Among other types of lesions, ulceration is the most commonly found lesion in the oral mucosa, especially in the outpatient unit. Oral Medicine Integrated Installation (OMII) Department in Universitas Padjadjaran Dental Hospital serves as the centre of oral health and education services, particularly in handling outpatient oral medicine cases. This research was the first study done in the Department which aimed to observe the distribution of oral ulceration in OMII Department university Dental Hospital. The data is essential in studying the epidemiology of the diseases. Methods: The research was a descriptive study using the patient’s medical data between 2010 and 2012. The data were recorded with Microsoft® Excel, then analysed and presented in the table and diagram using GraphPad Prism® Results: During the study, the distribution of oral ulceration cases found in OMII Department was 664 which comprises of traumatic ulcers, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, angular cheilitis, herpes simplex, herpes labialis, and herpes zoster. Additionally, more than 50% of the total case was recurrent aphthous stomatitis, with a precise number of 364. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the OMII Department in university Dental Hospital had been managing various oral ulceration cases, with the most abundant cases being recurrent aphthous stomatitis. -

May 2008 Oral ulcers and oral thrush could be indicative of serious illnesses such as oral cancer, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), among others. There are many different health care workers that can be approached for advice and/or treatment for oral ulcers and oral thrush (sometimes referred to as mouth sores by patients), including pharmacists. In fact, the mild and intermittent nature of oral ulcers and oral thrush may most likely lead the patient to present to a pharmacist for immediate treatment. In addition, certain aspects of access are exempt at a pharmacy such as long queues and waiting times, the need to make an appointment and the cost for consultation. Thus pharmacies may serve as a reservoir of undetected cases of oral cancer, HIV and other STIs. Aim: To determine how community pharmacists in the Western Cape manage oral ulcers and oral thrush. Objectives: The data set included the prevalence of oral complaints confronted by pharmacists, how they manage oral ulcers, oral thrush and mouth sores, their knowledge about these conditions, and the influence of socio-economic status (SES) and metropolitan location (metro or non-metro) on recognition and management of the lesions. -

Mouth ulcers: • Aphthous ulcers more commonly known as mouth ulcers is a collective term used to describe various different clinical presentations of superficial painful oral lesions that occur in recurrent bouts at intervals between few day to a few months. • The majority of patients (80%) who present in a community pharmacy will have minor(MAU), Prevalence an Epidemiology: • For MAU, the prevalence is poorly understood. • Occur in all ages but more common in (20-40). Aetiology: • The cause of MAU is unknown. • A number of theories have been but forward to explain like: food sensitivity, stress, genetic, nutritional deficiencies( iron ,zinc, B12) and infection. Arriving at differential diagnosis: • There are three main clinical presentation to ulcers: minor, major, herpetiform. Clinical features of MAU • Roundish in shape. • Grey-white in colour. • Painful. • Small usually less than 1cm in diameter. • Occur singly or in small crops of up to 5 ulcers. • Takes 7-14 days to heal. • Recurrence can occur after 1-4 months. Conditions to eliminate 1.major aphthous ulcers: • Larger than 1 cm in diameter. • Numerous. • Occurring in crops of 10 or more. • Heal slowly may take months. • The ulcers often coalesce to form one large ulcer. 2.Herpetiform ulcers: • Ulcers are pinpoint and occur in large crops of up to 100 at a time. • They usually heal within a month. • Occur in the posterior part of the mouth( an unusual location for MAU). 3.Oral thrush: • Usually presents as creamy- white soft elevated patches.
