Around the world, an increasing number of young people are going to university as a way of shaping their lives and opportunities. And it makes sense that this is happening. The world faces enormous challenges. The demands on the next generation will require them to have sophisticated skills, deep knowledge and the ability to solve complex problems. At Hallam University, we understand this. We understand the need to bring powerful knowledge to bear on the toughest challenges. We transform lives. We do this by shaping our students' futures and preparing them for whatever they choose to do, and by creating knowledge through research and industry partnerships that will provide innovative and practical solutions to real world challenges. We also know that our relationship with students starts even before they enrol at university. We aim to provide the very best information about programmes of study so that applicants have the practical skills and knowledge they need to be successful. We aim to work with schools and colleges to build strong bridges between them and the University. Our School and College Engagement Team lead a range of innovative and imaginative activities that inform, inspire and engage students from an early age up to the point of enrolment, introducing them to the benefits of higher education. Professor Sir Chris Husbands Vice- @Hallam_VC

Schools, Colleges and Community Engagement Programme 9 Higher Degree Apprenticeships

A Higher Degree Apprenticeship (HDA) provides students with the opportunity to study for a degree while applying learning to real-world projects in the workplace. Apprenticeships are an innovative combination of 80% work and 20% training - so learners will require a relevant job first - and are then able to earn a salary while they learn, with no tuition fees to pay.

Being at the forefront in the development of HDA's, Sheffield Hallam offers routes from level 4 to level 7. Having secured a job with one of the University's employer partners, learners then attend the University on a day or block release basis.

We have developed a number of engagement activities that help to demystify this alternative route to a degree, and help students make informed choices about their next steps. HDA APPLICATION WORKSHOP HDA INTRO This session offers an interactive look at how students This session introduces students to Higher and Degree can access Higher and Degree Apprenticeships. Students will leave opportunities, highlights key similarities/differences feeling more informed and confident about how to between HDAs and full-time university study, dispels approach their next application. common misconceptions and also signposts students to extra resources and application routes.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT SHUBUILD SHUBuild is an interactive team contest where students design and develop an exciting entertainment venue. Diverse tasks call for skills which are key in education and employment – such as creativity, communication and problem-solving – and these are linked to career paths and HE routes, including degree apprenticeships. One team will emerge as the overall winner, but the focus is encouraging students to think for themselves and find out more about their next steps.
