FAMILY STORIES: HANDLE WITH CARE, ESPECIALLY THE MOST DRAMATIC ONES WILLIAM G. HARTLEY Rare is the family story that does not get “better” as retold over time. A few families have in them characters who like to tell tall tales, or at least embellish information they relate about their parents or grandparents. Most often, however, misinformation gains currency unintentionally. People assume they have the story right, but in fact they misunderstood minor and sometimes major details. We need to record and treasure family stories that come to us, even though most are wheat with chaff. Folklorist Bert Wilson has shown us that repeatedly told family stories, be they true or false, convey a truth about what the family values. He suggests we ask why that story matters so much to the family that it continues to be told.1 But, as history students are taught early, we need to keep an attitude of skepticism about how accurate our sources of historical information are. -

CONCLUSION: THE LAST LAUGH . 84 BIBLIOGRAPHY . 92 ii CHAPTER 1 “A BURLESQUE ON THE BIBLE” Sometime in late August or early September, 1831, Robert Dale Owen, son of the Scottish utopian reformer Robert Owen, received a letter from his brother William, who had hurriedly written from an Erie Canal boat somewhere near Syracuse, New York. Just as hastily Robert published the correspondence in his New York City newspaper, the Free Enquirer, not knowing that he would receive another, longer letter from William within days, just in time to be included in his weekly’s next run. What proved to be so pressing was what William had discovered onboard the canal boat: “I have met,” he announced dramatically, “with the famous ‘Book of Mormon.’”1 Published in 1830, the Book of Mormon claimed to be nothing short of scripture, an account of America’s ancient inhabitants (themselves a scattered Hebrew remnant) and God’s dealings with them over a long and bloody history. -

On Being Adopted: Julia Murdock Smith Sunny McClellan Morton JULIA MURDOCK SMITH WAS ONE OF THE INFANT TWINS adopted by Joseph and Emma Smith. She was raised as the oldest child in the Smith household. In re- cent years, biographers have claimed Julia as primary subject material, and her fascinating character and life have begun to take shape. However, in some ways Julia remains an enigma, even to devotees of the prophet and his family—as if even after her death, she has been touched by the same disconnectedness that in- fluenced her relationships and sense of self during her life. She was adopted: not quite a Smith, not quite a Murdock, and to historians of Mormonism, not quite a Mormon. In this paper, I examine the ways adoption may have shaped Julia's life, drawing on modern psychological literature that characterizes the experiences of those who have been adopted. I ground my approach in the theory that the human response to being given away by one's birthparents transcends genera- tional effects.1 In other words, Julia's feelings about being adopted shouldn't dif- fer significantly from those of modern adoptees. I will first provide biographical information on Julia. A description of nineteenth-century adoption practices and modern closed adoptions will follow, with comments on their relevance to Julia's experiences. These materials will provide context for an exploration of Julia's relationships with her adoptive and biological families and a discussion 1. Ezra Thayre He was born on October 14, 1791, at Randolph, Vermont He was a builder of bridges, dams, and mills in Palmyra He was converted through the teaching of Hyrum Smith and baptized by Parley P. Pratt in October 1830 Along with Northrop Sweet, he was called on a mission and many joined the church through his services He was ordained a high priest in June 1831 but failed to heed the Lord’s direction to go on another mission (D&C 52:22) He was called to repentance Ezra was called and obeyed another mission call (D&C 75:31) He participated in Zion’s Camp and later served on high council in Adam-ondi-Ahman, Missouri He eventually moved to Rochester, NY and then Michigan After the Prophets death he became a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in August 1860 Who’s Who Northrop Sweet He was born in 1802 in Cambridge, New York He was baptized by Parley P. Pratt in October 1830 and ordained an Elder the following June He was called with Ezra Thayre on a mission He soon fell away from the church (claiming that Joseph Smith was a false prophet) and formed a church of his own in Kirtland (Pure Church of Christ) He married Elathan (Elethan) Harris before 1828, second wife, Clorinda Mecham (1855) then third wife Eunice Hammer(1861) and had 10 children When his church failed to prosper, he moved to Ohio and then later to Michigan He was appointed justice of peace in Batavia, Michigan in 1859-1863 then moved to Bethal, Branch Co.
