Her memorial is celebrated on Monday, August 30th. This is the story of Saint Jeanne Jugan. Born in northern France during the French Revolution—a time when congregations of women and men religious were being suppressed by the national government, Jeanne would eventually be highly praised in the French academy for her community's compassionate care of elderly poor people. When Jeanne was three and a half years old, her father, a fisherman, was lost at sea. Her widowed mother was hard pressed to raise her eight children alone: four died young. At the age of 15 or 16, Jeanne became a kitchen maid for a family that not only cared for its own members, but also served poor, elderly people nearby. Ten years later, Jeanne became a nurse at the hospital in Le Rosais. Soon thereafter, she joined a third order group founded by Saint John Eudes. After six years, she became a servant and friend of a woman she met through the third order. They prayed, visited the poor, and taught catechism to children. After her friend’s death, Jeanne and two other women continued a similar life in the city of Saint-Sevran. In 1839, they brought in their first permanent guest. They began an association, received more members, and more guests. Mère Marie of the Cross, as Jeanne was now known, founded six more houses for the elderly by the end of 1849, all staffed by members of her association—the Little Sisters of the Poor. By 1853, the association numbered 500 and had houses as far away as England. Abbé Le Pailleur, a chaplain, had prevented Jeanne’s re-election as superior in 1843; nine years later, he had her assigned to duties within the congregation, but would not allow her to be recognized as its founder. In 1890, the Holy See removed him from office. By the time Pope Leo XIII gave her final approval to the community’s constitutions in 1879, there were 2,400 Little Sisters of the Poor. Jeanne died later that same year, on August 30. Her cause was introduced in Rome in 1970. She was beatified in 1982 and canonized in 2009. On Friday, September 3, we celebrate the Memorial of Saint Gregory. Gregory was the prefect of Rome before he was 30. After five years in office, he resigned, founded six monasteries on his Sicilian estate, and became a Benedictine monk in his own home at Rome. Ordained a priest, Gregory became one of the pope’s seven deacons, and served six years in the East as papal representative in Constantinople. He was recalled to become abbot, but at the age of 50 was elected Pope by the clergy and people of Rome. Gregory was direct and firm. He removed unworthy priests from office, forbade taking money for many services, emptied the papal treasury to ransom prisoners of the Lombards and to care for persecuted Jews and the victims of plague and famine. He was very concerned about the conversion of England, sending 40 monks from his own monastery. He is known for his reform of the liturgy, and for strengthening respect for doctrine. His book, Pastoral Care, on the duties and qualities of a bishop, was read for centuries after his death. He described bishops mainly as physicians whose main duties were preaching and the enforcement of discipline. In his own down-to-earth preaching, Gregory was skilled at applying the daily Gospel to the needs of his listeners. Called “the Great,” Gregory has been given a place with Augustine, Ambrose, and Jerome, as one of the four key doctors of the Western Church. Gregory was content to be a monk, but he willingly served the Church in other ways when asked. He sacrificed his own preferences in many ways, especially when he was called to be Bishop of Rome. Once he was called to public service, Gregory gave his considerable energies completely to this work. Gregory’s description of bishops as physicians fits in well with Pope Francis’ description of the Church as a “field hospital.” In the days ahead many of our students will be returning to the classrooms. We pray that this will be a good school year for all. As we begin this new school year, I remind all parents of our parish of the importance of weekly Mass attendance. Overall, during the summer months attendance by all age groups has not been of the level it should be, not just here at Holy Apostles but at many other Churches throughout the State. I realize that the Pandemic has caused a lot of concern. I feel the Church is a very safe place to worship our loving God. If you feel that you need to wear a mask, that is your choice. We are glad that you are with us for the Eucharistic Celebration. We are reminded that attendance, participation and support of the parish is not just during the school year, but it is year-round for all Catholics. Please be assured of my prayers for all students and teachers of our parish at they return to their respective schools. May this be a good year for all! Have a good week! Fr. • Saints' Biographies Paint Rich Portrait of Faith
Saints’ biographies paint rich portrait of faith ROME – The Rite of Canonization Oct. 11 included a brief biography of each of the new saints, read by Archbishop Angelo Amato, S.D.B., prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and a sung litany of saints. Then Pope Benedict XVI pronounced a formal declaration of canonization. Relics of each saint were brought to the altar. The saints were presented to the pope in this order: • St. Sigmund Felix Felinski (1822-1895) was born in what was then Poland, but is now Ukraine. He studied for the priesthood in St. Petersburg, Russia, and eventually became Archbishop of Warsaw, Poland, in 1862 where he brought about a spiritual revival in his archdiocese by promoting religious and civil rights. After just 16 months, Tsarist authorities exiled him to Siberia. • St. Francis Coll Guitart (1812-1875) of Spain, founder of the Dominican Sisters of the Annunciation, was especially dedicated to missionary preaching, even in the last few years of his life while he suffered from progressive apoplexy and the resulting blindness. • Joseph de Veuster (1840-1889), who later became a priest of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary and took the name Father Damien, will likely be known to the world as St. Damien of Molokai. Born in Belgium, he entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts like his brother and when his brother’s illness prevented him from going on a mission to the Hawaiian Islands, Damien obtained permission from the order’s superior to take his place.

The brief conversation we heard in the Gospel passage, between a man identified elsewhere as the rich young man and Jesus, begins with this question (cf. Mk 10: 17-30). We do not have many details about this anonymous figure; yet from a few characteristics we succeed in perceiving his sincere desire to attain eternal life by leading an honest and virtuous earthly existence. In fact he knows the commandments and has observed them faithfully from his youth. Yet, all this which is of course important is not enough. Jesus says he lacks one thing, but it is something essential. Then, seeing him well disposed, the divine Teacher looks at him lovingly and suggests to him a leap in quality; he calls the young man to heroism in holiness, he asks him to abandon everything to follow him: "go, sell what you have, and give to the poor... and come, follow me" (v. 21). "Come, follow me". This is the Christian vocation which is born from the Lord's proposal of love and can only be fulfilled in our loving response. Jesus invites his disciples to give their lives completely, without calculation or personal interest, with unreserved trust in God.
