P16 21 P15 - IHS Supporters P & C Meetings New Year 12 Space P & C meetings are held on the fourth Monday of the month. The next meeting is on: Date: Monday 27 August 2018 Time: 5:30pm Where: School Library CLOSED FOR HOLIDAYS MON 9 - FRI 20 JULY  This is a chance to meet other parents and learn what is going on at your child’s school. TERM 3 RESUMES MONDAY 23 JULY STAFF DEVELOPMENT  Become involved in your child’s school community. TUESDAY 24 JULY FOR ALL STUDENTS

From the Principal’s Desk . . . It seems remarkable that we are approaching the end of Term 2 and the half-way point of the school year! Half Yearly examinations, assessment tasks and reports have now been finalised and have been distributed. I would like to acknowledge and thank the teaching and administration staff for their efforts in getting so much of this done so professionally. Our staff will also have attended and given feedback to parents/carers at parent – teacher afternoons. Please contact the school and organise a time with staff to give you a call if you have missed these opportunities. Like us – Irrawang High School on Facebook to receive regular updates of events.

Year 12 HSC Preparation This is a really important time for our Year 12 students. They continue to impress us in so many ways. As we approach the end of Term 2, they approach a period of time of intense study and pressure in the lead- up to their Trial HSC. A clear study plan, keeping up to date with class-work and assignments, and a balanced lifestyle are all key ingredients in a successful outcome. There will undoubtedly be a large number of staff who will spend significant amounts of time at school during the July school holidays to provide extra support to students. As always with the combined support of families and our school, we can all ensure these students achieve their Personal Best.

Year 12 Senior Area I would like to thank all the students and staff who have been involved in the makeover that has happened near the Industrial Arts – Art area to create an area for Year 12 to utilise at breaks and during study periods. It could not have been done so quickly without the support of Bunnings and the drive of our student leadership team particularly our captain Georgia Sulis and the wonderful support of Mrs Connor, Mrs Fagan and Mrs Lilly.

Enrolments 2019 We are currently working our way through Year 7, 2019 enrolment requests for Irrawang High School. This is a long process given the amount of applications we receive from families. In 2019 we will continue to offer our enrichment class to this new cohort of students.

Building Update We are nearly there with planned building maintenance nearing completion. This has seen gutters, fascias and some roofing replaced. Awnings painted and stormwater pipes and risers replaced around the school. We will also move a step closer to the installation of air conditioning into the school hall with the electrical upgrade being completed early in Term 3.

Classroom Upgrades

Staff and students have been trialling new furniture in 1.6 and 1.7 and this process will give us valuable feedback before we make important decisions regarding purchasing furniture that will enhance the From the Principal’s desk cont’d amazing learning spaces we want to create.. All of this work will ensure that the students of Irrawang High School will benefit from facilities that will be the envy of many other schools.

CAFÉ Irrawang CAFÉ Irrawang (school canteen) will soon have gas installed. I am sure staff and students cannot wait to see what’s on offer at CAFÉ Irrawang in Term 3. I know many staff enjoy taking something home for dinner from the canteen on a regular basis. The canteen was a huge success just recently catering for a recent dance festival. Thank you also to the P&C volunteers who gave up there weekend to help out.

Uniform The colder weather has led to students wearing their winter uniform. Students are reminded regularly of the uniform requirements and of the procedures if they are out of uniform. Students should wear black long pants and a plain black top during winter. Parents, on the whole, are supportive of our efforts. Black tights are also not part of the school uniform. They can be worn with a school skirt or shorts over the top. Any long sleeved shirts worn underneath the school t-shirt should also only be in the school colours.

School Buses Students eligible for an Opal Card for travel by public transport to and from school are reminded that it is imperative that they tap on as they get on the bus. This provides the bus company with important data regarding the use of public transport and determines routes and the frequency of buses. Youyoong 2018 Meetings

It was a very inspiring excursion Presenters explained what the different images and as students learnt about survival stories from the artefacts of the holocaust meant so that young time of the holocaust in World War II. people could understand the exhibition.

It was pleasing to see that many students asked questions about the life and times of people during that horrible era in world history. Students attended a seminar by a University lecturer who specialises in holocaust history. Here they learnt about what Star Struck STAR STRUCK is now over for another year - and what a wonderful Star Struck it was!

A huge CONGRATULATIONS to all performers - the dedication, team work and performance quality you displayed is to be admired.

CONGRATULATIONS again to our inspiring and passionate Year 12 CAPA students who performed in their final Star Struck! To the many who showed support from the audience, the CAPA family says THANK YOU!

Fishing club Congrats to the winners of the Week 8 IHS Fishing Club comp.

The winner was Jye Cox with the most points, secret fish was a Drummer won by Matt Chaffey, participation prize won by Trent Thompson, with the beautiful backdrop photo won by Zane Sorcevski.

Well done gentlemen! GATS enrichment day It was a very busy and engaging time for students from our partner primary schools at the Years 5 and 6 Gifted and talented students (GATS) enrichment day.

Students were divided into groups for various activities including; the physics egg drop challenge, learning about terminal velocity and how to create low mass and large surface areas; the geography challenge was to construct a virtual tour of a secret place after being given co-ordinates; the English challenge was to create a story using mixed images and text; the geometry challenge was to design and create a 3D city, including houses, restaurants, sky scrapers and even a Bunnings, Heatherbrae of course.

Experiment Fest Year 12 Biology students accompanied by their teacher Mr Pearson, headed down to the University of Newcastle recently to the annual Experiment Fest with many other schools from around the Hunter.

Experiment Fest is a unique program designed for HSC students to improve their skills and knowledge using a hands-on approach for selected difficult experiments and concepts.

Our students "absolutely loved" the day and were totally engaged in exercise science, using microscopes to determine the size of blood cells and working with enzymes.

News from PDHPE Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) Twenty eight Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) students travelled to Medowie, Grahamstown and Irrawang Public Schools recently to deliver one hour Fundamental Movement Skills sessions to Year 5 and 6 students.

Each group taught a different skill element from kicking, running, dodging, striking, catching and throwing and adapted these skills into fun activities. This ran as an assessment task for our year 9 students and was extremely well received by all 3 schools.

A big thank you to all our students for displaying our school PBL values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best with all their young charges.

News from PDHPE cont’d Boys hockey Experience won out on the day, recently, with our inexperienced boys hockey team conceding defeat to a talented Tomaree High School .

However, on a positive note it was a magnificent winters day, our boys enjoyed themselves, displayed all our PBL values, had fun, and are looking forward to the next game. Kip McGrath Kip McGrath Raymond Terrace are long term supporters of our school and for many years have offered a scholarship every term for a student in the areas of literacy or numeracy. Annabelle Rockley is the lucky recipient this term.

Thank you Ken, Christine and Juli. Our community partnership is invaluable.

Breakfast club Another big shout out to the Breakfast Club volunteers young and older, who turn up every day to provide our students with a hot breakfast.

Huge thanks to Medowie Lions Club for their sponsorship this term!

Beanies for brain cancer It was wonderful to present Mark Hughes with a cheque for $1507 following a big fundraising day for Beanies for Brain Cancer for the Mark Hughes Foundation. The fundraising team headed by Jess Halloran and Mrs Burns held a cake stall, sausage sizzle and perhaps the most popular of all - Year 11 student Ebony McGrorey-Clarke shaved her head raising $600.

Mrs Jenny Garner also did a fine job in contributing $1000 from the sale of Mark Hughes Foundation Beanies to staff and students.

Thank you to our sponsors on the day; Terrace Meats, Browns Butchery, Woolies Centro and Vintage Hair Co in Raymond Terrace.

News from TAS Year 11 Hospitality Year 11 Hospitality students cooked up a storm with a finger food platter for a prac lesson recently including; pork balls, sweet beef samosas (with hand made pastry) and baby spring rolls.

As you can imagine the aromas from the kitchens were amazing, but the food looked and tasted even better.

JobQuest Year 10 Defence students: Ella Ruhl, Sierra Noffke and Maddy Woodcock participated in the JobQuest Young Community Leaders program, funded by the Defence Community Organisation. The program is designed to give the students an opportunity to develop the skills to become a community role model and mentor for young people from other Defence families and the wider community.

The students received training in: skills for mentoring peers, delivering a community project, how to work effectively as part of a team with other students and building relationships and partnerships within the community.

After several mentor training sessions at school, the girls attended the Raymond Terrace Library to work with community members, helping to show them how to use their devices - ipads, phones etc.

Pictured right are the students with Mrs de Wit the Defence Transition Mentor at the presentation ceremony last week, and also working with community members. Speed careering The annual “Speed Careering” morning for all Year 10 students was a great success, with all presenters asking to be involved again next year. Big thanks to the following organisations for generously giving their valuable time to give the students a quick snapshot of a potential career.

Lakeside Creative Minds - Child Care University of Newcastle - Uni life RSPCA– Animal Care TAFE - TVET Fire Rescue NSW Raymond Terrace Defence Force Recruiting - Public Relations and Marketing and Graphic Design Hunter Regional Development - Evet Aeroskills Hunter Imaging - Radiography Novaskills - apprenticeships Please support these organisations that support our school.

Work experience Our year 10 students had an invaluable snapshot into potential careers (or not) when they participated in the work experience program at their choice of business for one week.

News from HSIE Year 8, history students were in for a treat recently with an amazing learning opportunity and presentation about life in the Viking days. As well as theoretical material, students had hands-on experience with the weaponry, amour, stocks and shields.

Community PBL winners Big congrats to all our worthy Raymond Terrace Community PBL winners this month: Maddie Petith was nominated for her fundraising efforts for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance when she did the mighty Kosci Klimb.

Hannah Williams was nominated for her caring manner when she saw a young primary school student fall sustaining an injury outside a bus stop, and brought him to our school sick bay where his parents were called.

Ryan Allison was nominated for volunteering every week for many years at our school Breakfast Club. Ebony McGrorey-Clarke was nominated for being very brave and shaving her head and raising $600 towards our Beanies for Brain Cancer fundraising day.

A community PBL box along with nomination forms are now located in our front foyer for members of the public, friends and students to nominate a student worthy of a Raymond Terrace community award.

In order to keep our records up-to-date, if your student has any change in their personal details eg doctor, medical condition, emergency contact, telephone no., address etc, please inform the school ASAP.

Does your child need an extra hand with English or Maths? Sometimes children fall behind at school. They may have moved from another state, changed classes, or something else has happened in their life beyond your control. For whatever reason they then begin to struggle

with their work at school, with their homework and with their exams. This can be frustrating for both them and you as a parent. Kip McGrath specialises in helping children catch up to where they need to be in English and Maths. The resources we use are specifically designed to do this job. And the reason we only use qualified teachers, is that they have the tools and skills to accelerate your child’s learning, so that any gaps are closed as quickly as possible.

We complement what is done at school to help your child. Your school gives your child an essential foundation in education across a wide range of subjects and developmental activities. Our job is to give your child an extra hand when they need to catch up … for whatever reason. So together we can help your child reach their full potential.

If your child is experiencing these frustrations and they need an extra hand in English or Maths, then call Christine to see how we can help.
