RE: Zheng Pitt Spec Award

Dear Selection Committee:

Zheng Ouyang has been a key figure in a series of dramatic advances in what might be called ‘real world’ mass spectrometry. This involves analysis of often complex samples for small molecule drugs, and for compounds of concern for environmental, food safety, and forensic reasons. This ‘blue collar’ area of science has not received the attention accorded to methods that break resolution records or perform other exotic feats. What it does however, is address real societal issues by performing analytical measurements in a cost effective fashion. The examples of this type of measurement range from fentanyls in blood to Sudan dyes in food, from drug metabolites in serum to phospholipid biomarkers in tissue. The solutions that Ouyang has championed combine two elements: ambient ionization for speed and simplicity and portable mass spectrometers for on-site analysis. The ambient ionization method that Ouyang invented is paper spray ionization, commercialized as OmniSpray ® by Prosolia and very recently as PaperSpray ® by Thermo. This method is simple, fast, and quantitative, and particularly well-suited to drugs in biofluids and forensics analyses. The method has been cited some 750 times. There are, according to the Web of Science, 4 highly cited papers on this topic since it was invented in 2010 , and each is authored by Ouyang. Ambient ionization methods are ideally suited to in situ use with portable mass spectrometers. Here too, Zheng Ouyang has made enormous contributions, in leading a Purdue team that developed the Mini 11 and 12 versions of ion trap MS/MS capable instruments. Substantial improvements in ion introduction, vacuum systems, and ion trap operation are included in these compact instruments and a substantial patent portfolio underlies this academic lab effort. Subsequently, Ouyang has established (in both the US and China) a company, PurSpec which is marketing these instruments. Marketing a technology is a necessary aspect of providing a technology to the public and this was Prof. Ouyang’s motivation.

Prof Ouyang has served the national analytical chemistry community through his inventions, publications, role in journals and through the series of symposia at Pittcon on Miniature Mass Spectrometers. These have been held for eight years and a ninth is planned. The symposium in 2018 was selected as the Waters Symposium.

The strength of his scholarship is evident from the 13,000 times his 160 papers have been cited (h index 63). Perhaps even more notable is the commercialization of his paper spray technology by Prosolia and recently Waters, his 55 US patents and his role as CEO and founder of PurSpec Technologies, a mini mass spectrometry company. Dr Ouyang’s work has been

Zheng Ouyang is certainly the most inventive person I have ever worked with. He is brilliant, highly creative, and a good colleague. I believe him to be extremely highly deserving of this honor, which will bring appropriate credit to him and encourage the international exchange of information, which underlies all of science.

Sincerely,

R. Graham Cooks

SSP Spectroscopy Award Committee

2019 Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award Chairman c/o Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh 300 Penn Center Blvd., Suite 332 Pittsburgh, PA 15235-5503

Dear Selection Committee:

I am delighted to support the nomination of Professor Zheng Ouyang for The Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award. I can think of no other candidate who is such an outstanding match to this award – for outstanding contributions in the field of applied spectroscopy. Dr. Ouyang’s interest in applied work is evident from early in his career when he obtained engineering bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Automation Control. He expanded from there to Master’s, PhD, and postdoc work in Analytical Chemistry at Purdue, a premier university for analytical chemistry instrument development research. Dr. Ouyang’s many achievements are evident in the documentation provided with the award nomination. He has not only published a large number of papers but they are highly cited, resulting in an h index that is likely the envy of many senior colleagues. He not only has a large numbers of patents (55) but those inventions have been turned into technology/devices that benefit the public. Despite his surely hectic research and development schedule, including an academic position and running a company, Dr. Ouyang still makes time to interact with and lead the analytical community (e.g., editorial boards and editorships, session organization at Pittcon, co- organization of US-China Analytical Chemistry workshops). Dr. Ouyang also cares about development of young students and faculty as indicated by his request to meet with me to discuss the career path of one of my PhD graduates who was vacillating about whether to take a faculty job in the US or China. Dr. Ouyang really cared that this young scientist make the right choice for his future career.

Many years ago when I was interviewing for an academic position, a faculty member criticized me for not proposing to build the biggest, most expensive mass spectrometer that I could think of. I replied that while there is some value in those unique ultra-expensive instruments that make one-of-a-kind measurements, a just-as-important or more important contribution may be from those who make less expensive instruments accessible to applications that benefit humans daily in multiple ways. Zheng Ouyang’s many significant contributions are important because they make measurements accessible to real-world applications. Please reward his amazing applied mass spectrometry contributions with the Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award.

Sincerely,

Vicki Wysocki, Ph.D. Professor and Ohio Eminent Scholar Director, Campus Chemical Instrumentation Center
