ACADEMIC HONORS CONVOCATION 2020 Recognizing the Academic Achievements and Honors of Otterbein Students APRIL 22, 2020 Remarks These are extraordinary times we have faced this semester. We didn’t imagine this reality that we’re in now — working and studying from home as, collectively, we fight a virus that has touched every country, every family, and every life in some way. Yet, what you’ve accomplished in adapting and adjusting to these realities is real — and it matters to all of us. We didn’t imagine giving out awards in this way. While it makes me feel pride in the creativity and commitment to ensure scholarly recognition continues — I want you to know that, just like you, I ache for what we are missing. We miss the energy and shared experience of being in Cowan together. We miss the celebratory pomp and circumstance. We miss an event where your inner polish and pride shines even brighter than the professional attire you usually wear for special occasions like these. As an educator, I have a responsibility and habit of looking to the lesson in any teachable moment — no matter how disconcerting or disappointing. There is one possible truth to consider in this virtual reality and global pandemic that is keeping us apart from one another: some of your biggest discoveries are yet to come. Whether a brilliant turn of phrase in creative work, a scientific finding that is the key to proving your hunch, a transformative performance in a rehearsal, a fresh and creative lesson plan, or a life-saving procedure performed on a patient — those moments will happen in your own space with no audience and no applause. But you’ll know it and you’ll recognize the singular power and beauty of what you’ve achieved. Trust me, it will be no less important, no less worthy of celebration and no less remarkable as the honors we recognize today. That internal recognition, that pride of self, is some of the best motivation there is. It’s the kind of reward most of us crave. While we’re apart and we grieve what we can’t share, I’ll remind myself that what you’re experiencing now is training for the bigger moments to come. We are just as proud of you now as we will be then. — Dr. Wendy Sherman Heckler Provost and Senior Vice President Black River Special music for presentation of award winners.
