Edited & written by Kesaharu Imai. P2 As we make the transition into the twenty-first century, the Omega Speedmaster, small enough to fit in the palm of the hand, is in itself a time capsule of the twentieth century. P3 Foreword, The setting sun on a late autumn afternoon set scene for a visit from Mr Imai when he came to my office at the Van Nuys airport located in a suburb of Los Angeles. The creaking of the ffont stair5, as he entered the building, was reminicient of the erie awakening cry of a space craft preparing for laumch. I began my first Space Flight aboard Mercury-Atlas 9 thirty-three years ago! In looking back to those days, Mr Imai and I talked enthusiastically about the Omega Speedmaster, which served as a reliable personal tool throughout my mission duration completing 22 5 orbits around the earth! An impression of the universe was beyond my expectation and imagination. As a glimpse of limitdessness followed by an awe-inspiring view of the eatth are indeed indescribable. Being overwhelmed by an unprecedented experience I was not myself for some time till I noted the positive movement of ht e second hand on the Speedmaster, which in fact recorded such data as elapsed flight time and fuel consumption. "The development of science and technology today is undoubtedly the result of human wisdom which I believe stemmed from the passionate but romantic pursuit of scientists and engineers, said Me Imai. -

An Analysis of Hegemonic Social Structures in "Friends"
"I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU" IF YOU ARE JUST LIKE ME: AN ANALYSIS OF HEGEMONIC SOCIAL STRUCTURES IN "FRIENDS" Lisa Marie Marshall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2007 Committee: Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor Audrey E. Ellenwood Graduate Faculty Representative James C. Foust Lynda Dee Dixon © 2007 Lisa Marshall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season. -

The Early History of Howdy Doody…Television's First
1 | P a g e The Early History Of Howdy Doody…Television’s First Hit For those not old enough to remember, “The Howdy Doody Show” was much more than just Buffalo Bob and Howdy Doody….it was the beginning of television as a brand new form of entertainment. It was radio with pictures and it was revolutionary. With a TV set and an antenna, suddenly the world could come to your living room. Although primitive by today’s standards, it was the hottest ticket on the planet, and Howdy Doody was the first hit show on television! Television’s second hit was also from NBC, and debuted 6 months after Howdy…it was “The Texaco Star Theater” with Milton Berle. They called Milton “Mr. Television,” because a lot of adults bought a set to see him. With a nation full of kids wanting to see Howdy though, you can rest assured; a lot of sets were bought to keep the children happy too. As is often the case with history, in its retelling, the waters get muddied and important facts become mangled. Before long, it’s hard to know if you are reading the truth or not. With that in mind, I have decided to retell the story of how it all started to the best of our ability, AND…I’m doing it with the help of one of America’s foremost authorities on Howdy Doody, Burt Dubrow. – Bobby Ellerbee / Eyes Of A Generation.com (Revised Dec. 28, 2016) http://www.eyesofageneration.com/ https://www.facebook.com/pages/Eyes-Of-A-Generationcom/189359747768249 This is a 1952 photo of Buffalo Bob Smith with Howdy, and on the right, Bob Keeshan taking off his Clarabell makeup. -
A Yiddish Guide to Jack Carter
A YIDDISH GUIDE TO JACK CARTER by Marjorie Gottlieb Wolfe Syosset, New York Comic, Jack Carter, passed away. His manic storytelling made him a comedy star in television’s infancy and helped sustain a show business career through eight decades. A spokesman, Jeff Sanderson, said the cause was respiratory failure. Although he fell short of the top tier of entertainers, he had countless appearances on talk shows and on comedy series. “nomen” (name) Jack Carter’s original surname was Chakrin. “tate-mame” (parents) Carter’s parents, Jewish immigrants from Russia, owned a candy store. He was born in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. “zukhn” (to search) “People spend their lives searching for their one true love, their other half. I found mine in college, dancing in a fraternity house driveway. Lucky for me, she found me right back.” (quote) “khasene” (marriage) Carter was married three times: To Joan Mann, to Paula Stewart (the ex-wife of Burt Bacharach), and to Roxanne Stone. The latter were married in 1971, divorced in 1977, and remarried in 1992. He leaves behind his wife, Roxanne, two sons, Michael and Chase, and grand- children, Jake and Ava. “milkhome” (war) Carter was drafted during W. W. II, when he toured with the cast of Irving Berlin’s show, “This is the Army.” “zikh” (himself) Carter starred with Elvis Presley in the 1964 film, “Viva Las Vegas.” He played himself; The Horizontal Lieutenant, The Extraordinary Seaman,” and “The Funny Farm.” California Carter lived in California since 1970. He says, “The produce stores are like Cartier’s. The tomatoes are real gems.” “tummler” (noisemaker) A list of Borscht-Belt tummlers who made it to the big time includes Danny Kaye, Jan Pierce, Jan Murray, Tony Curtis, Jerry Lewis, Red Buttons, Phil Silvers, Moss Hart, Jack Albertson, Joey Adams, Phil Foster, and JACK CARTER. -

Copies of working papers are available from the author. Rethinking the Role of History in Law & Economics: The Case of the Federal Radio Commission in 1927 David A. Moss Jonathan B. Lackow July 13, 2008 Abstract In the study of law and economics, there is a danger that historical inferences from theory may infect historical tests of theory. It is imperative, therefore, that historical tests always involve a vigorous search not only for confirming evidence, but for disconfirming evidence as well. We undertake such a search in the context of a single well-known case: the Federal Radio Commission’s (FRC’s) 1927 decision not to expand the broadcast radio band. The standard account of this decision holds that incumbent broadcasters opposed expansion (to avoid increased competition) and succeeded in capturing the FRC. Although successful broadcaster opposition may be taken as confirming evidence for this interpretation, our review of the record reveals even stronger disconfirming evidence. In particular, we find that every major interest group, not just radio broadcasters, publicly opposed expansion of the band in 1927, and that broadcasters themselves were divided at the FRC’s hearings. 1. Introduction What is the role of history in the study of law and economics? Perhaps its most important role in this context is as a test of theory and a source of new hypotheses.
