WELCOME Dear Friends, On behalf of the American Red Cross Greater New York Region, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our virtual Heroes for Humanity event, an occasion to celebrate and honor everyday heroes and civic leaders. While I wish we could all be together in person, this online experience is a unique opportunity to celebrate our universal mission of hope and compassion. This has been such a remarkable and challenging year for each of us and for our communities. From disaster relief and Service to the Armed Forces to blood collection and International Services, every Red Cross program has needed to adapt and innovate to continue to deliver our lifesaving mission. Though the work of the American Red Cross may look a bit different today, our teams are doing everything we can to keep people safe and healthy during this pandemic. Stanton Evans by Cliff Kincaid Those who assembled on March 12 at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Leesburg, Virginia, to celebrate the life of conservative thinker and writer M. Stanton Evans heard several references to his monumental 1994 work, The Theme is Freedom. This book is worth remembering and re-reading as we are being treated repeatedly to the spectacle in the media of “conservatives” endorsing gay rights and gay marriage. In an illustration of what Stan called the “pagan ethic,” he cites on page 128 “the campaign to change societal views of homosexuality—to treat it as an ‘alternative lifestyle,’ as valid in its way as heterosexual conduct.” Stan comments, “Among other things, this is a reversion to pagan ways of thinking.” He cites acceptance of homosexuality in ancient civilizations such as Babylon and notes, “All of this was unequivocally condemned by the religion of the Bible.” Yet, as Austin Ruse points out in his Breitbart article, “GOP Elite Ask Supreme Court to Impose Gay Marriage on America,” a brief to celebrate homosexual “marriage” as equal to traditional marriage has been submitted to the court and signed by 300 conservatives and/or Republicans, including no less than 26 former senior Mitt Romney staffers. These so-called “conservatives,” who are not conservative in any real sense, are part of a “Project Right Side” that is designed to confuse the public about the meaning of the term. The “media” section of the website tells us how news organizations have covered the “conservative case for gay marriage.” But there is nothing “conservative” about asking the Supreme Court to impose homosexual marriage on all 50 states.

    Chapter 4 -- The Cable News Wars: Another Approach to Popularizing Commercial News The recession that began in 2008 has spurred or accelerated very significant, perhaps crippling, economic troubles in most sectors of the news industry. According to the Pew Center‟s annual State of the News Media report, most major commercial news formats, including local television news broadcasts, network news divisions, news magazines, and especially daily newspapers, experienced declining revenues in 2008 and 2009.1 Media companies also made steep divestures in the newsroom budgets in these news formats. Many analysts suspect these retrenchments are not only the effects of the financial downturn generally; rather, the core business models that have supported commercial journalism appear to be faltering in a media environment undergoing fundamental transformation in the digital age. Yet, one kind of commercial news outlet that did not face declining revenues in the midst of recession: cable news stations. Cable news is a puzzling genre in many respects. It straddles a line between a “traditional” news format and something new. Given that much discussion about the future of news pivots on a distinction between traditional news models and new media emerging in a landscape reshaped by digital and social media, where does cable news fit? Is it a harbinger of things to come or a last gasp of an increasingly obsolete news model trying to find relevance?
