The membership strength is 97,737, as of 31st March 2015. The number of chapters are 73 as of March 2015. Number of student branches 445 as of March 2015. The year 2014-15 is a decrease in membership of students from 97,307 to 81,904. As evident, the students have become our major stakeholders constituting 83.96% of membership base. This means no small achievement but at the same it is a very big responsibility on the entire CSI fraternity, especially the working Sanjay Mohapatra Hon. Secretary members to nurture the young minds and groom them as the next-generation IT professionals. With regard to the conferences and technical programmes (including seminars, workshops, student conventions and symposia) about 165 events were organized during the year 2013-14 at state, regional, national/ international levels across India, i.e. 2 to 3 events per week on an average- resulting into new kind of vibrancy and momentum for members and stakeholders. One of the most significant achievement of Education Directorate’s initiative training programmes for the Special Teachers in “Punarjjani” Software for the assessment and education of Mentally Challenged Children. Nearly 200 Teachers were trained in the system at two events. Education Directorate also trained mentally challenged children in basic familiarization and operation of computers. The children developed interest in the subject, and expressed their desire to pursue opportunities such as accounting, office activities, and data entry. Heralding the celebration of the 50th Year of the Society, it’s a great privilege to present the 50th Annual Report of the Computer Society of India for the year 2014-15. The council administers the Society through the preparation and maintenance of various operational manuals and make all decisions except those specially reserved for the 3 TM TM COMPUTER SOCIETY OF INDIA General Body and shall advise the General Body on all matters coming up for decision. The year 2014-15 witnessed majority of chapters completing the elections as per the scheduled whereas a few of the chapters were guided with the respective Regional Vice Presidents and Nomination committees to form ad hoc management committees. Our PhD students strength is around 170, and our post-doctoral student strength is presently 59. We are very pleased to note that an increasing number of students in the country are ben- efiting from our outreach programmes (for instance, Enriching Mathematics Education, FACETS 2015, Physics Training and Talent Search Workshop) and we are proud of the efforts of our faculty, both at an individual and at institutional level in this regard. IMSc has started a monograph series last year, with a plan to publish at least one book every year. A book entitled “Problems in the Theory of Modular Forms” as ‘IMSc Lecture Notes - 1’ has been published this year Academic productivity of the members of the Institute has remained high. There were several significant publications reported in national and international journals and our faculty have authored a few books as well. Five students were awarded Ph.D., and three students have submitted their Ph.D. theses. Four students were awarded M.Sc. by Research, and two students have submitted their master’s theses under the supervision of our faculty.

    Changing Landscape of Higher Education in India: The Case of Engineering Education in Tamil Nadu P. Geetha Rani° Abstract The self financing institutions of higher technical education in Tamil Nadu exploit the circumstances and emerge as something similar to the for-profit higher education in the United States wherein students and families buy higher education services. The private institutions have grown sporadically within a very short span covering more than 90 percent of the total engineering and management colleges in the state. Given this dominant share of private self-financing institutions in higher education with a focus on technical education, the paper attempts to look at the growth of such institutions over a period of time from 1985- 86 to 2008-09. The changing nature of higher and technical education is much more nuanced and cumulative across time but also multi-woven in terms of policy paradigms at global, macro economic, sector specific and sub-sector level. The present paper makes an attempt to look at these changing dynamics of higher education, using engineering education in Tamil Nadu as a case of reference. The paper attempts to marshal the emerging salient characteristics of private higher education focusing on technical education in the state. While doing so, it brings out the major issues of the private colleges in the state.
