The A Weekly Look at the Campus CChroniclehronicle volume XXXI, number 11, October 28, 2016

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,

Together, we dared to imagine an Inauguration that would encompass the entire Cottey community.

Together, we dared to imagine an opportunity to come together to honor the past and celebrate the future.

Together, we dared to imagine a brighter and bolder future and consider our individual commitment to make this future a reality.

All this and more, we dared to imagine at the Inauguration of Cottey’s 12th president Jann Rudd Weitzel. On a beautiful fall Saturday afternoon, almost five hundred individuals came together in the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts, along with hundreds who joined by live stream, to participate in this historic event. It was more than pomp and circumstance; it was the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Cottey College.

The planning for this week of celebration began more than nine months ago. It began with Dr. Weitzel’s vision for an Inauguration. It was a vision focused on celebrating Cottey - the accomplishments of our students; the talents of our present and past faculty and staff; and the volunteers who provide leadership on our boards. To that end, many, if not most, of you served on one of the work groups making sure every detail was addressed. As we can all attest, what looked flawless from the outside required planning, rehearsing and executing… and in some instances a little more rehearsing!

In the end, the Inauguration we imagined became real – tangible and palatable. As we think about Dr. Weitzel’s speech, we are challenged to do more than imagine the future; together we can create the future of Cottey College.

We invite you to visit www.cottey.edu/inauguration to view the videos of Capping, Processional, and Inauguration as well as photos from events throughout the week in the Photo Gallery.

With deep gratitude,

Friday & Saturday, November 4-5 8:00 p.m. Center for the Arts, Auditorium

Cottey's Department of Theatre will present Jen Silverman’s play The Moors, under the direction of Prof. Laura Chaney. The play is inspired by the Brontë sisters and Victorian Gothic, with a contemporary twist.

Two sisters and a dog live out their lives on the bleak English moors, and dream of love and power. The arrival of a hapless governess and a moor-hen set all three on a strange and dangerous path. The Moors is a dark comedy about love, desperation, and visibility.

Tickets are $5.00 for adults, and $4.00 for those under 18 or over 62. Cottey students and staff are free with Cottey I.D.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

On Tuesday, October 25, as part of celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Cottey collaborated with local and state agencies to hold a Regional Transition and Resource Expo for area adolescents and young adults (ages 14- 26) with disabilities. The Expo provided approximately 100-120 area students, parents, and professional educators with the chance to learn about resources, educational opportunities, and employment options for students with disabilities moving from their high school to post-secondary lives. In addition to serving on the event planning committee, Stephanie McGhee, coordinator of student disability services, academic advising, and student success programming, presented to students, professionals, and parents on accommodations after high school and the differences between high school and post-secondary education, answered participants’ questions about accommodations in higher education one-on-one, and staffed a resource table with information on federal laws related to disabilities, accommodations in higher education, and employment accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Cottey students Anita van Rooyen, Brittany Lear and Cottey alumna Reyna Blakely developed (in collaboration with Renee Hampton and Ms. McGhee) and presented humorous skits and a Q&A session demonstrating and discussing the dos and don’ts of interviewing. Cottey student leaders and high school girls from the KC metro area teamed up for an innovation competition at the Sprint Accelerator in Kansas City on Wednesday, October 26. Teams were mentored by women leaders and entrepreneurs for a day of collaboration and innovation to solve real business problems. This one day event was coordinated through the Cottey College Department of Marketing and Strategic Communication, and CEED, the Center of Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Development. Cottey student participation was financially supported through the Anderson Leadership Fund. For more photos from the day, visit the Center for Women's Leadership Facebook page. Human Resources

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

You likely have heard of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). An update to the FLSA was announced on May 18 that will impact some Cottey employees effective December 1, 2016. Cottey is not alone in the implementation of these new federal laws. All colleges, universities, and businesses will be addressing these FLSA requirements. As a practical matter, this means that some positions that have been historically classified as exempt will be reclassified as “non-exempt.” These non-exempt positions will now be eligible for overtime payments for hours worked over 40 in a work week, and these employees also will be required to track and record their work hours, as required by law.

As with any major change, employees may experience a level of uncertainty and anxiety. Please know that we are aware of this reality and working to make sure the transition is as smooth as possible. Without doubt there will be some burdensome internal changes, but the federal government’s passing of amendments to the FLSA requires such changes to be made.
