Born in Ljubljana, Yugoslavia, he received his Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Graz, Austria, in 1921. From 1921 to 1938, Kenk taught zoology at the University of Ljubljana, except for the years 1931-1932 when he was a Rockefeller Foundation Fellow at the University of Virginia. Kenk emigrated to Puerto Rico in 1938, and became a naturalized United States citizen in 1942. He served as Professor of Biology at the University of Puerto Rico from 1938 to 1948, before moving to Washington, D.C., to become a bibliographer at the Library of Congress. After his retirement in 1966, Kenk was appointed Research Associate in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology, National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), where he was placed in charge of building the flatworm specimen collection and library. He remained at NMNH until 1987. Kenk published over forty papers on flatworms. Nine invertebrates were named in his honor, including a family of flatworms called Kenkiidae. He donated his personal collection of flatworms to NMNH. Descriptive Entry The papers of Roman Kenk document his research on flatworms during all phases of his career. They include three series of correspondence covering the identification, acquisition, and exchange of specimens; the preparation and review of publications; and collecting work in Europe, Puerto Rico, and all regions of the United States. Also included are diaries documenting Kenk's daily activities as a Research Associate in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology, NMNH, from 1967 to 1987. The diaries also contain data from several collecting trips taken by Kenk. Zool. Abteilung, Postfach 417, Burgring 7, A-1014 Wien, Austria, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract Harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones) in human settlements of Slovenia were investigated examining opilionid collections deposited in Slovenia, and addi tional intensive investigations in 29 bigger urban centres. Altogether, data from 58 towns and villages have been treated. So far, 42 of 65 species and subspecies living in Slovenia have been found in the urban centres. Phalangium opilio and Nelima semproni have been found in every second, and Opilio saxatilis, Leiobunum rotun- dum, Trogulus nepaeformis s. 1., Opilio parietinus and Nemastoma bidentatum spar- sum in 20-40 % of settlements. There are three reasons for the relatively high num ber of harvestman species inhabiting towns and villages of Slovenia. First, the set tlements are relatively small and closely connected with neighbouring non-urban regions. Second, some primary habitats in settlements have not been destroyed either physically or chemically, thus the indigenous species live there continuously. Third, many secondary habitats are appropriate for inhabitation by some species. In respect to their origin, autochtonous and introduced species occur in human settlements.

In his formal plan for the Institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." This theme of basic research has been adhered to through the years by thousands of titles issued in series publications under the Smithsonian imprint, commencing with Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge in 1848 and continuing with the following active series: Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology Smithsonian Contributions to Astrophysics Smithsonian Contributions to Botany Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to the Marine Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiotogy Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology Smithsonian Studies in Air and Space Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology In these series, the Institution publishes small papers and full-scale monographs that report the research and collections of its various museums and bureaux or of professional colleagues in the world cf science and scholarship.
