At the other end, the Northwood defence dealt with a surging run and cross from the lively Khan. Woods needed something to show for their first half dominance and Charles saw another shot gathered by Campbell after good work from Witham, before the latter had a shot blocked after El Kabouche and Matos had combined to create the opening. But Northwood suffered the sucker-punch as the Terrors took the lead against the run of play on 44 minutes, Khan latching onto Antonio Simeone’s long ball from the back and shooting inside Sheldrick’s near post. Woods came out for the second period in determined fashion and Witham, who was enjoying a fine debut, saw his first time effort parried by Campbell before another shot was charged down by the home defence. But Northwood finally found a way past Campbell as they drew level on 51 minutes, Jenkins heading home from a Stevens free-kick for his third goal of the season. Woods maintained the pressure as Witham saw his fierce 20-yard shot tipped over the bar while Pearce had a header from a Charles corner deflected off the line. The hosts briefly threatened as Stefan Ilic almost capitalised on some rare hesitation in the Northwood defence, but the visitors were soon asking questions again as the impressive Jenkins combined with Witham before rolling the ball narrowly wide off his weaker left foot. Northwood had a great chance to take the Tooting: Morgan Campbell, Ajani Domingo-Carrington, lead as Lucan was played in by Witham but the Peter Wedgeworth, Eddie Dines (Danny Bassett 60m), winger’s shot cannoned off Campbell’s legs. osting a free-scoring Hayes & Yeading, a Hwonder goal from Zaied Sabti almost saw Northwood fight back from a two-nil deficit to earn a draw. But two first half goals from Lee Barney and Scott Donnelly were enough for table-topping Hayes. TUESDAY 5TH FEBRUARY 2019 | BOSTIK LEAGUE | THE ACRETWEED STADIUM Manager Scott Dash made a few alterations to the starting eleven, with Jon Munday, Jabir Laraba and Dan Pett all dropping to the bench, being replaced by Carl Pearce, Andrew Ofosu and Sabti. Hayes started off the brighter side at a damp Acretweed Stadium, and eleven minutes into the game their sharp start paid off. A defensive mistake by Dan Newton saw Ash Nzala steal the ball to play a pass across the box into the path of Lee Barney, who had just enough time to take a touch and finish into the bottom right corner. Not deterred, Northwood had a handful of chances to bring it back level, the best of which coming from a great-defence splitting ball from Kweku Lucan putting Trey Charles in behind the visitors’ defence, but his shot went straight down the keeper’s throat. Although a few chances had come and gone for the Woods, Hayes & Yeading were still the dominant side. And at one point they were playing Tiki-taka-esque football, with their audacious one-touch passing move finishing with Toby Little’s shot being blocked out for a corner. The subsequent corner was fumbled by Luke Sheldrick, but right-back Dan Newton was there to save his blushes as he heroically headed the whipped shot off the line. But only a couple minutes later Hayes got their second of the match, a 20-yard looping volley beat the helpless Sheldrick, gifting the visitors a two-goal advantage at half-time. Both teams had opportunities at the start of the second half. Little’s cross almost beat Sheldrick at the far post, and at the other end of the pitch, Lucan’s shot lacked composure after a strong driving run. With just over 25 minutes to go, Hayes should have got their third, failing to nestle the ball in the back of the net after four shots in under one minute. The best chance fell to Nzala, who Northwood: Luke Sheldrick, Dan Newton, Miguel Matos, mistimed his shot from six yards out. Kieran Asumadu-Sakyi (Leigh Stevens 64m), Imran A few minutes later and against the run of play, Uche, Carl Pearce, Zaied Sabti (Dan Pett 78m), Chris Zaied Sabti scored what could easily be goal of Gosling, Andrew Ofosu, Kweku Lucan (Kyran Worrell 81m), the season, the shot from 30 yards completely Tremayne Charles surprising the away side’s helpless goalkeeper. POINT By The Non-League Paper’s RESULTS & FIXTURES 2018-19 Tue 24 Jul KODAK 1st XI (F) L 0-2 MATT BADCOCK Mon 30 Jul Harefield United (F) W 3-1 Wed 1 Aug COCKFOSTERS (F) W 6-0 Wed 8 Aug Uxbridge (F) W 3-1 or years the debate around technology raged. Should football have it? Should it not? Will Thur 16 Aug NORTHWOOD XI (F) L 1-3 it help? Will it take away the spontaneity and disrupt the flow of the game? The answers Mon 20 Aug Camberley Town L 1-4 Fstill aren’t all that clear. In last year’s Russian World Cup there were some decisions where Thur 30 Aug Potters Bar Town (LC) L 2-4 its use made absolute sense. There were others times that left everyone scratching their heads. Thur 6 Sep BRIMSDOWN (FAYC) W 5-0 Essentially it is used in four scenarios. Goals and whether there was a violation in the build-up like an Mon 10 Sep Aldershot Town L 0-1 offside or foul. The next is for penalty decisions – general fouls aren’t reviewable unless it is a direct Mon 17 Sep Colney Heath (FAYC) L 1-2* red card. And the final option is for cases of mistaken identity when yellow or red cards are issued. Thur 11 Oct HAYES & YEADING UNITED D 2-2 The system is something everyone is clearly getting used to – referees, players and fans. That is a big Wed 17 Oct Wealdstone W 4-3 part of the problem. Having held off for so long, it’s like to football powers were so desperate to use Thur 25 Oct POTTERS BAR TOWN L 1-3 it that the process has been completely rushed. Thur 8 Nov WEALDSTONE L 0-3 Supporters inside the stadium and at home watching on TV don’t fully know what is happening. In Thur 15 Nov UXBRIDGE (MSYC) W 2-0 cricket and rugby, we at least hear the conversation between the officials. In American Football, decisions are literally announced to the crowd. Thur 22 Nov BEDFONT SPORTS L 0-3 Thur 6 Dec HAMPTON & RICHMOND B L 1-2 But football too often treats its fans – customers – like a school child with a box of matches. The lack Thur 13 Dec HANWELL TOWN (MSYC) L 0-1 of transparency that masks many areas of the game is the same here. Eventually showing a replay doesn’t really cut it. Thur 10 Jan CAMBERLEY TOWN L 0-5 Thur 17 Jan ALDERSHOT TOWN L 1-4 Clips should be shown inside stadiums and we should hear the officials arrive at their verdict. Wed 23 Jan Hayes & Yeading United L 2-4 Instead fans in the ground wait for a man with his finger in his ear to make an arm signal. Mon 11 Feb Bedfont Sports L 0-4 VAR is not something Non-League clubs are going to be worrying about any time soon, if ever. Apart Wed 27 Feb Hampton & Richmond Boro Away from when it comes to the FA Cup. The system was introduced during last year’s competition. Mon 4 Mar Staines Town Away Let’s be clear. If correct decisions are being reached because of it, then all well and good. But surely Thur 14 Mar STAINES TOWN HOME there has to be a level playing field. The fact is, not all grounds have it. Thur 21 Mar Potters Bar Town Away Take the other weekend, for example. Championship side Sheffield Wednesday were awarded a * after extra time penalty at Chelsea. VAR was in operation, the decision was looked at and the Chelsea defender clearly won the ball. Penalty overturned and on we go – although Wednesday would have felt they should instead have been awarded a corner rather than the drop ball that restarted the game. A couple of weeks ago, Barnet had Brentford on the ropes. Having fallen behind, Darren Currie’s side swung the tie back their way with two quick goals from Shaq Coulthirst. But just seven minutes later, Brentford were thrown a lifeline. Referee Andy Madley adjudged David SAVE THE CHILDREN YOUTH LEAGUE WEST DIVISION Tutonda to have fouled Ollie Watkins in the box. Replays clearly show there was no contact. It’s Including 17.2.19 P W D L F A Pts not even up for debate. Watkins, probably expecting contact, went down untouched. He’s since apologised. Bedfont Sports 10 9 1 0 39 13 28 Staines Town 11 7 1 3 36 22 22 Despite the game being shown live on BT Sport and replays within seconds showing a clear angle, Camberley Town 7 6 0 1 29 6 18 there was nothing that could be done because VAR was having the night off. Brentford scored, went on to take the lead before Dan Sparkes’ wonderful free-kick made it 3-3 and booked a replay. Potters Bar Town 8 4 4 0 17 12 16 Wealdstone 11 3 2 6 21 28 11 It’s all Sliding Doors, but who’s to say if VAR had been deployed that Barnet wouldn’t have gone on Aldershot Town 7 3 1 3 16 14 10 to win the game 2-1 and proceed to the fifth round, banking £180,000 while they’re at it? Hayes & Yeading United 10 1 3 6 22 41 6 There has to be parity across the competition to keeps its integrity. VAR should only come into Hampton & Richmond Borough 8 1 1 6 10 28 4 operation from a certain stage, say, the quarter-finals. Where it is likely most clubs will be in the Northwood 12 1 1 10 12 38 4 Premier League and able to cope with what is needed or arrangements can be made. Ashford Town - withdrawn 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 It can’t be one set of rules for the fortunate big boys and another for the so-called minnows.
