OUR OPINION Impact fees suspension needs sunset hen it comes to economic development projects, the City of Lake City’s internal utility commit- Wtee is right to encourage these developments by recommending suspending impact fees for utility connections on commercial and industrial developments throughout 2021. It’s a prudent move to help encourage any and all forward motion in economic development. The full City Council now will consider the committee’s recommenda- tion. The city must play its cards carefully, as it has a lim- ited hand. The city is landlocked, most of the growth and economic development potential is located in the unincorporated county and there’s not as much property available for development in the small area inside city limits. There has been economic growth both commercially and residentially within the city limits with impact fees suspended during the past year and this is good to see. The suspension of impact fees has worked in the city’s favor. The city has gained perpetual utility customers — forever consumers of city utility services — which is a good thing for city business.
