DECEMBER 7 American Legion remembers Pearl Harbor By Mike Steely [email protected] For many of us the attacks on 9/11 may be the most tragic event in our memory of U.S. history. The “Greatest Generation” has a second tragic date to remember, December 7. On December 7, 1941 at 7:55 a.m. Hawaiian time, the nation of Japan attacked and crippled our mili- tary in Pearl Harbor. This year, on Friday, December 7 at 12:55 p.m. in Knoxville, the American Legion Post 2 will hold a Remembrance Day Service at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery on Lyons View Pike. Knoxville Songwriters Association performs at last year’s Christmas concert at the Fountain City Library. Those experiences are so linked in a really beautiful and spooky and magical way I think. [0:00:22] (Intro Music: acoustic guitar folk song "Wild Eyes" by Mariee Sioux) Amber: Hello and welcome! I am Amber Magnolia Hill, and this is Medicine Stories, where we are exploring what it is to be human upon the earth through interviews that center on ancestry, herbalism, myth, mind, and magic. And sometimes we dive into motherhood, as well, as in today’s podcast with Alela Diane. And music! Myth, mind, motherhood, and music. Alela and I talk about: ● Her unique name, her feral childhood, and her deeply rooted familial musical inheritance ● The painful life experiences that led Alela to start making music ● Songs that come in dreams, or that contain premonitions or foreknowledge of the future ● And then we move into talking about motherhood and the intersection of motherhood and work and creativity ● We talk about touring as a mom (taking them with and leaving them home) ● Our experiences of weaning our two daughters; we both have two girls ● Alela tells the whole story of how she almost lost her life bringing her second daughter into the world, giving her second daughter her life ● And then we close with a little story about how she knew when her grandmother had passed.

  • The Other Side of the Monument: Memory, Preservation, and the Battles of Franklin and Nashville
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MONUMENT: MEMORY, PRESERVATION, AND THE BATTLES OF FRANKLIN AND NASHVILLE by JOE R. BAILEY B.S., Austin Peay State University, 2006 M.A., Austin Peay State University, 2008 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2015 Abstract The thriving areas of development around the cities of Franklin and Nashville in Tennessee bear little evidence of the large battles that took place there during November and December, 1864. Pointing to modern development to explain the failed preservation of those battlefields, however, radically oversimplifies how those battlefields became relatively obscure. Instead, the major factor contributing to the lack of preservation of the Franklin and Nashville battlefields was a fractured collective memory of the two events; there was no unified narrative of the battles. For an extended period after the war, there was little effort to remember the Tennessee Campaign. Local citizens and veterans of the battles simply wanted to forget the horrific battles that haunted their memories. Furthermore, the United States government was not interested in saving the battlefields at Franklin and Nashville. Federal authorities, including the War Department and Congress, had grown tired of funding battlefields as national parks and could not be convinced that the two battlefields were worthy of preservation. Moreover, Southerners and Northerners remembered Franklin and Nashville in different ways, and historians mainly stressed Eastern Theater battles, failing to assign much significance to Franklin and Nashville. Throughout the 20th century, infrastructure development encroached on the battlefields and they continued to fade from public memory.

TennCare is Tennessee’s Medicaid managed care demonstration program. Beginning in 1994, this comprehensive health reform program has used the Medicaid program to both expand services to the Medicaid population and insurance coverage to individuals who are determined to be uninsured or uninsurable using a system of Managed Care Organizations (MCOs). The program is managed by the Bureau of TennCare under the direction of a Deputy Commissioner of Health (http://www.state.tn.us/tenncare/).
