INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC CONSERVATORY: COMMERCIAL MUSIC PROGRAM Interview-Audition Placement Activity Requirements

Popular Music Conservatory (9th – 12th Only) The Popular Music Conservatory interview-audition placement activity is a two-round process. All applicants must submit a completed application for the Popular Music Conservatory and a YouTube video submission. Please note that not all applicants will be invited to the second round interview-audition placement activity.

I. Round One: Application and Video Submission Please complete the Round-one requirements below:

YouTube Video Composition: • Please name your YouTube video as follows: (Your full name) – 2020 Popular Music Interview-Audition Placement Activity • At the beginning of your video, please clearly state your name, current age, and what grade you will be applying to. Be sure to indicate if you are an OCSA student, and, if so, what conservatory you are currently in. • Videos should have good lighting, show at least ¾ of the student’s body, and have no disruptive background noise. • To protect your privacy, your YouTube video should be set as “UNLISTED” so it cannot be publicly viewed. • Copy and paste your YouTube video URL directly into your Popular Music Conservatory application. • Once your YouTube video and application have been submitted to OCSA, the submission is final and changes cannot be made. After the application submission is verified “complete,” video links will be submitted to the Director of Popular Music for review. All applicants will be notified when their application status changes. • Failure to follow these instructions may result in delay of processing your application.

Round-One YouTube Video Requirements: I. Vocalists: Please prepare a piece of your choice in its entirety and perform with a backing track. Students may also accompany themselves on guitar or . Do not sing a cappella.

II. Guitarists: Please prepare one of the guitar solos and one of the rhythmic guitar selections listed in the “Onsite Interview-Audition Placement Activity Requirements” below. Please perform with the original recorded track.

III. Keyboardists: Please prepare one of the keyboard /organ solos listed on the “Onsite Interview-Audition Placement Activity Requirements” below. Please perform with the original recorded track.

IV. Bassists: Please prepare one of the song selections listed in the “Onsite Interview-Audition Requirements” below. Please perform with the original recorded track.

V. Drummers: Please prepare one of the song selections listed in the “Onsite interview-Audition Placement Activity Requirements” below. Please perform with the original recorded track.

II. Second Round: Onsite Interview-Audition Placement Activity instructions: Qualified applicants, invited to participate in the second round interview-audition placement activity, must arrive wearing proper semi-formal interview-audition attire: • Slacks, button-up shirts, dresses, skirt/top, etc. • No jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes, or flip-flops

Materials needed: 1. Please bring a current, wallet-sized photo to the interview-audition placement activity – one that will help us remember you. 2. Please provide accompaniment/backing track for your selections on a USB drive or an iPod/iPad/Smartphone. Vocalists will need karaoke tracks in their preferred keys and instrumentalists may perform with the original recorded tracks. Anyone bringing an iPhone must bring his/her own dongle (if needed) to connect to our sound system. Tracks streaming from YouTube and/or Spotify will not be accepted. 3. The program will provide a drum set, a sound system with microphone, an 88-key Roland keyboard with Roland amp, a bass amp, and a guitar amp with a pedal board. • Drummers must provide their own drumsticks • Guitarists and bassists must bring their own instruments

4. All applicants must enter the interview-audition placement activity with their instrument tuned and warmed up.

During the second-round onsite interview-audition placement activity all applicants will be assessed by: 1. A short interview 2. A sight-reading exercise (all vocalists and instrumentalists) 3. Performing in various grooves: swing, reggae, rock, and shuffle (All instrumentalists); Knowledge of Scales (Guitarists, Bassists and Keyboardists Only; all Major and natural, harmonic, and melodic minor scales); Rudiments (Drummers Only); Tonal Memory (Vocalists Only); 4. The following performance requirements -

A) Vocalists: Performance of two selections: 1. The applicant will perform one song from the preselected list below. Applicants must provide accompaniment/karaoke track in preferred key. Students may also accompany themselves on piano or guitar.
