PRESS RELEASE FRIDAY 14 SEPTEMBER THE OLD VIC SEASON 4: PART 2 Matthew Warchus’ fourth season as Artistic Director of The Old Vic completes with an Arthur Miller double-bill, a World Premiere by Lucy Prebble and a special One Voice performance. These productions form Part 2 of the season, and follow the previously announced Part 1 consisting of ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company’s production of SYLVIA; Annie-B Parson’s 17c; Emma Rice’s Wise Children; and A Christmas Carol – for which today we also announce further casting. • Visionary director Rachel Chavkin makes her Old Vic debut directing Arthur Miller’s The American Clock from 4 February • Jeremy Herrin directs Sally Field, Bill Pullman, Jenna Coleman and Colin Morgan in Arthur Miller’s American classic All My Sons in a co-production with Headlong from 15 April • Closing the season is A Very Expensive Poison – a new play by Lucy Prebble based on the book by Luke Harding • A special One Voice performance to mark 100 years since the Armistice, Remembrance curated by Arinzé Kene and directed by Annabel Bolton • Further casting is announced for Jack Thorne’s version of A Christmas Carol directed by Matthew Warchus and starring Stephen Tompkinson as Ebenezer Scrooge. Coming soon: • A musical adaptation of the hit 1983 film, Local Hero, adapted by David Greig and Bill Forsyth, directed by John Crowley and with music and lyrics by Mark Knopfler, will come to The Old Vic in June 2020 following its world premiere at the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh in 2019. From The Old Vic: • Girl from the North Country opens on 1 October at the Public Theater, New York, and performances have been extended until 9 December. -

Latest News and Opera Glass Top 10 Winter 2015/16 London Opera Glass Top 10 Theatres For the last quarter of 2015, we decided to double the number of hampers to 10! Transformation at the Apollo Victoria Opened in 1930 as the New Victoria Cinema, the auditorium was designed to represent a ‘fairy cavern under the sea, or a mermaid’s dream of heaven’. This theme was reflected in the original seating and carpet design which created a wave effect in greens, blues and silvers. The 10 winning theatres, Now, fast-forward to last year and the start of the major project, replacement seating, in alphabetical order, are: carpet and new green opera glasses, will be completed in time for Wicked’s 10th Anniversary in September 2016. Remarkable Highgate Women A joint project between the HLSI and photographer Ruth Corney This exhibition has developed from a project begun in the HLSI Archives to document the many Highgate women, aged 80 or more, who have made their mark on their community or further afield. They all deserve our notice, have done remarkable things and have lived life to the full. Working women, refugees, social activists, scientists, mothers, teachers, actors or writers – we want to know about them and to celebrate them. Hilary Laurie, HLSI I have long been fascinated by the faces of older women and have loved photographing them. Over the last 2 years, I have photographed 18 wonderful women. It has been a joy to meet them, to talk to them and to find out about their lives. I have found their positivity, resilience, vivacity, wisdom and generosity of spirit inspiring. Ruth Corney Eva Alberman Eva was born in Berlin in August 1929. When her father, a doctor, lost his job in 1933 the family left for London. Their house in Golders Green quickly became home to other family members. Eva was evacuated with a cousin to Bath to live with her father’s sister and her husband, the writer Stefan Zweig. In 1943 she was brought back home – ‘just in time for the rockets, but this didn’t worry me.’ At St Paul’s Girls’ School she took up the cello and ‘had lots of music and good friends’. She studied medicine at Newnham College, Cambridge and continued her training at the London Hospital, qualifying in 1955 with a first-class degree. -

The scheme offers them the opportunity to expand their networks, experience first class mentoring and receive funding to create three brand new plays as a collective. The newly announced Old Vic 12 consists of: ➔ Directors, Chelsea Walker, Lekan Lawal and Jesse Jones ➔ Producers, Molly Roberts, Tobi Kyeremateng and Aaron Rogers ➔ Playwrights, Joe White, Rebecca Crookshank and John O’Donovan ➔ Designer, Fin Redshaw ➔ Movement Director, Rachael Nanyonjo ➔ Composer, Cassie Kinoshi This Autumn, after receiving 1,300 applications and interviewing over 300 candidates, The Old Vic is thrilled to start work with these artists to nurture and unveil the work they produce. Artistic Director, Matthew Warchus said, ‘Supporting the next generation of theatre-makers is one of the most important and effective contributions to our cultural future we can make. It is also one of the most enjoyable. The Old Vic 12 sees emerging creatives engaging with people at the top of their profession across a wide range of theatrical disciplines and it's hugely inspiring to see how much all parties get from the mutual exchange of ideas. The presence of these early-career creative minds in our midst through the year is extremely energising. It is through a sense of history that we define who we are, what journey we have undertaken and how far we have come. We also, implicitly, map out the future. By building upon the achievements of the past, as disability arts practitioners and the broader disability arts community, we can ensure that we are creating something solid that we hand down to those who come after us. But to be accessible to future generations, those achievements have to be documented. Otherwise, everything we do is transient, a superior form of occupational therapy. We might as well have been basket-weaving for the last twenty years. This process is particularly important for us as disabled people, because mainstream society devalues and marginalises so many of our achievements and struggles. We have to document our own culture, because it is not seen as significant enough to be documented in mainstream histories of the arts. We need to be able to hand something on to further generations that offers a vibrant view of disabled people, saying that there have been people like them before, and they created something of value, something that values them, something that is there for them to add to. And we can tell them the names of some of those people.
