In 1904 Volume XI-D, which cousisted of a collection of tables with introductory notes, was issued with a view to supple­ menting tLe parent volume with more recent statistics. It W'l:5 a~ain corrected in 1913 and .this volume now contains information up to the year 1922.

famine.-In 18\JG-~li some telief measures were . necessary owing to a partial crop failure due to an insufficient rainfall. The maximum· daily an·rDge number relieved, however, was only 2,139 in October 11'UG. The works remained open for 14 months. Two works of uwtal-lm:aking were opened in September 1897 for the Alibag-Campoli ::m(l Dharamtar-~Iahad Roads. The total amount expe:tded on these works nmuunted to Rs. 2,73:2. Rs. 55,120 were ad,·anced under the Land Improvement Loans Act and Rs. 16,114 under the Agriculturists' Ll'

The result of the survey operations on the area aml assessment of the land in the State is shown below :- ·

Thus the Survey Settlement showed an increase in area of 41,021 acreB and enhanced the revenue by Rs. 5,277. The State forests covering an area of 44;944 acres have been divided into 30. blocks and annual receipts of over rupees one lac are derived from them. Unarable land amounts to 128,902 acres and arable to 26,806, of which the culturable waste is 623 acres .. The principal crops are rice (24,671 acres), cocoanuts and betelnuts {1,512). Skilled artisans are paid annas 12 to Rs. 1-8-0 per day, and unskilled labourers earn 8 to 10 annas per day. Tagavi advances made during the last eleven years are :- Year. Ra.

Important Public Works.-The important works. constructed since 1917 are as follows:- 1. A Dharmashalla at Uurud-Janjira. 2. A new road Ly the side of the seashore leading to the 1\Iurud Customs House. The following annual amounts have been spent on Public W~rks during the last eb·en years :- Yea.r. The grain in stOck in the State was insufficient to meet local requirements. Prices rose and distress followed among the poorest cla~ses. 'Yorks were undertaken to give employment to those affected. The total amount expended on these works was Rs. 85,862 or ue:nly Rs. 14,GOO above the ordinary State expenditure. Gratuitous relief to the extent of Rs. 2,000 was given to the non-working children, invalills, etc. Remission of Land Revenue to the amount of Rs. 36,750 was granted and Tagavi was advanced to the extent of Rs. 7~000. Cheap grain shops were also open. .Seven hundred and three persons out of tho~e in distress in Jafarabadwere brought into the State for employ­ ments and about 185,!).1.() lbs. of grass was sent to Jafarabad for the use of the cattle there. Relief measures were continued till the harvest in 1900-0l. Tl1e total expenditure in the year 1900-01 amounted to Rs. 2!,17::!, out of which Rs. 1,200 were given to non-working children, in,·alids, He. The average total number of persons on relief was 931, of whom 6H belonged to Jafarabad in Kathiawar. llf20-4 50 BOMBAY GAZETTEER Plague.-After the Cholera, which carried off over 500 persons between • the· months of April and August 1896, three cases of bubonic placrue were recorded in December of the same year. The total cost of maintaining the force is about Rs. 37,000. The Janjira Imperial Service Signalling Units were disbanded in April 1917 as they were found unfit for active service. The Police numbers 150 at an annual cost of Rs. 25,000. There is a Central Jail. at 1\Iurud with a daily average of 15 .P~isoners, and maip.tained at an annual cost -of Rs. 2,065. The State has a revenue of over Rs .. 20,000 derived from Salt. The annual sale of Salt amounts to over 12,000 maunds. Opium is purchased from British Government. The annual requirements are over 150 poundil. The Abkari system is the same as in the Bagayat portion of the in Kolaba District. The heads of the realizations in 1921-1922 were as under :- 1921-22.
