITS (First leg: 1-0) Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica - Lisbon Thursday 10 April 2014 SL Benfica 21.05CET (20.05 local time) AZ Alkmaar Quarter-finals, Second leg Last updated 07/04/2014 11:20CET Match background 2 Legend 4 1 SL Benfica - AZ Alkmaar Thursday 10 April 2014 - 21.05CET (20.05 local time) Match press kit Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Lisbon Match background SL Benfica reached last season's UEFA Europa League final and may fancy their chances of getting to Turin this time around as they defend a 1-0 quarter-final lead at home against AZ Alkmaar. • Eduardo Salvio's excellent finish into an empty net early in the second half earned Benfica victory in the Netherlands, with AZ fading after having had the better chances before the break. Previous meetings • The sides met for the first time in UEFA competition in the first leg. • Benfica's record in 22 meetings with Dutch clubs is W9 D8 L5 (W7 D1 L2 in Lisbon). Those overall fixtures include two matches on neutral territory – a 0-0 draw against PSV Eindhoven in the 1988 European Champion Clubs' Cup final (Benfica lost 6-5 on penalties) and a 3-0 defeat by AFC Ajax in a 1968/69 European Cup quarter-final replay. • Benfica have won their last five games at home against Dutch opponents, with all three victories this century by margins of two goals or more. • AZ's six games against Portuguese opponents have ended W3 D1 L2 (W1 D0 L1 in Portugal). Match background • Benfica are unbeaten in 11 European home games (W9 D2) since a 2-0 loss to FC Barcelona in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League group stage. • AZ are unbeaten in six away games in Europe this season (W3 D3), but have averaged only one goal a game on the road since the start of the group stage. Prior to the first leg, AZ were the only quarter-finalists who had made it through the group stage who remained unbeaten in this season's competition. • All the four surviving teams that crossed over from the UEFA Champions League round of 32 – Juventus, Benfica, FC Basel 1893 and FC Porto – are yet to lose in their five games. • Benfica eliminated Newcastle United FC at this stage last season en route to a UEFA Europa League final defeat against Chelsea. They are in the quarter-finals of this competition for the fourth time in five seasons; they got no further in 2009/10, but reached the semi-finals in 2010/11 and the final in 2012/13. • AZ last reached the quarter-finals in 2011/12, bowing out to Valencia CF, having also come unstuck at the same stage – against SV Werder Bremen – in 2006/07. They last made it to the semi-finals in 2004/05, losing to Sporting Clube de Portugal, and were beaten by Ipswich Town FC in the 1980/81 UEFA Cup final. Team facts • Benfica have loaned their Dutch striker Ola John to Hamburger SV for the remainder of the season, but have two other players with Eredivisie experience: midfielders Miralem Sulejmani (sc Heerenveen 2007–08, Ajax 2008–13) and Filip Djuričić (Heerenveen 2010–13). • AZ defender Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and midfielder Viktor Elm played alongside Djuričić at Heerenveen (2010–13), while AZ midfielder Roy Beerens was a team-mate of both at the same club (2007–11). • Along with Basel and Olympique Lyonnais, AZ are one of three sides in the quarter-finals yet to win a major UEFA trophy. • AZ have conceded the most fouls in this season's competiton – 166 since the start of the group stage. • AZ's Serbian midfielder Nemanja Gudelj has played in more minutes of this season's competition since the start of the group stage (980) than any other player. He has also committed the most fouls of any player left in the tournament (25). • Salvio has made a record 38 UEFA Europa League appearances since the competition took on its current format; his goal in the first leg allowed Benfica to join PSV Eindhoven on 64 goals as the highest scoring clubs in the new competition. • The competition's two most successful member associations this season, Spain and Portugal, boast two surviving clubs apiece, with Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland and France taking one team through. Coach information • Benfica coach Jorge Jesus followed in the footsteps of his father Jesus Virgolino by signing for Sporting as a youngster and was a journeyman midfielder before moving into coaching. He took charge of a number of Portuguese clubs and was given the Benfica job in June 2009 after leading SC Braga to the last 16 of the 2008/09 UEFA Cup. He guided the Eagles to the title in his first campaign and to the final of last season's UEFA Europa League. • Dick Advocaat was named AZ coach on 16 October, returning to the club where he spent five months in charge at 2 SL Benfica - AZ Alkmaar Thursday 10 April 2014 - 21.05CET (20.05 local time) Match press kit Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Lisbon the end of 2009/10. Twice Netherlands coach, he won the 2007/08 UEFA Cup with FC Zenit, as well as league titles with PSV Eindhoven (1997/98), Rangers FC (1998/99, 1999/2000) and Zenit (2007). • Advocaat is the only man in the quarter-finals who has won this competition as a coach, though Juventus boss Antonio Conte lifted the UEFA Cup as a player. • Advocaat's last professional engagement in Lisbon was the semi-final of UEFA EURO 2004, which his Netherlands side lost 2-1 to hosts Portugal at the Estádio José Alvalade. Shoot-out record • Benfica's record in UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W1 L1: 4-1 (home) v PAOK, 1999/2000 UEFA Cup second round 5-6 (neutral) v PSV Eindhoven, 1987/88 European Champion Clubs' Cup final • AZ's only UEFA penalty shoot-out ended in a 5-4 loss to FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou in the 1977/78 UEFA Cup second round. 3 SL Benfica - AZ Alkmaar Thursday 10 April 2014 - 21.05CET (20.05 local time) Match press kit Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Lisbon Legend Competitions Club competitions National team competitions UCL: UEFA Champions League EURO: UEFA European Football Championship ECCC: European Champion Clubs' Cup WC: FIFA World Cup UEL: UEFA Europa League CONFCUP: FIFA Confederations Cup UCUP: UEFA Cup FRIE: Friendly internationals UCWC: UEFA Cup Winners' Cup U21FRIE: Under-21 friendly internationals SCUP: UEFA Super Cup U21: UEFA European Under-21 Championship UIC: UEFA Intertoto Cup U17: UEFA Under-17 Championship ICF: Inter-Cities Fairs Cup U16: UEFA European Under-16 Championship U19: UEFA Under-19 Championship U18: UEFA European Under-18 Championship WWC: FIFA Women's World Cup WEURO: UEFA European Women's Championship Competition stages Other abbreviations F: Final GS: Group stage (aet): After extra time pens: Penalties GS1: First group stage GS2: Second group stage No.: Number og: Own goal 3QR: Third qualifying round R1: First round ag: Match decided on away P: Penalty R2: Second round R3: Third round goals agg: Aggregate R4: Fourth round PR: Preliminary round Pld: Matches played AP: Appearances SF: Semi-finals QF: Quarter-finals Pos.: Position Comp.: Competition R16: round of 16 QR: Qualifying round Pts: Points D: Drawn R32: Round of 32 1QR: First qualifying round R: Sent off (straight red card) DoB: Date of birth 1st: first leg 2QR: Second qualifying Res.: Result ET: Extra Time round sg: Match decided by silver GA: Goals against 2nd: second leg FT: Final tournament goal t: Match decided by toss of a PO: Play-off ELITE: Elite round coin Rep: Replay 3rdPO: Third-place play-off GF: Goals for W: Won PO - FT: Play-off for Final GS-FT: Group stage – final gg: Match decided by golden Y: Booked Tournament tournament goal L: Lost Y/R: Sent off (two yellow Nat.: Nationality cards) N/A: Not applicable Statistics -: Denotes player substituted +: Denotes player introduced *: Denotes player sent off +/-: Denotes player introduced and substituted Squad list D: Disciplinary *: Misses next match if booked S: Suspended QUAL: All UEFA qualifiers UEL: Current season total UEFA Europa League appearances from the group stage onwards prior to the current matchday UEL: Total appearances in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final only UEFA: All-time total appearances in UEFA club competition including qualifying Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this document is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness.

FINANCE AND FOOTBALL The market reaction to football player transfers in Europe Master Thesis School of Economics and Management Department of Finance Author: Douros Athanasios ANR: 857395 Supervisor: Prof. Dr. L.D.R. Renneboog Second Reader: Prof. Frank de Jong October 2013 1 The market reaction to football player transfers in Europe The market reaction to football player transfers in Europe Abstract This paper sheds further light on the impact on shareholders wealth from sales and acquisitions of football players within a football club. Our empirical analysis employs an event study using data from 30 listed football clubs in Europe. The study covers the period 1998 to 2012. We find evidence that the sale of players results in positive abnormal club stock returns and the acquisition of players is associated with negative club stock returns around the date of the event. These results indicate asymmetric wealth effects and support nonsynergetic theories of human resources turnover. We take subsamples of our dataset separating to UK and non UK clubs and transfers that occurred in the playing and the close season. We also test the relationship of cumulative abnormal returns around the event date with four set of explanatory variables which represent the player characteristics, buying club characteristics, selling club characteristics and time effects by using OLS regressions. 2 The market reaction to football player transfers in Europe Table of Contents 1. • Steve Mcclaren: the Man Who Took FC Twente's Slogan Away
Steve McClaren: The man who took FC Twente’s slogan away A club experiencing both Steve McClaren's competence and shortcomings is FC Twente, whose slogan once was: “One day we will be champions” Friday 19th June 2015 by Paul Benneworth Our thanks once again to our Geordie exile in Holland, Paul Benneworth, who this time shines a light on Steve McClaren, the man who turned FC Twente into Champions. Despite the curious - if not out-of-character - manner of his unveiling, Newcastle United have generated some positivity with Steve McClaren’s appointment as head coach. At Middlesbrough, he led the last north east club to win serious silverware, and he has always retained his strong regional links. He’s clearly no world-class manager in the mould of Pep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho. Too many short, unsuccessful managerial spells did nothing to dent his passion for the game and his willingness to take on short-term assistant roles. (To feature like Paul, send in your articles for our website to [email protected]) He’s probably long beyond being driven by a mixture of hunger and a belief that he’s a man on an sharply upward curve. In choosing NUFC, the step up from the Championship offers a chance to restore some lustre to a distinctly tarnished reputation. The phrase ‘flawed genius’ applied to a manager, conjures up an image of a Jekyll-and-Hyde trainer whose tactical nous and daring gambits leads their club to the brink of greatness, only to fail at the last, leaving their club fighting for its survival.
