FREMLING Documentation of a Mass Emergence of Hexagenia Mayflies from the Upper Mississippi River This report documents a mass Hexagenia mayfly emergence from the Upper Mississippi River, so that others may know of the mag nitude of the phenomenon if Hexagenia pop ulations are further reduced by pollution along the Upper Mississippi River. Man has already virtually eliminated Hexagenia mayflies from portions of Lake Michigan's Green Bay, west ern Lake Erie, most of the Illinois River, and from segments of the Mississippi River. Mayflies are primitive insects which belong to the order Ephemeroptera. The adults, which have vestigial mouth parts, usually mate and die within 30 hours after they emerge from the fresh water in which they have lived as aquatic nymphs. -

In the beds of all our larger lakes and streams there exists a vast animal popula tion, dependent, directly or indirectly, upon the rich organic food substances that are bestowed by gravity upon the bottom. Since Bonnet’s time there has been considerable progress in our understanding of the spider fossil record and numerous new taxa have been described. As part of a larger project to catalog the diversity of fossil arachnids and their relatives, our aim here is to offer a summary list of the known fossil spiders in their current systematic position; as a first step towards the eventual goal of combining fossil and Recent data within a single arachnological resource. To integrate our data as smoothly as possible with standards used for living spiders, our list follows the names and sequence of families adopted in the Catalog. For this reason some of the family groupings proposed in Wunderlich’s (2004, 2008) monographs of amber and copal spiders are not reflected here, and we encourage the reader to consult these studies for details and alternative opinions. Extinct families have been inserted in the position which we hope best reflects their probable affinities. Genus and species names were compiled from established lists and cross-referenced against the primary literature. -

Giberson Abstract: We examined the life history and production of the Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) commu- nity along a 500-m stretch of a hydrologically stable cold springbrook in Prince Edward Island during 1997 and 1998. Six mayfly species (Ephemeroptera), 6 stonefly species (Plecoptera), and 11 caddisfly species (Trichoptera) were collected from benthic and emergence samples from five sites in Balsam Hollow Brook. Eleven species were abundant enough for life-history and production analysis: Baetis tricaudatus, Cinygmula subaequalis, Epeorus (Iron) fragilis,andEpeorus (Iron) pleuralis (Ephemeroptera), Paracapnia angulata, Sweltsa naica, Leuctra ferruginea, Amphinemura nigritta,and Nemoura trispinosa (Plecoptera), and Parapsyche apicalis and Rhyacophila brunnea (Trichoptera). Life-cycle timing of EPT taxa in Balsam Hollow Brook was generally similar to other literature reports, but several species showed extended emergence periods when compared with other studies, suggesting a reduction in synchronization of life-cycle timing, pos- sibly as a result of the thermal patterns in the stream. Total EPT secondary production (June 1997 to May 1998) was 2.74–2.80 g·m–2·year–1 dry mass (size-frequency method). Mayflies were dominant, with a production rate of 2.2 g·m–2·year–1 dry mass, followed by caddisflies at 0.41 g·m–2·year–1 dry mass, and stoneflies at 0.19 g·m–2·year–1 dry mass. -

Appendix 1. The ES concept in the UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MAB) program What is a Biosphere Reserve? A biosphere reserve (BR) is an international designation by UNESCO in the Man And Biosphere (MAB) program. A BR includes one or several protected areas and their surrounding landscape to combine both biodiversity conservation and sustainable/wise use of natural resources. A BR is a place where local communities are involved in management through dialogue and concerted multi-stakeholder approaches. Through monitoring, research, education, and training, BRs aim to develop and demonstrate sound sustainable development practices and policies. In 2017, there are 669 BRs in 120 countries all over the world, connected through international, regional, and national networks promoting knowledge sharing and exchanges of experiences. How is the ES concept operationalized in Biosphere Reserves? Since 2013, the ES concept has been integrated in the requisite forms for BR creation or revision. Coordinators are requested to address the following: “- 12.1 If possible, identify the ecosystem services provided by each ecosystem of the biosphere reserve and the beneficiaries of these services. - 12.2 Specify whether indicators of ecosystem services are used to evaluate the three functions (conservation, development, and logistic) of biosphere reserves. If yes, which ones and give details. - 12.3 Describe biodiversity involved in the provision of ecosystems services in the biosphere reserve (e.g. species or groups of species involved). - 12.4 Specify whether any ecosystem services assessment has been done for the proposed biosphere reserve”. This requires inventory approaches, with objective ES assessments, rather than deliberations among people about ES management. -

Environment at a Glance Indicators – Biological resources and biodiversity Environment at a Glance Indicators Biological resources and biodiversity Context Issues at stake Biodiversity and ecosystem services are integral elements of natural capital. Biodiversity, which encompasses species, ecosystems, and genetic diversity, provides invaluable ecosystem services (including raw materials for many sectors of the economy) and plays an essential role in maintaining life-support systems and quality of life. The loss of biodiversity is a key concern nationally and globally. Pressures on biodiversity include changes in land cover and sea use, over-exploitation of natural resources, pollution, climate change and invasive alien species. Policy challenges The main challenge is to ensure effective conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. This implies strengthening the degree of protection of species, habitats and terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems. Strategies include eliminating illegal exploitation and trade of endangered species, putting in place ambitious policies (covering regulatory approaches, economic instruments, and other information and voluntary approaches); and integrating biodiversity concerns into economic and sectoral policies. Biodiversity protection also requires reforming and removing environmentally harmful subsidies and strengthening the role of biodiversity-relevant taxes, fees and charges, as well as other economic instruments such as payments for ecosystem services, biodiversity offsets and tradable permits
