CATHOLICS CANNOT BE FREEMASONS. Pastor’s Message June 9 Occasionally, I come across an obituary that describes the deceased as a lifelong, faithful Catholic who was involved in the church. They may have even taught catechism or been a lector, etc. The times of services are listed. Usually there is a rosary, a Funeral Mass, a Christian burial and then comes the kicker…followed by Masonic funeral rites. Many Catholics, even faithful Catholics, seem to be unaware that Catholicism and Freemasonry are incompatible. Many of those Catholics who join lodges would probably have never done so if they had known that it was prohibited. The blame for that ignorance, I believe, falls mostly with us clergy for failing to educate our flocks. The history of Freemasonry is long and complicated and made more complicated by the fact that it is a secret society. To quote the New Advent Encyclopedia, “all Masonry is full of ambiguity”. Many Catholics who join them think that they are joining a harmless fraternal organization much like the Knights of Columbus or Knights of Peter Claver. Some Freemason lodges probably do see themselves in that way. However, the oaths that are taken by members are clearly incompatible with Christianity and belief in the Most Holy Trinity. From 1738-1983, nine Popes have condemned Freemasonry and prohibited Catholics from involvement with it. Clement XII, Benedict XIV, Pius VII, Leo XII, Pius VIII, Gregory XVI, Pius IX, Leo XIII, and St. John Paul II. For many years, under Church Law, Catholics who joined FreeMasonry were automatically excommunicated. The revised 1983 Code of Canon Law does not mention Freemasonry or any other society by name but says, “A person who joins an association which plots against the Church is to be punished with a just penalty” (Canon 1374). Many took this to mean that Freemasonry was no longer prohibited for Catholics. In 1983, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, with the approval of Pope St. John Paul II, published a clarification which states: “the Church’s negative judgment in regard to Masonic association remains unchanged since their principles have always been considered irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church and therefore membership in them remains forbidden. The faithful who enroll in Masonic associations are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion.” If you had been involved with Freemasonry and can honestly say that you were unaware of this, then let your mind be at ease. For something to be a mortal sin you must know that it is a mortal sin. However, it would be best, now that you do know to politely back out of the organization. If you did know that it was a mortal sin and still chose to associate with the organization, then as your spiritual father, I encourage you, for the sake of your immortal soul, to repent and seek God’s amazing mercy in the Sacrament of Penance. .

  • KPC Social Justice Resource Book!
THE KNIGHTS OF PETER CLAVER and THE KNIGHTS OF PETER CLAVER, LADIES AUXILIARY National Social Justice Initiatives RESOURCE BOOK Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary Official Statement on the Murder of - GEORGE FLOYD – The Knights of Peter Claver condemns the senseless death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis policemen. There is no explanation to justify the actions taken by the police that ultimately led to Mr. Floyd’s demise. We pray that God will grant his family peace and that the Minneapolis community finds healing during this difficult period. George Floyd. George Floyd. George Floyd. George Floyd was a man, a human, a being. Not a stat. Not just another one. Not to be forgotten. The Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary echoes the outrage and demands not just for justice, but for true respect of the Dignity of Black Lives. These statements should not have to be made. These demands should not have to be made. These lives should not be lost. • We call on all who are sworn “to protect and to serve” - to carry out the that very motto. • We call on all leaders elected to serve - to listen, to act, to legislate. • We call on all of God’s children created to love – to do just that – love. The anger, emotions, and outrage must be followed by effective solutions that do more than just penalize murderous actions, but eliminate future ones. The ink has run dry on writing statements, and it is now time to write laws, to write policies, to write sentences.
