We have also been alerted that Inkatha members inside the Alexandra hostel are planning another attack on the civic office! Jama i noL .he only victim of this recent, politically motivated violence, We have just learned that since Sunday, Nov. 3, Alexandra residents have suffered daily shooting and stabbing attacks by the Inkatha membera who have taken over the township hostel. It i±- no t nnidence at tihese attacks have taken place this week. On Monday and Tuesday, November 4 and 5, COSATU and the ANC called a highly successful 2 day n.atv:nal strike involving 3.5 .lllion ;orkers. This action was in protest of deKlerk's recent im,! ..ition of a new regressive nationr t tax system, Value Added Tax. VAT will increase pric-i of consumer goods, food, and the previously untaxed informal sector. This will hit hardes.. those already impoverished by apartheac Alexandra township, located just outside Johannesburg, has one of the strongest civic organizations in the country. On Sunday the 3rd, they held a public community meeting to educate residents about the Ltay-away. The Inkatha attacks began immediately after that meeting, once again pointing to their political agenda of squelching protests agaonnst the South African government. A common denominator appears to * be their effectiveness within their communities, which gives rise to the ANC's conviction diat a campaign to eliminate activists is under way. The ANC's eastern Transvaal iegional secretary, Joe Nkuna, was attacked by assailants on October 3. Publicity secretary Jackson Mthembu said the attack came a week afer the office received a hoax call "from a known member of the police", saying Nkuna had been shot. FORMAL REPRESSION OF PERSONS I Detenlon without Trial Detentinm Releases Still Held: Transkei 2 TOTAL' 2 Cormment Three Danish jouMalists and a Maftkeng Anf-Repression Forum member were detained in Matikeng on the 26th after visiting 26 hunger-striking political prisoners in Sophelong Hospital. Mr Jesper Hiorth (a sub-editor at Denmaik's largest daily newspaper), Mr Niels Frid-Nielson (a TV journalist) and Mr Rjarke Larsen (a reporter for the Berlingske Tidende news agency) were questioned by the security police for over an hour before being released, but Ms Nomvula Hlangwana was held overnight before being teleased and charged under the Prison's Act. It was reported that as he was requesting permission to pass on the food. he witnessed police assaulting a woman in the charge office and when he remonstrated with them to end the assault, he was beaten up and thrown into the cells for the night. Deaths in Police qustody A post-mortem report has revealed that a South African Democratic Teacher's Union (SADTU) member, Mr Solly Pamakgale, died in Lebowa police custody on the 14th October after being assaulted with a blunt object. It was reported that Mr Ramakgale was assaulted when he was arrested for investigation of two charges of crimen injuria, one of theft of clothing and one of malicious damage to property, and that he was further assaulted at the police ;tation. A Lebowa police spokesperson said that police overe investigating charges of assault against several policemen but no one had yet been chargeu. This brings the total number of deaths in police custody this year to 8. A Johannesburg Inquest Court found that three policemen, Sqt Jacobus Postma, Const. Marthinus Smit and Const. Edwin Mkopane, were criminally liable for the death of an awaiting trial prisoner, Mr Uys Namane, in the Hillbrow police station cells during February 13/14 last year. A post-mortem revealed that Mr Namane was suffering from 13 3 an eniarged heart, broricho-pneumonia and anemia. The Inquest magistrate found, when delivering the ruling, that the policemen knew that Mr Namane had to recieve urgent medical attention after bettg called to Diepkloof Prison to take him to hospital, and yet they took him to Hillbrow police station, where he was found dead the following morning. The magistrate found that by not taking Mr Namane for treatment timeously, the policemen had deprived him of his 10 percent chance of surviving. Political Prisoners Huncqer-Strike Update: 31 polrtical prisoners in Bophuthatswana remain on hungerstrike. it has been established that Bushy Molefe (30), an ex-member of the Bop Defence Force serving an 8-year sentence for treason in connection with the 1988 coup attempt, has been fasting since the 23rd September while the others started their hunger-strikes on various days between the 5th and the 10th October. I - ' REPRESSION OF THE MEDIA I On the 26th Bophuthatswana police set up a roadblock outside Braklaagte village in an attempt to prevent a group of 14 Danish journalists from interviewing Chief Pupsey Sebogodi, leader of the Braklaagte community and a key figure in the community's struggle against te forced incorporation of the village into the homeland. However, the interview did take place when Chief Sebogodi went to the Bop/RSA "boundary line" and met some of the journalists just outside the "line" and in full view of the police at the roadblock. SECURITY FORCE ACTIONS During this period, 1 person was killed. 7 people injured and 336 arrested as a result of security force action.

Cape 3 I Ciskei - 311 1 L TOTAL 1 736 j PNV Sowato-Mshenguville Police reported that on the 26 October, two people were injured when police fired birdshot at a group of people who allegedly fired at them. The police then arrested four people. Two people were arrested the next day for the same incident WESTERN TRANS VAAL Hartebeesfontein On the 23 October, police allegedly assaulted an MK member while he was participating in a march in the town. The march was organised by a number of political bodies to protest the proposed incorporation of the area into Bophuthatswana, the Moordkop base near the town, and to demand that the area be proclaimed a township and upgraded. Residents fear that the Moordkop base, where ex-Koevoet soldiers are based, will be used as a launching pad for vigilante attacks against residents resisting incorporation. NATAL Durban-Umlazi On the 24 October, Mr Sifiso Zama was shot dead and Mr Bheki Hadebe and a young child were injured when they were shct at, allegedly by SAP members. The incident occured when Mr Zama and Mr Hadebe were playing soccer in the street and a car pulled up next to them and the occupants shot them. Midlands-Moci River On the 24 October police arrested 3 people in Bruntile. reportedly on a murder charge. Ten people were also arrested after a person in the back of a police vehicle allegedly pointed them out. They were released later without being charged. It was also reported that the riot police, armed with shotguns, fired at several houses. The police responded to these claims saying that police had fired six rubber bullets at a group of about 50 ANC supporters who were tryinq to free the three arrested people from a police vehicle. ANC supporting residents embarked on a stayaway on the 14 October to protest Inkatha supporters carrying "traditional weapons" in the streets of Mooi River.

S Coast-Umgababa On the 27 October, two people were arrested and allegedly assaulted by members of the SADF. The two were released the next day without being charged. It was also reported that members of the SADF assaulted youths returning from a meeting in the area. EASTERN CAPE Midlands-Murraysburg On the 25 October police arrested ANC member, Mr Samuel Oliphant, when five other ANC members, arrested in September, were on their way to court. He was charged with intimidation and escaping from the police. NORTHERN CAPE Paoalleio On the 21 October. three ANC members were arrested in the township when a group of 150-200 ANC supporters, who had been denied permission to use the community hall and teargassed at the local police station, burnt barricades and allegedly threw stones at a Casspir. Those arrested were later released. CISKEi Alice On the 25 October, police arrested 11 members of the Residents Committee (all aged between 65 and 72) for stoning a headman's home in Hala. Residents reported that 6 police vans arrived after the stoning and arrested only elderly people. Those arrested were released the next day on charges of malicious damage to property. lzeli On the 27 October, police arrested 300 members of the ANC and residents association (most of whom were students) when they allegedly burnt down Mr Bhesi Mevana's house, shop and car. Mr Mevana is an African Demccrat.c Movement (ADM) organiser for the headman system. INFORMAL REPRESSION VIGILANTE-RELATED ACTIONS I During this period we recorded 29 deaths and. 61 ;nirries resulting from Vigilanterelated auaons. ARLA DLATHS INJURIES PWV 16 46 Nlatal 13 15 , TOTAL 29 61 1 pwv East Rand-Phola Park Police reported that on the 23 October, a man was found with serious gunshot injuries. East Rand-Thokoza On the 22 October, four people were injured when gunmen opened fire with AK- 47's on passengers getting off a bus shortly after midnight East Rand-Thakoza Police reported that on the 23 October, they found the body of a man in the township. East Rand-Thokoza On the 26 October, four people were injured by a group of gunmen who shot at them when they were trying to board a taxi. It was alleged that after the attack the attackers said *Batowethu asihambeni. Sesiwenzile umzebenzi" (Gents let's go. We have done the joo). Johannesburg On the 22 October, a man was killed and another injured on a Johannesburg- bound train between New Canada and Longdale stations when a group of people attacked commuters. It was reported that the man was killed when he tried to jump from the train to escape two groups of people fighting for control of the train. Soweto-Klipspruit/Orlando On the 23 October, nine people were killed and 36 injured in an attack on commuters at Nancefieid and Orlando stations. it was reported that the attack was sparked off when Mr Pumlane Mongoma (23), a Nancefield Hostel resident, was stabbed at the Nancefield Station while trying to board a train. Mr Mongoma then allegedly went bacK to the hostel for help and died on the way to hospital. It was then alleged that Nancefield Hostel residents armed themselves and attacked commuters at the station before getting on a train and attacking more commuters while the train made its way to Orlando Station, where there were more attackers waiting. It was also alleged that the attack was planned and that it was a result of an on-going battle between ANC and lnkatha supporters for control of certain trains and coaches. The two groups reportedly argued the day before and Inkatha supporters had threatened to attack for that dy. Soweto-Meadowlands On the 23 October, a 6-year-old child was killed when a group of Zulu-speaking people wearing red-headbands and armed with pangas and knobkerries, attacked the area. The attack was unusual in that it was in a relatively wealthy area, whereas most of the previous attacks have been on squatter camps and poverty- striken areas. West Rand-Rooaepoort It was reported that on the 21 October, 3 people were shot dead at Westgate Station at about -1 pm.

West Rand-Roodepoort Police reported that on the 23 October, the body of a man was found at Westgate Station. NATAL Durban-KwaMashu On the 22 October, Ms Zodwa Radebe was seriously injured when members of the Amasinyora gang attacked residents in K-section. One of the attackers was allegedly also involved in an attacK on Mr Solomon Nhleko on the 20 October. Midlands-Mooi River On the 21 October, a man was shot dead and another wounded by attackers armed with AK-47 rifles in Bruntville. There have been a number of clashes between ANC and Inkatha supporters in the township and the town resulting in ANC supporters embarking on a stayaway to protest Inkatha supporters carrying 'traditional weapons" in the towi. Midiands-Rictmond Police reported that on the 23 October, a man was slightly injured when gunmen fired -t a vehicle. N Coast-Mashiwashe On the 21 October, three people who attended an ANC meeting were shot dead, allegedly by men wearing camouflage uniforms. S Coast-Adams Mission On the 24 October, two people were killed and a number injured when a group of heavily armed people from a different area attacked three homes in the area. A few weeks ago Inkatha supporters had reportedly threatened to attack the area, because the residents there had not assisted them in assaults on ANC supporters in the Umbumbulo asea. S Coast-Port Shepstone Police reported that in Murchison on the 24 October, a person was shot dead by unknown gunmen. S Coast-Umbumbulo On the 26 October, six people were killed and 12 seriously injured when a hand grenade was thrown into Mr Mburnzini Shezi's home. Mr Shezi is a well known warlord in the area. He was not at home at the time of the attack.

AREA PEATHS INJURIES 7 WCpo 1TOTAL 2 PVVV Soweto-Pmville O1 the 26 October, Mr Anihony Zuma (tio), secretary of the Orlando East ANC branch, was killed when he was gunnea down and his car stolen. rIhe attack ,- ccured when Mr Zuma was waiting in his ,ar Fna three men, one armed with a handgun, surprised him arid demanded his keys. Mr Zuma argued with his attackers who then shot him and drove off in his car. The ANC reported that the gunmen had followed Mr Zuma in a car from his home in Orlando East to Pimville. Peninsula-Nyanga On the .'27 October. a Lagunya tdAxi driver, Mr Tyopo, was shot dead at the Nyanga terminus by a Ungelethu West town councillor, Mr Michael Gubayo. Mr Gubayo was arrested soon after the incident and appeared briefly in the Athlone court on the 28 October, though no charges were put to him.
