In 2010 ECA published its first Research Facts & Key figures CAN 2010 which highlighted the importance of African players registered in one of the European National Championships. The second Research Facts & Key figures CAN 2012 showed a slight decrease due to the fact that National teams of Cameroon, Nigeria, Togo, Benin were not qualified for the 2012 edition (teams with more than 60% of players playing in Europe). The 2013 Edition confirmed the trend of the 2010 Edition with the majority of players playing with clubs in Europe. The 2013 CAN figures show that 188 players out of 368 ( 51.1% ) are playing in one of 26 European National Championships. 10. Florian Thauvin The 2012-13 campaign was an incredible success for Florian Thauvin, but also one wrapped in controversy surrounding his transfer window manoeuvrings and is fast earning the rather maligned reputation as one of French football’s greatest troublemakers. His transformation in just two and a half seasons on the pitch is however venerable. Thauvin accomplished in converting himself from a bit part performer grappling in Ligue 2 during the 2011-2012 campaign, to SC Bastia’s best player in Ligue 1 in a period of 6 months from August 2012 until January of the following year. This earned “Flo-Thauv”, as he has started to refer to himself on social networking platform Twitter, a move to Ligue 1 heavyweights Lille from the Corsican club in January 2013. Thauvin was then loaned back to the Corsicans for the remainder of the season, but glittering performances on the pitch in the first six months of this year made the player personally confident that he should be playing in the Champions League, Europe’s top-tier competition, and thus when Lille failed to qualify for the competition, he forced through a move to Marseille. This move on deadline day of the summer window was amid interest from the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle, but the player did not think he was old enough to make the move away from his homeland as of yet. This episode from the 20 year old midfielder has dented his reputation in France and beyond, with many now referring to him as the ‘brat’ of French football with Lille boss Rene Girard adding that he felt the France U21’s international should have been banned for his ‘appalling’ actions. -

The Gffn 100 2018: Ten to Watch
GFFN 100 2018 THE GFFN 100: AN INTRODUCTION Welcome to another edition of the Get French Football News 100. Published at the end of ev- ery year by GFFN, the guide you are reading is as detailed and comprehensive a set of player profiles as one is likely to find, especially in English. Some of these players are well-known, even to the casual fan, and though they have been the subjects of countless profiles, we hope that you can gain a bit more depth in knowledge of their stories. This is especially true with the likes of Neymar and his Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Kylian Mbappé. In 2018, neither was ever far from the limelight in a year in which France won the World Cup, thanks in large part to the teen- age sensation. Neymar may have garnered the odd headline for less positive reasons, but both remain as compelling off the pitch as they do on it. It is thus no surprise to see Mbappé top the rankings again; it does not take much objectivity to realise his immense talent and potential, but the present document is much more than a narra- tive driven by celebrity. We have watched the matches that do not generate headlines, seen the teams that are rarely on television, especially internationally, and artfully blended statistical anal- ysis with old-fashioned scouting to create what we feel is a definitive guide to the professionals currently plying their trade in France. If some rankings seem high, or low, read the profiles before making a snap decision as to our choices; this is a meritocracy. -
