Its primary audience is theological students and pastors, though scholars read it as well. It was formerly a print journal operated by RTSF/UCCF in the UK, and it became a digital journal operated by The Gospel Coalition in 2008. The new editorial team seeks to preserve representation, in both essayists and reviewers, from both sides of the Atlantic. Themelios is published three times a year exclusively online at www.theGospelCoalition.org. It is presented in two formats: PDF (for citing pagination) and HTML (for greater accessibility, usability, and infiltration in search engines). Themelios is copyrighted by The Gospel Coalition.   • Proposal from the Study Group on Theological Education
    Grace Presbytery Policy on Theological Education Adopted by Grace Presbytery on April 20, 2013 Persons who are considering beginning the inquiry process and their sessions are encouraged to contact the Committee on Preparation for Ministry as soon as possible so that policies can be fully articulated and understood early in the process. Ordination is an action of the wider church, and the decision of seminary is an important part of the process. To allow complete preparation and readiness to serve as a Teaching Elder, we encourage persons considering the process of coming under care to work in consultation with their home churches, their pastor, their session, and the Committee on Preparation for Ministry when deciding where to attend seminary. The Committee on Preparation for Ministry will walk with inquirers to assist in tailoring their education so that they fully explore their calling and receive the preparation required to serve that call. We are here to support inquirers and candidates in discerning and preparing for their paths of service. The following shall be components of the seminary education for all persons under care in Grace Presbytery who are seeking ordination as Teaching Elders: Master of Divinity degree, or its equivalent, including the following: PCUSA Polity Systematic theology including intentional study of reformed theology and theologians A course in Worship and the Sacraments All other specific education requirements as listed in the Book of Order: G- 2.0607c: “A transcript from a theological institution accredited by the Association of Theological Schools acceptable to the presbytery, showing a course of study including Hebrew and Greek, exegesis of Old and New Testaments using Hebrew and Greek, satisfactory grades in all areas of study, and graduation or proximity to graduation.” Preference is given to PCUSA schools and to those with PCUSA programs of study, led by PCUSA Teaching Elders.

    The most important thing in Al’s life was his friendship with Christ. If you ever got into a conversation with him about what really mattered, he would point not to honors or degrees or accomplishments, but to the depth of a person’s friendship with Christ. Al loved the Lord, and he wanted to do only what was pleasing to him. He also loved people, and he did his best to share with them the one thing that really mattered in life: the love of God. In his work as a scholar and teacher, Al had that remarkable ability of integrating his love for learning with his desire for God and his concern for others. He was loving husband, father, pastor, elder, and friend to so many people. He was also a groundbreaking Old Testament scholar, researcher, and teacher, with a deep love for God’s Word and a desire to share that life-giving Word with his colleagues and students. I am sure that Al would be deeply touched by this collection of essays written in his honor. He would be especially moved, I believe, not so much by the high quality of the contributions (as evidenced throughout), but by the deep bonds of friendship that inspired his colleagues and former students to honor him in this way. My friendship with Al goes back to 1971 when we entered Dartmouth College together as freshmen. I remember him then and think of him now as someone who always counted his blessings, and who generously shared his many gifts and talents with others.

The church fathers helped blaze the trail of tradition we now follow. As we look back in gratitude, we should also consider what we can build upon the foundation others have laid. We should look for insights that can be gathered and what actions we should take based on what the church fathers helped establish by God's grace. I argue that Basil's use of rhetoric is to draw us in as participants to the life of Christ by describing settings people are familiar with. Basil's abundant and effective use of metaphors and rhetoric provide us an inspiration and guide to follow today. St. Basil helps pastors uncover the value of rhetoric in ministry, for both moral exhortation and praise.1 Through his use of rhetorical techniques such as vivid metaphors, Basil invites us to stand with eyes wide in amazement at our God through the marvel of creation. Before we launch out onto our journey we should survey relevant history along with terms that will anchor us as landmarks. What we speak of as “rhetoric” can be defined as “the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.” 2 Rhetoric aims to persuade you. A rhetorician wants to so vividly describe a truth or event so that you can see it in your mind's eye.
