This disc is made up of three chamber works, all world-première recordings. Corp’s Third String Quartet is, unlike his earlier two quartets, not intended as programme music, and is simply beautiful music for its own sake. By complete contrast, the central piece is a setting of an adaptation of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper. A thrilling mini psychological drama, this powerful piece grips the listener as the angst of the protagonist is played out. The final piece is a clarinet quintet written in honour of the 19th-century polymath Joseph Crawhall. The committed performances on this disc communicate Corp’s every intention in the varying demands of these diverse compositions. The booklet contains full notes by the composer, as well as illustrating some wood engravings by Joseph Crawhall. This is a wonderful example of an English composer writing engaging, lyric, dramatic music, that will appeal to a wide audience. MUSIC FOR MY LOVE, VOLUME TWO by Martin Anderson Yodit Tekle was born in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, on 29 December 1977, and came to the United Kingdom as a refugee from the harsh internal policies of her native country. We were introduced by a mutual friend at a concert on 13 April 2008, and she stopped the breath in my throat – I hope you know the feeling when you frst see someone and know that’s where you have to be – and, but for a hiatus of a few months, we spent the rest of her short life together. In the autumn of 2014 Yodit was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Tat kind of news throws everything into perspective and so the frst thing I said to her when I went to see her in hospital was: ‘I hadn’t realised I loved you so much’. Quick as a fash, she answered: ‘So where’s the ring?’ I countered: ‘But what happens if we get married and you survive?’ We both laughed loudly – because neither of us thought for a minute that she really might die. Even so, on the bus home that evening I didn’t require much refection to understand what needed to be done, and as soon as I got in, I went online and bought a ring. We duly got engaged on Christmas Day, when Yodit was so full of life and happiness that even now, years later, it doesn’t seem possible that she had less than fve months to live.1 Tis project of 100+ new pieces for string orchestra had its origins in a Skype conversation with the composer Steve Elcock just afer that frst shocking diagnosis. -

The Life and Music of Rutland Boughton by Alan Senior ‘How beautiful they are, the lordly ones who dwell in the hollow hills’ – Fiona Macleod Rutland Boughton (1878–1960) (image courtesy of Boughton Music Trust) was born at Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England but much of his life would be centred on Glastonbury in Somerset. His conservative, puritanical father, who was a grocer, had very little money to spend on his son’s musical education, though the boy had shown remarkable musical gifts and was encouraged by his mother. 1892 found him apprenticed to Cecil Barth’s London concert agency, displaying a determination and confidence which often comes to those who are largely self-taught in music and composition. This agency work taught him the value of self-advertisement and he wrote many works at this time – mostly ‘potboilers’ like the ones written by Cyril Scott and John Foulds in their early careers. Boughton’s fortitude managed to attract both sympathy and enough interest for Charles Villiers Stanford, and Lady Battersea of the Rothschild family (who had gained a reputation as a social activist), to fund him for a brief spell at the Royal College of Music in 1900, where he studied under Stanford and Walford Davies but the academic restraint didn’t suit him and he left after a year when funds ran out, though he acknowledged the benefit gained from the two composers. Boughton never followed his family’s religious affiliations, stating that religion was generally ‘too narrow for a God’, which might have been echoed by others at the time. -

For the performer and listener it is an eighteen-minute cocktail of pomp, virtuosity, dignified solemnity, poise and playfulness: and its unique hybrid structure of five interlinked movements, combining Romantic gesture with classical form, makes it a rewarding subject for study. -
