Stika. More than a thousand people will be in attendance for this historic celebration and Rite of Dedication, including leaders of the Catholic Church representing the Vatican, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and more than a dozen archdioceses, dioceses, and Catholic communities as well as faithful from the Diocese of Knoxville’s 51 parishes and Catholic missions. The Mass marks the official opening of the Diocese of Knoxville’s first dedicated cathedral, located at 711 S. Northshore Drive in Knoxville. It will replace the current Sacred Heart Cathedral, built in 1955 and opened in 1956. Sacred Heart served as a parish church from Jan. 1, 1956, until Pope St. John Paul II established the Diocese of Knoxville in 1988 and then elevated Sacred Heart to a cathedral. The old cathedral building will be converted into a parish fellowship hall. They honestly talked with one another and shared their worries, questions, hope, and faith. They met a stranger on the way. They extended hospitality. They listened intently as the stranger offered helpful information. They eventually recognized the stranger as Jesus hopes when they broke bread together. And then they noticed that their hearts were on fire. In a large parish like ours, we need to know that we can connect with good folks with whom we can honestly talk. We need to give and receive the blessing of hospitality and we are encouraged by companions who have also come to know the Lord in the Breaking of the Bread.     Bishop John Stowe Bishop John Stowe, a Conventual Franciscan Friar, has been the Bishop of Lexington in Kentucky since 2015. He did his studies of philosophy and history at Saint Louis University and theology at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley where he first became involved in Pax Christi. The first fifteen years of his priesthood were spent on the US-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas. He was the pastor of the oldest church in Texas and eventually served as the Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia in El Paso. In 2010 he was elected Vicar Provincial of the Conventual Franciscan Province of Our Lady of Consolation and at the same time became Rector of the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio until the time he was named a bishop by Pope Francis. He currently is the Episcopal Adviser to the Catholic Committee of Appalachia and the Bishop President of Pax Christi USA. Johnny Zokovitch Johnny Zokovitch is the Executive Director of Pax Christi USA, the national Catholic peace and justice movement. Previously, Johnny served as senior staff at Pax Christi International in Brussels, promoting human rights and the promise of nonviolence in addressing conflict. For nearly 15 years, he lived at and co-directed the Gainesville (FL) Catholic Worker House, an intentional community serving and living with people who are homeless, addicted, impoverished, or mentally ill.     Father John Stowe, OFM Conv. Father John Stowe was born 15 April 1966 to John R and Lucy Satelli Stowe of Lorain, Ohio. He attended grade school at Saint Anthony of Padua Parish staffed by the Conventual Franciscans and Lorain Catholic High School. After a year of community college, Fr John joined the formation program for the Conventual Franciscan Province of Our Lady of Consolation at Saint Bonaventure Friary in St. Louis, Missouri. During the time of his candidacy he began studies in Philosophy and History at Saint Louis University and completed B.A.s in each in 1990 after an interruption for novitiate. In 1992 he professed solemn vows in the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. Father John earned a Masters of Divinity and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology in the field of Church History from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley (now affiliated with Santa Clara University). He served as a transitional deacon at Saint David of Wales Parish in Richmond, California and completed his diaconate at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in El Paso, Texas. In 1995 he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop A. James Quinn at his home parish of Saint Anthony in Lorian. He was assigned to continue at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church as associate pastor. The parish is at the site of the Ysleta Mission, founded in 1682, and the oldest parish in Texas. It is on the U.S.- Mexico border and includes the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo of the Tigua tribe of Native Americans. Father John would continue as pastor of that parish.

The onset of the pandemic, followed by economic collapse, and the social and political upheaval of an election year—any of these would be remarkable on their own. Yet in all of this, we have adapted to find new ways of worshipping, socializing, working, sharing, and learning together. Yes, these adjustments were and continue to be stressful, but these are also times of grace, as we see faith and courage overcome desolation and fear. Perhaps that is why it’s no surprise that our schools across the Midwest rose swiftly to meet the challenges of COVID-19 (page 14), stepping up in the same way Jesuits have done since our founding. In Cincinnati, at Bellarmine Parish and Xavier University (page 20), the pandemic united the parish and university to work together in unique and innovative ways, as perhaps nothing else could have. At the same time, the Seminars in Ignatian Formation and Leadership (SIF) program (page 19) continued to offer training in the Spiritual Exercises to those serving at our Jesuit works. This vital program transitioned successfully to an online model, so that the ripple effect of this training continues.
