An Mhaigh Tír na nÓg G.A.C. Centenary Year 2008 This year was like none other for the Gaels of An Mhaigh Tír na nÓg G.A.C. as we proudly marked the occasion of our club’s 100th birthday. The Centenary celebrations began back in January and have been in full swing ever since. The following is a month by month account of what has been a truly special year for everyone associated with G.A.A. in the Moy. January Moy celebrate being the first winners of the new Gerry White/Gary O’Callaghan Memorial Cup having defeated Antrim club O’Donovan Rossa at Shaw’s Road, Belfast over the Christmas period. The Charity football match raised £850 for the N.I. Hospice. The first official event in our club’s Centenary Year took place when a good mix of young and older Gaels gathered at Moy Parochial Hall for the Annual General Meeting. P.B. Laverty (Cathaoirleach), Mary Daly (Rúnai) and Raymond McKeown (Cisteoir) were once again returned unopposed, and it was most encouraging to see so many willing volunteers added to the various sub-committees. Secretary Mary Daly was also honoured with a life-time club membership due to her long and outstanding service. The club is pleased to announce the appointment of Mattie McGleenan as our new senior team manager for 2008. Meanwwhile, four of Moy’s top senior footballers - Colm and Sean Cavanagh, Philip Jordan and Ryan Mellon - have once again been included in the Tyrone County panel for the forthcoming National Football League. Moy and Dromore share the distinction of having the biggest quota of players in the county set-up. February The opening round of the 2008 Scór Sinsear in Tyrone took place with An Mhaigh G.A.C. represented in both the Amhránaíocht Aonaoir (Solo Singing) and Tráth na gCeisteanna (Question Time). Ryan O’Neill qualified for the next round with a wonderful recital of ‘Only Our Rivers Run Free’ and also had the added honour of singing our National Anthem at the start of proceedings in Eskra. Meanwhile, our quiz team of Kevin Mallon, P.B. Laverty and Colin Mackle missed out on a semi-final place by the narrowest of margins. A large number of club members and friends went back in time when attending an Eighties Theme Night and Fancy Dress Disco in Loughran’s Bar, Moy. The event was a resounding success and raised an excellent sum of money for the club. Everyone who came along on the night entered into the spirit of the occasion by dressing up as their favourite 1980s Pop Idol, Film Star, Sports Personality or Television Icon. In the absence of regular team captain Brian Dooher, Moy player Philip Jordan had the honour of leading his county out for the start of the National Football League competition. Moy ladies footballer Nina Murphy was a member of the victorious UUJ team which won the prestigious Dowd Cup in Belfast. She was a key attacker for her University throughout the campaign, producing a series of terrific displays in a competition that featured some of the finest student ladies footballers from across Ulster. Nina also celebrates being named along with her club colleagues Patricia Conroy and Eimear McKearney on the Tyrone county senior squad for 2008. P.B.’s Bar, Moy provided the setting for the official An Mhaigh Tír na nÓg G.A.C. Centenary Launch Night. It is the first in a series of exciting events to commemorate the 100th birthday of our club’s formation. One of the highlights of the night was the unveiling and presentation of Moy’s new Senior and Reserve team jerseys sponsored by McAvoy Off Site. An enjoyable night ended with a live Irish music session and everyone in attendance was treated to a free supper. March Moy minor girls had the honour of playing the first match at Pairc Thír na nÓg in 2008 when they entertained Badoney on the opening day of the Under 18 League. Despite putting up a strong challenge in their first competitive game of the season, Moy’s Under 14 league campaign began on a losing note at home to Ardboe. They also go down by a point in Kildress this month. Moy ladies hosted their Annual Pub Quiz in P.B.’s Bar, Moy. Nine teams in all took part in a tremendous battle of wits. Mickey Kavanagh did a fine job as quizmaster and was ably assisted on the night by Ladies Chairman Ryan O’Neill who performed the role of scorekeeper. Eimear McKearney was in Tyrone’s starting line-up for the Ladies N.F.L. Division One match at home to Wexford. It was a dream debut for the Tír na nÓg net-minder as Tyrone cruised to an emphatic 3-23 to 1-6 victory in Trillick. It was with deep regret and sorrow that the officers, players and members of An Mhaigh Tír na nÓg G.A.C. learned of the deaths of two great Moy Gaels. Former playing and committee member Peter McKearney and former committee member and underage manager Seamus Cavanagh passed away at their homes in Dungannon Street and Redford Park respectively. Nina Murphy became the latest Moy ladies footballer to make her county senior debut when she started for Tyrone in the big National League Division One clash against Armagh. She was soon back in the limelight again when achieving All-Ireland glory with the all- conquering University of Ulster, Jordanstown team. Nina and her fellow students completed a clean sweep of college honours when adding the O’Connor Cup to the Freshers Sevens, All- Ireland League and Dowd Cup they had already won this season. April Moy minor lads got their season off to the best possible start with a stunning seven point victory at home to Stewartstown in the league. They then dropped their first points of the season when falling at home to Aghaloo before bouncing back with a tremendous three point victory away to Galbally and hard earned draw away to Brocagh. Our minor ladies produced an heroic display at Pairc Thír na nÓg to record their first league win of the season against Stewartstown. The Tír na nÓg girls also turned on the style against the same opposition less than a week later to advance to the semi-finals of the championship. Unfortunately, Moy’s brave bid to reach the minor championship decider ended in disappointment when Edendork proved too strong at Pairc Eadain na dTorc. Club members were saddened to learn of the death of Mrs Rose Daly, mother of our esteemed Club Secretary and lifetime honorary member Mary. It was a disappointing start to the Division Two All-County League for Moy reserves as they lost away to Greencastle on a scoreline of 2-4 to 2-13. They also ended up on the losing side at home to Killeeshil before edging out Moortown at the loughshore to record their first win. Moy’s Under 14 Championship hopes were brought to an end with a dramatic extra-time defeat to near neighbours Eglish. They were also in league action, losing at home to a much bigger Stewartstown team and then savouring their first competitive victory of the season away to Ardboe. Meanwhile, Pairc Thír na nÓg was the venue for some exciting Grade Two action in the Tir Eoghain Feile Peile Na nOg as Moy’s Under 14 players made it through to the Group Four Final following victories over Aghaloo and Killeeshil in Section A. As part of our ongoing Centenary celebrations, An Mhaigh G.A.C. hosted a night of music, song and dance in Moy Parochial Hall. Giving great performances at this special Irish Cultural Concert were: Collegeland Youth Band; Omagh St Enda’s Solo Singer Caoilin McEnhill; Moy Set Dancers; Brantry C.C.E. Instrumental Group; Terence Conlon (Recitation); Eglish G.A.C. Novelty Act; Collegeland Dancers; An Port Mor C.C.E. Instrumental Group; The Moy Inn’s Instrumental Group; and Omagh St. Enda’s Ceili Dance Group. Moy senior footballers did not get off to the start they had hoped for in Division Two of the Tyrone All-County League when losing at home to Killeeshil by two points, but got off the mark thanks to a much improved display away to previously unbeaten Moortown. An Mhaigh player Colm Cavanagh won a Sigerson Cup medal when helping University of Ulster, Jordanstown defeat Garda College in the final of the prestigious All-Ireland Senior Colleges Competition at Carlow. An understrength Moy Girls Under 14 team travelled to Coalisland for their first league match of the season and lost out in a decent game of football. Moy ladies footballers Rionach Laverty, Maeve McKearney, Frances Bigley and Leona Gallagher all turned in five star displays for the Tyrone camogie team in the Ulster Final victory over Monaghan at An Port Mór. May Moy senior footballers suffered a further setback in their quest for league honours when losing away to last season’s All-Ireland Junior finalists Rock in a contentious contest, but fared much better away to Greencastle when winning by four points. It took a terrific performance by the Moy men to defeat high-flying Pomeroy at home, before the long trip to Urney saw the Tír na nÓgs come away with two more crucial league points. The month ended with our seniors staging a stunning second half comeback to squeeze the narrowest of victories over an in-form Stewartstown side in Division Two. An Mhaigh reserves also shot up the Division 2 table with slender victories against Rock (away), Pomeroy (home) and Urney (away) to leap into third place in the table.
