The A Weekly Look at the Cottey College Campus CChroniclehronicle volume XXXI, number 11, October 28, 2016 Dear Faculty, Staff and Students, Together, we dared to imagine an Inauguration that would encompass the entire Cottey community. Together, we dared to imagine an opportunity to come together to honor the past and celebrate the future. Together, we dared to imagine a brighter and bolder future and consider our individual commitment to make this future a reality. All this and more, we dared to imagine at the Inauguration of Cottey’s 12th president Jann Rudd Weitzel. On a beautiful fall Saturday afternoon, almost five hundred individuals came together in the Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts, along with hundreds who joined by live stream, to participate in this historic event. It was more than pomp and circumstance; it was the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Cottey College. The planning for this week of celebration began more than nine months ago. It began with Dr. Weitzel’s vision for an Inauguration. It was a vision focused on celebrating Cottey - the accomplishments of our students; the talents of our present and past faculty and staff; and the volunteers who provide leadership on our boards. To that end, many, if not most, of you served on one of the work groups making sure every detail was addressed. As we can all attest, what looked flawless from the outside required planning, rehearsing and executing… and in some instances a little more rehearsing! In the end, the Inauguration we imagined became real – tangible and palatable. As we think about Dr. Weitzel’s speech, we are challenged to do more than imagine the future; together we can create the future of Cottey College. We invite you to visit www.cottey.edu/inauguration to view the videos of Capping, Processional, and Inauguration as well as photos from events throughout the week in the Photo Gallery. College Play: The Moors Friday & Saturday, November 4-5 8:00 p.m. Center for the Arts, Auditorium Cottey's Department of Theatre will present Jen Silverman’s play The Moors, under the direction of Prof. Laura Chaney. The play is inspired by the Brontë sisters and Victorian Gothic, with a contemporary twist. Two sisters and a dog live out their lives on the bleak English moors, and dream of love and power. The arrival of a hapless governess and a moor-hen set all three on a strange and dangerous path. The Moors is a dark comedy about love, desperation, and visibility. National Disability Employment Awareness Month On Tuesday, October 25, as part of celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Cottey collaborated with local and state agencies to hold a Regional Transition and Resource Expo for area adolescents and young adults (ages 14- 26) with disabilities. The Expo provided approximately 100-120 area students, parents, and professional educators with the chance to learn about resources, educational opportunities, and employment options for students with disabilities moving from their high school to post-secondary lives. In addition to serving on the event planning committee, Stephanie McGhee, coordinator of student disability services, academic advising, and student success programming, presented to students, professionals, and parents on accommodations after high school and the differences between high school and post-secondary education, answered participants’ questions about accommodations in higher education one-on-one, and staffed a resource table with information on federal laws related to disabilities, accommodations in higher education, and employment accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
