50 th Annual Report for the year 2014-2015

Dear Members, Before presenting the annual report for the year 2014-15, I take this opportunity to share with you the Membership status of our society during the last year. The membership strength is 97,737, as of 31st March 2015. The number of chapters are 73 as of March 2015. Number of student branches 445 as of March 2015. The year 2014-15 is a decrease in membership of students from 97,307 to 81,904. As evident, the students have become our major stakeholders constituting 83.96% of membership base. This means no small achievement but at the same it is a very big responsibility on the entire CSI fraternity, especially the working Sanjay Mohapatra Hon. Secretary members to nurture the young minds and groom them as the next-generation IT professionals. With regard to the conferences and technical programmes (including seminars, workshops, student conventions and symposia) about 165 events were organized during the year 2013-14 at state, regional, national/ international levels across India, i.e. 2 to 3 events per week on an average- resulting into new kind of vibrancy and momentum for members and stakeholders. One of the most significant achievement of Education Directorate’s initiative training programmes for the Special Teachers in “Punarjjani” Software for the assessment and education of Mentally Challenged Children. Nearly 200 Teachers were trained in the system at two events. Education Directorate also trained mentally challenged children in basic familiarization and operation of computers. The children developed interest in the subject, and expressed their desire to pursue opportunities such as accounting, office activities, and data entry. Heralding the celebration of the 50th Year of the Society, it’s a great privilege to present the 50th Annual Report of the Computer Society of India for the year 2014-15. Operational Highlights: ƒƒ The Executive Committee (ExecCom) of the Society consisting of seventeen elected members and the immediate past president, entrusted with the responsibility of successfully running the society met four times during the year at various locations across the country to review the functioning and activities of the society and take decisions on important matters.

Membership Initiatives: Marketing and Membership enhancement have been vital to the survival and growth of CSI. Getting the institutional data fro the data bases of central and state government Agencies, a large number of colleges were contacted over cold calls for initial exposure. Brochures, Application Forms and CSIC Magazines were sent to them quickly. After consistent calls of perusal and persuasion, visits enabled direct interface with the faculty and students. During the year, CSI-ED Staff visited a large number of institutions, paving the way to the creation of several SBs and IMs. The enrolment process is preceded by extensive dialogues at multiple layers on the utility and impact of the membership. These interactions spread across institutions and individuals, including CSI RVPs, OBs, Members, Nominees, etc., all encouraging and facilitating the decision of the college. Team CSI-ED appreciates their support and contributions in enhancing the enrolment. Technical Events, Orientation Programmes, Soft Skill Development Activities, etc. were organized along with the launching of several new SBs. The staff of the SB host institutions were inspired to join CSI as Professional Members, and participate in the technology propagation and dissemination missions. The SBs were continuously mentored and encouraged to organize innovative programmes and also to expand the membership. Many Members were added to the existing SBs. Significantly, CSI-ED assisted the SBs to conduct Technical Workshops, Seminars, Contests, Faculty Development Programmes and Skill Development Sessions, and implement the other Technology Missions of the Organization.

CSI Digital Resource Centre and CSI Student Portal

The CSI Digital Resource Centre (http://csidl.org/) collects, preserves, and distributes the scholarly output of the society, including scholarly articles and books, electronic theses and dissertations, conference proceedings, multimedia, technical reports, and research data since its official launch in Dec 2012. This is an endeavor to preserve our digital assets and to improve our services to increase the impact, reach, efficiency, and value of the intellectual inputs by developing an open-source infrastructure - a new and powerful application for building dynamic collaborative communities. This allows continuous annotations of the content through community input.

To cater exclusively to our Student Community, a student portal http:// studentportal.csidiscoverthinking.com/ is hosted. Student branches can post the announcement of their events and event reports along with photographs. Student members can submit articles, apps, projects and benefit in many more ways. Senior CSI members are volunteering in making this portal a success.

These two are driven by our passionate members and is continuously improved and features added as per the feedback received.
