Newsletter Winter 2016/2017 Volume 1 Issue 2 BLACK CATHOLIC HISTORY MONTH DAY OF REFLECTION By Deacon Al Anderson On Saturday, November 19, 2016, the Black Catholic Ministries for the Diocese of Arlington’s Office of Multicultural Ministries presented a DAY OF REFLECTION at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Vienna, VA. The day was focused on National Black Catholic Congress XI’s, Principle IX: GETTING MARRIED & STAYING MARRIED The day began with a prayer service which included, as the opening prayer, Prayer for Peace in Our Communities by Therese Wilson-Favors: O Lord our God, in your mercy and kindness, no thought of ours is left unnoticed, no desire or concern ignored. You have proven that blessings abound when we fall on our knees in prayer, and so we turn to you in our hour of need. Surrounded by violence and cries for justice, we hear your voice telling us what is required . “Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God” (Mi 6:8). Fill us with your mercy so that we, in turn, may be merciful to others. Strip away pride, suspicion, and racism so that we may seek peace and justice in our communities. Strengthen our hearts so that they beat only to the rhythm of your holy will. Flood our path with your light as we walk humbly toward a future filled with encounter and unity. Be with us, O Lord, in our efforts, for only by the prompting of your grace can we progress toward virtue.

Archbishop Wilton Gregory, to become the first Black prelate from the United States to earn the coveted red cap. Our brother was picked by Pope Francis to lead the archdiocese in the U.S. capital last year. Archbishop Gregory is a long-time member of the Knights of Peter Claver who has been an ardent supporter of our causes over the years. We are particularly proud of the leadership has provided to the American Catholic Church on issues of race and the dignity of human life. Most recently, he announced the Archdiocese of Washington's new initiative, “Made in God’s Image: Pray and Work to End the Sin of Racism,” which will promote pastoral activities and outreach including prayer, listening sessions, faith formation opportunities and social justice work. We congratulate our brother on this significant milestone on his pastoral journey and for the church at large. THE KNIGHTS OF PETER CLAVER & LADIES AUXILIARY Spreading FAITH, HOPE, and LOVE through Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity ABOUT US The Knights of Peter Claver Inc. (KPC) was founded by 4 Josephite priests and 3 laymen on November 7, 1909 with the purpose of providing significant opportunities for Catholic Action to African-American men. The organization later established a Ladies Auxiliary (KPCLA) and Junior Divisions to provide the same opportunities for Catholic Action to the entire family. Over 110 years later, the Knights of Peter Claver, Inc. is the oldest and largest historically, African-American Catholic lay organization with over 17,300 members in 6 geographical areas. ST. PETER CLAVER A Spanish, Jesuit priest and missionary born in Verdú (Catalonia) who, due to his life and work, became the Patron Saint of Slaves, the Republic of Colombia, South America and Ministry to African- Americans. During the 40 years of his ministry in Colombia, it is estimated he baptized nearly 300,000 slaves into Christianity. Peter Claver is considered a heroic example of what should be the Christian praxis of love and of the exercise of human rights. There is no explanation to justify the actions taken by the police that ultimately led to Mr. Floyd’s demise. We pray that God will grant his family peace and that the Minneapolis community finds healing during this difficult period. George Floyd. George Floyd. George Floyd. George Floyd was a man, a human, a being. Not a stat. Not just another one. Not to be forgotten. The Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary echoes the outrage and demands not just for justice, but for true respect of the Dignity of Black Lives. These statements should not have to be made. These demands should not have to be made. These lives should not be lost. • We call on all who are sworn “to protect and to serve” - to carry out the that very motto. • We call on all leaders elected to serve - to listen, to act, to legislate. • We call on all of God’s children created to love – to do just that – love.
