VOLUME 7, ISSUE 1 FEBRUARY 2012 Submitted By: Nancy Stugart The celebration of the New Year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. The Romans observed the New Year in late March. In order to set the calendar right, the Ro- man senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the New Year. In order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had to let the previous year drag on for 445 days. NEW YEAR TRADITIONS Traditions include making New Year's resolutions. That tradition dates back to the early Babylo- nians. Many resolutions we make include the promise to lose weight, quit smoking or eating sweets. The early Babylonian's most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equip- ment. The Tournament of Roses Parade dates back to 1886. In some cultures, Father Time is only seen during the New Year. This is because he is thought to hand over the duties of the New Year to Baby New Year. Some believe that Father Time is constantly watching us and has every one of our hourglasses slowly de- creasing, sand slipping through the hands of time. PAGE 2 READY...SET...RETIRE! The tradition of using a baby to signify the New Year was begun in Greece around 600 BC. FOR LUCK IN THE NEW YEAR Traditionally, it was thought that you could affect the luck you would have in the coming year by what you did or ate on the first day of the year.

Would you rather make a resolution to give up Netflix for the coming year or Snapchat? Would you rather have to spend the week after the New Year dressed up as the Baby New Year or Father Time? Would you rather have to make 100 New Year’s resolutions or eat 100 cocktail meatballs? Would you rather swim in a pool of holiday punch or a pool of warm cocoa? Would you rather sing the National Anthem at a football bowl game or be the one to interview the losing quarterback? Would you rather be able to say “Happy New Year” in 100 languages or know the answer to 1000 random trivia questions? Would you rather be on the New Year’s Eve countdown show with Ryan Seacrest or appear on a float at the Rose Bowl parade? Would you rather have to wear your winter coat at the Orange Bowl game in Florida or your bathing suit in Times Square on New Year’s Eve? Would you rather be the person who makes the ball drop in Times Square or the person who sets off the fireworks over the Sydney Harbour Bridge? Would you rather have to sweep up the confetti in Times Square or the person who cleans the cages at the Bronx Zoo? Would you rather have streamers stuck in your hair or confetti stuck
