The Romans observed the New Year in late March. In order to set the calendar right, the Ro- man senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the New Year. In order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had to let the previous year drag on for 445 days. NEW YEAR TRADITIONS Traditions include making New Year's resolutions. That tradition dates back to the early Babylo- nians. Many resolutions we make include the promise to lose weight, quit smoking or eating sweets. The early Babylonian's most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equip- ment. The Tournament of Roses Parade dates back to 1886. In some cultures, Father Time is only seen during the New Year. This is because he is thought to hand over the duties of the New Year to Baby New Year. Some believe that Father Time is constantly watching us and has every one of our hourglasses slowly de- creasing, sand slipping through the hands of time. PAGE 2 READY...SET...RETIRE!
