Another terrific book from Robert VendittiBy Laszlo"The Homeland Directive" ia another great book by Venditti. His story is rock solid and all too possible of happening in the distant future (similarly to his incredible debut, "The Surrogates"). He continues to give us stories that make one contemplate the future and wonder where we will in fact venture as a society. The best way to describe the story is to refer to it as an unofficial prequel to "V for Vendetta" (although it takes place in the US of A). I couldn't put it down, and I dearly hope he returns to this universe that's filled with politicians who think they are doing the right thing, and those few government employees who will fight them at the risk of their careers and lives. The art is also magnificent. Huddleston does a beautiful job changing the style and brush work throughout the book, using a limited color palette to give the art dynamism that matches the fast pace of the script.Another compelling read from Robert Venditti. Can't wait for the next one from him.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The touch, the thrill of moneyBy baby nightsoilWhen I heard Rob Venditti was taking over Green Lantern for Geoff Johns, I started to investigate his back catalog. While the Surrogates books were okay, The Homeland Directive made me a fan. Both Surrogates and the Homeland Directive are dystopian political thrillers, making Venditti a good candidate to take over Green Lantern. What makes the Homeland Directive special is how close to home it cuts. I think anyone harboring any suspicion against the powers that be in the US will enjoy this book whether Tea Party, socialist, libertarian, environmentalist, or mild cynic. The art is very different from the house styles of Marvel or DC. It's a little wild.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. huge Mike Huddleston fanBy CustomerArt doesn't live up to Butcher Baker the Righteous Maker from Huddleston A modern-day political/medical thriller set in our increasingly Orwellian present and steeped in concerns about personal privacy and the ongoing struggle between freedom and security. As head of the National Center for Infectious Diseases, Dr. Laura Regan is one of the world's foremost authorities on viral and bacteriological study. Having dedicated her career to halting the spread of infectious disease, she has always considered herself one of the good guys. But when her research partner is murdered and Laura is blamed for the crime, she finds herself at the heart of a vast and deadly conspiracy. Aided by three rogue federal agents who believe the government is behind the frame-up, Laura must evade law enforcement, mercenaries, and a team of cyber-detectives who know more about her life than she does, all while trying to expose a sinister plot that will impact the lives of every American. • The Surrogates: Science-Fiction As Macguffin
Quaderns de Filologia. Estudis literaris. Vol. XIV (2009) 73-84 THE Surrogates: SCIENCE-FICTION AS MACGUFFIN Jan Baetens & Thomas Van Parys K.U. Leuven In Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele’s graphic novel The Surrogates (2006), a science-fictional future has been developed in which a technological invention has come to change and dominate all aspects of human life. Due to its intelligent story, its interest in social implications rather than straightforward action, and the artistically sober graphic lay-out, this graphic novel has been received as one of the few comic books that can be truly called science-fiction, in line with the genre’s literary legacy. On the one hand, the description of “graphic novel” already implies a certain degree of high-cultural distinction from the usual comics. On the other hand, its reported aspirations to “science- fiction” imply that it moves away from the usual mix of “sci-fi”1, fantasy, and adventure in comics and closer to the specificity of science-fiction in its critical tradition. Although it may have a central constituent that is science- fiction, namely the concept of the surrogate human, The Surrogates draws at the same time heavily on cinematic imagery, cop and noir genres, and the basic structure of linear narrative. In this article, we will investigate to what extent the science-fictional “novum” distinguishes this science-fiction story from other stories with ordinary characters and an ordinary universe. Such a question is less obvious or neutral than it might seem. As a paraliterary, popular or even formulaic cultural practice, science-fiction depends dramatically on the reading habits and expectations managed and controlled by genre labels.

  • Reading American Adolescence Through the Superhero Sidekick
TRUSTY TEENS: READING AMERICAN ADOLESCENCE THROUGH THE SUPERHERO SIDEKICK Lauren R. O’Connor A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2019 Committee: Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Jong-Kwan Lee Graduate Faculty Representative William Albertini Jolie A. Sheffer © 2019 Lauren R. O’Connor All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Though the field of comics studies has seen rapid expansion in recent decades, and numerous characters from this subset of American literature have received pointed attention, the field has largely ignored the portrayal of adolescent figures. Yet the portrayal of teenagers in comic books reflects the primary readership of the medium, especially in the popular genre of superhero comics, teaching important if informal lessons to consumers about their present and future roles in society. This dissertation analyzes the most enduring adolescent figure in American comics and one of the most widely-known adolescent figures in all of American literature: Robin, sidekick to Batman. Through close reading and textual analysis of comics featuring Robin, I find that depictions of Robin reinforce an image of idealized maturity inextricably linked to white heterosexual masculinity, while simultaneously shoring up the youthful or childish connotations of queerness, non-whiteness, and femininity. The ways in which comic creators have depicted adolescence intersecting with other social identities reveals an investment in establishing a sense of heroic inheritance for white male teen characters and a pattern of exclusion for non-white or female adolescent characters. This dissertation marks an intervention in the field of comics studies, which often focuses on adult-oriented comics and adult figures while ignoring or eschewing the largely juvenile roots of the medium.
