47 Recipients of Honorary Degrees HENRY ARMFIELD FOSCUE Civic leader, loyal friend of education, and an eminently successful businessman, HENRY ARMFIELD FOSCUE has for many years made significant to the economy and industry of his native State. Realizing that whencontributions“you invest in young men and young women, you have purchased immortality,” he has given his support unstintedly to the three branches of the University—from which four generations of his family have graduated—by serving as a member of the Board of Trustees and on important committees and foundations. Through his personal charm and unflagging dedication, he has helped to implement new and dynamic programs in the University system, which are now providing qualified graduates to assume positions of leadership in all phases of the furniture industry. Among his many business enterprises, he is President of the Globe Furniture Company, where he has set high standards of design and aesthetic values that provide exam- ples for the industry throughout the South. As President and Chairman of the Board of the Southern Furniture Exposition Building, he directs the largest and most influential furniture market in the world. His leadership and his example have helped make North Carolina the heart of the furniture industry of the entire nation. North Carolina State is proud to add to his honors by awarding him the degree of Doctor of Humanities. WILLIAM DALLAS HERRING WILLIAM DALLAS HERRING is a unique man; although he is single, he is, in a sense, the father of thousands of Tar Heel youths, because he has made himself the guardian of their intellects. As an accomplished and persuasive speaker, as an advisor to governors, as the Chairman of the State Board of Education. in a quiet and unassuming way he has exerted a powerful influence in raising the standards of education in our State. His dedication to quality, however, has not obscured for him the broad and markedly American aims of a system of public education. Possessed with the zeal to see that an education is available to every citizen, no matter what his race or economic level, he has been the mainspring in planning policy and in supplying the motivation for pioneering new horizons in education. Notably, he envisioned the need for and has led to the development of a system of community colleges and technical institutes. The twenty industrial education centers now functioning in our State are the realization of his dream and a fitting memorial to his initiative and foresight. North Carolina State is pleased to add to his honors by bestowing upon this selfless and dedicated man the degree of Doctor of Humanities. LOUIS ISADORE KAHN Master architect, master teacher, Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters, LOUIS ISADORE KAHN represents a classic pattern of American success. Born on the Island of 0501 in Russia and educated in America, he early became an American citizen, and through long years of devotion to his art and by always striving for excellence, he has achieved a position of preeminence among modern architects. Today he is known throughout the world as one of the giants of architecture, symbolizing and conscience of his profession. With headquarters in Philadelphia, hethehasidealismbuilt an international reputation with such works as the Second Capitol of Pakistan, a new school in India, and the Salk Institute in California. As director of the graduate program in architecture at Yale University and later at_ the Uni- versity of Pennsylvania, he has communicated the 1ntensxty and integrity of hls 48 work to thousands of students, for he has never become too busy to teach, bringing so clearly in his art. Asideto thefromclassroomhis personalthe samegeniussensein ofhisdedicationown creativemanifestedactivities, Mr. Kahn’s influence is great because it represents a mode of thinking and an approach to life, rather thanOursaniseasilynot animitatedage notedstyle.for its beauty; therefore, it is a rare privilege to award the degree of Doctor of Humanities to one who has added beauty and grace so abundantly to the face of America and of the world. LILLIAN PARKER WALLACE Teacher, scholar, artist, and community leader, LILLIAN PARKER WALLACE has for more than forty years stimulated the intellectual life of North Carolina. Historians, educators, and students of over ten college generations testify to her influence during her years as teacher and Head of the Department of History at Meredith College. At North Carolina State she has been instructor and supervisor of summer school programs in art, music, and journalism, and, throughout the State of North Carolina, a leader in the improvement of public schools and higher education. Her inspiration has raised the aspirations of thousands of Tar Heel youths. Wise, witty, and indomitably courageous, she has excited the intel- lectual curiosity of her students, counseled them, and encouraged their aesthetic interests, yet still found time for her own scholarly and artistic pursuits, ranging from papal history to japanese calligraphy. As skilled organist and pianist and promoter of musical activities, she has spread a harmony in the community which as intellectual impetus she has constantly enlightened. An authority on the past, whose books are read and respected in Europe and America, she is deeply involved in the present and looks every day to the future. North Carolina State is pleased to honor her with the degree of Doctor of Humanities. DAVID STATHEM WEAVER Scientist, administrator, noted teacher, amateur artist, canine expert, and father of three North Carolina State graduates, DAVID STATHEM WEAVER is a very special person among modern men. Although not a native Tar Heel, he has de- voted a long life of service to the progress of North Carolina State College and the State of North Carolina, assuming as his goals the conservation of our re- sources, the social and economic well-being of our rural citizens, and the relief of human drudgery. His more than forty years of commitment have been well invested, for few men have contributed more to raising the living standards and to changing the cultural patterns of our State. As Chairman of the North Caro- lina Soil and Water Conservation Committee, he was the leader in the develop~ ment of our conservation program. As Secretary of the North Carolina Rural Electrification Authority, he played a significant role in the taken place in our rural life and agricultural production. As Headrevolutionof thethatDepart-has ment of Agricultural Engineering at North Carolina State, he led and helped train the leaders who guided the shift on North Carolina farms from the mule to the machine. Finally as Director of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service, he helped effect the transformation of farming to a business based on scientific principles. The power lines of rural North Carolina have been called a monument to his brilliant leadership and organizational abilities. We take pride in adding to his Doctor of Humanities upon one who manyadded honorsboth lightby andbestowingenlightenmentthe degreeto hisof adopted State.
