The Tour de France is the largest annual sporting event in 2100 m the world, attracting a global audience in over 180 countries. represented 22 miles of competitive cycling with one of the most challenging stages of the whole 2014 Tour, including the four coveted King of the Mountain climbs. 1800 m Over 380,000 people lined the roads to watch to race, with over 18.6 million watching on television; 38% of the spectators were WHERES from Sheffield, 18% from and 44% from the rest of WIGGO? the UK and abroad. Sheffield saw some of the highest spectator 1500 m numbers for the Grand Départ. The post-event survey showed that 75% of the Sheffield spectators would recommend the area to family and friends and that 60% of the visitors said they would return to the city for a short break or holiday. GET THEM This represents a unique opportunity to harness the enthusiasm, KNEES profile and continuing legacy of the Tour de France in Sheffield UP to attract visitors to the city and raise local participation in 1200 m cycling. Our proposal is to put in place a scheme of ‘celebration markers’ to animate the Tour de France route focusing on the King of the Mountain climbs. This will generate excitement and profile for the city and that, more importantly, cements a long

term legacy of increasing cycling participation and attracting 900 m cyclist and visitors to the city. The scheme will make permanent some of the best and most iconic street art from the event as well as marking both the start and finish lines.

Recognising the importance of outdoor recreation is a growing 600 m priority for the City and this project will help to establish Sheffield as ‘The Outdoor City’; capitalising on the unique offer of both city life and outdoor recreation, active adventure and EY UP rural landscapes. TDF

The first stage of the project is to install a stone milestone marker signalling the start of the route into Sheffield, at the ALLEZ beginning of the Midhopestones climb, and a larger stone ALLEZ marker at the end of the route in , close to Broughton ALLEZ Lane roundabout. Broughton Lane roundabout will also be planted with yellow wildflowers to mark the significance of the area, which is where Vincenzo Nibali (the overall winner of the

Tour in 2014) won his first stage of the Tour. 800 m

These start and end markers will be installed in time for the Tour de France anniversary weekend in Sheffield, on the 4th and 5th July.

Street art in advance of the Tour de France was a pivotal part of the event, and those watching the Tour in Sheffield did not disappoint with our own unique brand of humour, capturing Sheffield’s spirit and love of our rural areas and gruelling hill climbs. 600 m

Our proposal is to animate the Tour de France route by formalising some of the more notable street art made by people during the event last year. Phrases such as ‘Shut Up Legs’, ‘Ey’Up TdF’ and ‘It’s only pain’ were painted on the road during SHEFFIELD the event and often featured in much of the media coverage. ♥ LE TOUR Using a uniform design there is an opportunity to animate the route by painting 3 to 4 of the most famous slogans as street art on to the road for each of the four King of the Mountain Climbs in Sheffield (Midhopestones, Bradfield,

and Jenkin), along with waymarkers (distance markers) every 400 m quarter of each climb. At their closest, the street art will be at approximately 100m intervals (on Jenkin Hill). For the other climbs, the intervals are longer. VIVE Each slogan will be about the same size as an A2 sheet of LE paper. The draft designs for each of the climbs are illustrated TOUR throughout this document. These are not to scale but are

designed to show you the slogans we would like to use. 200 m Maps showing the location of the street art are available to download as separate documents on the Council’s Citizen Space Consultation Portal.

Côte de Bradfield beginning. Motorists, cyclists and local residents have been considered in the placement and the design of the scheme. For example the artwork will only be in safe locations and aggregate paint will be used to minimise the risk of skidding.

SUMMIT Accompanying the start and end markers and street art, there will be a guide that people can pick-up or download for both local cyclists and visitors to the city. This guide will be available on the new ‘Sheffield: The Outdoor City’ website currently being developed to promote Sheffield’s outdoor recreation offer.

We will be running a public consultation period from the 4th July to the 26th July 2015 where you can give your views.
