HILL Adviser: Professor William Kornblum Online social network participation is widespread among American adolescents. Prolific creators, consumers and curators of content, they write themselves into being (boyd, 2007) on social network sites like Facebook. Drawing on Erving Goffman’s study of symbolic interaction in the form of dramaturgical perspective and The Third Person Effect, this research explores how young women ages 14-17 craft their self-presentations, engage in impression management, and experience aggression and bullying on Facebook. I propose that the majority of this age cohort craft online self-presentations that are consistent with their offline selves, yet they believe that other girls their age use their profiles to craft distinct online portrayals. I hypothesize that girls who restrict their privacy settings to “viewable by friends only” have fewer experiences with aggression and bullying than those who don’t. I analyze these data from the perspective of youth culture on Facebook and the discourse of digital citizenship. Data for this research comes from the Girl Scouts Research Institute’s “Who’s that Girl? Image and Social Media Survey,” fielded through online interviews in 2010 to a geographic mix of individuals consistent with U.S. Census figures. Respondents are 1,026 young women (Girl Scouts and non- Girl Scouts) evenly distributed across the ages of 14-17 who have profiles on at least one social network site, including Facebook. v The majority of respondents report that they craft self-presentations on Facebook that reflect their offline self-portrayals, yet they believe most other girls their age do so in ways that make themselves look different and cooler than they really are. Those who restrict the three sections of their Facebook profiles to viewable by friends only experience fewer incidences of aggression than those who don’t.     Chapter 1 Time and Work: Changes and Challenges Cynthia Fuchs Epstein and Arne L. Kalleberg IME IS A basichuman concern. It orders the lives of all individ- Tuals and groups. Time differentiation is a basic component of social structure and of the cultural value system: time designations structure human effort, experience, and expectations, and cultural values are embedded in them (Durkheim 1902/1947; Merton 1984; Sorokin and Merton 1937). Throughout history claims on people’s time have come from for- mal and informal authorities—from the state, from the church, from the firm and corporation, and from the family. The “natural” pace of life, in earlier times determined by the rising and setting of the sun, has given way to an ordering by church bells, bugles, factory whis- tles, and alarm clocks, all sending messages to engage in or cease various activities. Technology—from the invention of the incan- descent light to the computer chip—has extended the possibility of work beyond the daylight hours and through time zones (Melbin 1987). Time frames are internalized in individuals’ psyches, structured as time frames are by social conditioning and cultural perspectives. Social scientists, historians, philosophers, and of course writers of fiction—particularly science fiction—have considered the issue of time in various ways through the ages and some have jostled our imaginations. Historical memory is located in identified periods—for example, the Reformation, the Hundred Years war, the Enlighten- ment, the Great Depression—and “progress” has been defined as a 1 2 Fighting for Time movement through time. Individuals born in different generations may view the same experiences through different lenses (Mannheim 1952).

Identifying the behavior manner of each of these personal characteristics, interactions among them and interpersonal relations are on the basis of the impressions given and taken. Understanding one of the important determinants of individual’s social relations helps to get a broader insight of human beings. Employees try to sculpture their relationships in organizational settings as well. Impression management turns out to be a continuous activity among newcomers, used in order to be accepted by the organization, and among those who have matured with the organization, used in order to be influential (Demir, 2002). Goffman (1959) initially started with the study of impression management by introducing a framework describing the way one presents them and how others might perceive that presentation (Cole, Rozelle, 2011). Tight markets and fierce competition force employees to think about presenting themselves in the best way that ensures their continuous employment. In this study, an attempt was made to compare between employees of Mexico and Egypt with regard to the types of impression management strategies they use. Interactions between impression management, emotional intelligence and locus of control were also investigated. Several significant insights were reached using the Mann-Whitney U test. Introduction Impression management or the technique of self-presentation was the term first introduced by Goffman in the 1950s. Impression management is the individual’s attempt to manipulate how others see him/her as if the individual is an actor on stage trying to convey a certain character to the spectators. Originally a construct in Psychology, scholars of organizational behaviour adopted it in their pursuit to understand the different complicated relationships between employees in organizations (Ashford and Northcraft, 1992; Leary and Kowalski, 1990).

Respect: Refrainment From Impression Management Behavior Despite High Impression Motivation Abstract We sometimes unintentionally distance ourselves from the people we respect. In a relationship between two individuals of perceived unequal status, what are the behaviors or factors of the person of lower status that distance him or her from the person he or she respects? Impression management is the process by which people control their impressions others form of them (Leary & Kowalski, 1990), and can be a useful theory in explaining this phenomenon; however, it does not explain the entire story. This is one possible instance in which we have high impression motivation but refrain from impression management behavior. This project aims to shed light on the nature and causes of refrainment from impression management behavior despite high impression motivation by exploring the factors that cause people to distance themselves from the people that they respect and perceive to have higher status and power. This research focuses on the distancing factors surrounding the person of the lower status.

In fact, they commonly mismanage their impres- sions without recognizing it. We review failed perspective taking and narcissism as two prominent antecedents of impression mismanagement. Further, we argue that failed perspective taking, exacerbated by narcissism, contributes to suboptimal impression management strategies, such as hubris, humblebragging, hypocrisy, and backhanded compliments.
