  • The Migration of U.S. Film and Television Production
PREFACE In the early 1990s, important segments of the U.S. film industry became increasingly concerned about the growing loss of film and television production to foreign shores. The phenomenon of “runaway film production” began as a trickle, but has since become a persistent trend that is affecting thousands of jobs in certain segments of the film and television production industry, such as sound engineers, lighting technicians, assistant directors, unit production managers, supporting actors, costume designers, and set designers. In addition, there may be an even greater number of jobs affected that are connected to film and television production, such as caterers, truck drivers, carpenters, electricians, construction workers, hotel employees, and small businesses that provide services or material goods to productions throughout the United States. Some industry observers fear that the exodus of film production could threaten the viability of important segments of the film production industry in the United States, with potentially devastating effects on local communities in many states. Last year, the Department of Commerce was asked to examine the flight of U.S. television and cinematic film production to foreign shores. In September 2000, Commerce received an additional urgent request from a bipartisan group of Members of Congress to ensure that the final report address the following issues: (1) the impact of runaway production on the “below-the-line” employees throughout the United States, including (but not limited to) caterers,

Working from a script he co-wrote with Steven Baigelman, Cheadle’s bravura directorial debut is not a conventional bio-pic but rather a unique, no-holds barred portrait of a singular artist in crisis. In the midst of a dazzling and prolific career at the forefront of modern jazz innovation, Miles Davis (Cheadle) virtually disappears from public view for a period of five years in the late 1970s. Alone and holed up in his home, he is beset by chronic pain from a deteriorating hip, his musical voice stifled and numbed by drugs and pain medications, his mind haunted by unsettling ghosts from the past.

  • We Must Eliminate All Nuclear Weapons in Order to Eliminate the Grave Risk They Pose to Our World
We must eliminate all nuclear weapons in order to eliminate the grave risk they pose to our world. This will require persistent efforts by all countries and peoples. A nuclear war would affect everyone, and all have a stake in preventing this PLOUGHSHARES FUND nightmare. RISE UP. ANNUAL REPORT 2017 Our world is poised at a tipping point. THE PROGRESS AND PROMISE of new arms control agreements has faltered, while new political forces have rekindled old animosities between nuclear rivals. New weapons programs are gearing up across the nuclear weapons states, while the United States under President Donald J. Trump has seemingly turned its back on decades of bipartisan nonproliferation efforts. The threat of stumbling into terrible new wars with North Korea and Iran has never been more real, and the risk of any new conflict going nuclear hasn’t been this great since the height of the Cold War. Ploughshares Fund is more committed than ever to fighting for peace, justice and security in this uncertain world. We lead three major coalitions aimed at: preserving peace in the Middle East by maintaining the Iranian nuclear deal; easing tensions with North Korea through a diplomatic freeze of its nuclear program; and reducing the dangers posed by our own nuclear arsenal by stemming the flow of hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars to new and destabilizing nuclear weapons. In so doing, we remain dedicated to reaching out to new communities, sharing new voices and finding new ways of building public support for a world without nuclear weapons. PLOUGHSHARES FUND ANNUAL REPORT 2017 PLOUGHSHARES.ORG 1 We must support the vibrant and diverse new mass movements rising up across this country.
