  • The Battle of Moreuil Wood
The Battle of Moreuil Wood By Captain J.R. Grodzinski, LdSH(RC) On 9 October 1918, Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) fought their last battle of the First World War. Having been in reserve since August 1918, the Strathconas and the other two cavalry Regiments of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade were rushed to the front to exploit a penetration made in the German defences. In just one day, the Brigade advanced ten kilometers on a five kilometer front, capturing four hundred prisoners and numerous weapons. A spirited charge by the Strathconas over 1500 yards of open ground helped clear the village of Clary, southeast of Cambrai. This battle, which commenced at 0930 hours and finished by 1100 hours, assisted in clearing the neighboring Bois de Gattigny and the Bois du Mont-Auxvilles, Where two hundred prisoners were taken and a howitzer and forty machine guns captured. Several squadron-sized charges were made as the Regiments raced forward. The battle moved faster than senior commanders could react to and issue new instructions. This was mobile warfare, the type the cavalry longed for throughout the war. To those in the Canadian Cavalry Brigade and particularly the Strathconas this final action, known as the Battle of Le Cateau, probably brought recollection of a similar, yet more intense fight the previous spring: The Battle of Moreuil Wood on 30 March 1918. January 1918. The war was in its fourth year. Initially a mobile conflict, it quickly became a static slugging match. Intense fighting gave little advantage to either side while the numbers of casualties increased.

  • The Last Great Cavalry Charge – Moreuil Wood & Rifle Wood, March 1918
The Last Great Cavalry Charge – Moreuil Wood & Rifle Wood, March 1918 By Richard Laughton The Great War situation was about to change in Europe in the early months of 1918, as Germany now had at its disposal a large number of troops that had previously been serving on the Eastern Front. As reported by Nicholson 1, the signing of the Russo-German Armistice on December 18, 1917 allowed the Germans to transfer 178 Divisions to the Western Front. During the late fall of 1917 and early winter of 1918, the Germans were preparing to launch major actions near St. Quentin, Arras, Armentières and Ypres with 71 Divisions, 32 of which took place in the action. The German offensive started on March 10, 1918 with an artillery assault on the French defences in Champagne and large scale troop movements by rail and road along the Arras-St. Quentin Line (see Nicholson Map 10 attached). Lt. G. V. Laughton, M.C. General Ludendorff (Chief of Staff to Field-Marshall von Hindenburg) planned to push a hole through the British front lines, then to split the British and French forces, driving the British back to the sea. The German’s had the manpower and they had the initiative, the Allies were therefore facing a major setback in their gains of the previous year. Sheffield 2 notes in his works on the war diaries and letters of British Field-Marshall Haig the following for Thursday March 21, 1918: Numerically superior in guns and men, the German forces launched Operation Michael, a massive blow against British Fifth and Third Armies.

The Somme River Basin is located above a chalk the flooding of 2001 was characterized by an increase in the aquifer and the discharge of the somme River is highly in- quantity of the overflow and not much by a spreading of fluenced by groundwater inflow (90% of river discharge is the overflow areas. Inconsistencies between river discharge baseflow). In 2001, the Somme River Basin suffered from a and piezometric levels suggest that further investigation are major flood causing damages estimated to 100 million euro needed to estimate the relative influence of unsaturated and (Deneux and Martin, 2001). The purpose of the present re- saturated zones on the hydrodynamics of the Somme River search is to evaluate the ability of four hydrologic models Basin.
