It is important to know how, exactly, re-vegetation influences soil moisture conditions, which not only crucially constrain growth and distribution of vegetation, and hence, further re-vegetation, but also determine the degree of soil desiccation and, thus, erosion risk in the region. In this study, three eco-environmental factors, which are Soil Water Index (SWI), the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and precipitation, were used to investigate the response of soil moisture in the one-meter layer of top soil to the re-vegetation during the GGP. -

In this study, we first classified annual LCLU maps from 2001–2015 in QTP from MODIS satellite images, then analyzed the patterns of regional hotspots with significant land changes across QTP, and finally, associated these trends in land change with climate forcing and human activities. The pattern of land changes suggested that forests and closed shrublands experienced substantial expansions in the southeastern mountainous region during 2001–2015 with the expansion of massive meadow loss. Agricultural land abandonment and the conversion by conservation policies existed in QTP, and the newly-reclaimed agricultural land partially offset the loss with the resulting net change of 5.1%. Although the urban area only expanded 586 km2, mainly at the expense of agricultural − land, its rate of change was the largest (41.2%). Surface water exhibited a large expansion of 5866 km2 (10.2%) in the endorheic basins, while mountain glaciers retreated 8894 km2 ( 3.4%) mainly in the − southern and southeastern QTP. -

WHITE JADE RING AND QUEEN MOTHER OF THE WEST As for the foundation and succession myths of early Chinese dynasties, Allan holds that “Ancient Chinese literature contains few myths in the traditional sense of stories of the supernatural but much history” (Allan, 1981: ix) and “history, as it appears in the major texts from the classical period of early China (fifth-first centuries B.C.),has come to function like myth” (Allan, 1981: 10). While “the problem of myth for Western philosophers is a problem of interpreting the meaning of myths and the phenomenon of myth-making” as Allan remarks, “the problem of myth for the sinologist is one of finding any myths to interpret and of explaining why there are so few.” (Allen, 1991: 19) To decode why white jade enjoys a prominent position in the Chinese culture, the underlying conceptual structure and unique culture genes should be investigated. -

He was born a prince during the Liang Dynasty, became Crown Prince upon his older brother's death, and eventually succeeded to the crown after the Liang court had come under the control of a rebel named Hou Jing (d. 552). He was murdered by Hou before long and was posthumously given the title of "Emperor of Jianwen (Jianwen Di)" by his younger brother Xiao Yi (508-554). Xiao's writing of amorous poetry was blamed for the fall of the Liang Dynasty by Confucian scholars, and adverse criticism of his so-called "decadent" Palace Style Poetry has continued for centuries. By analyzing Xiao Gang within his own historical context, I am able to develop a more refined analysis of Xiao, who was a poet, a filial son, a caring brother, a sympathetic governor, and a literatus with broad and profound learning in history, religion and various literary genres. Fewer than half of Xiao's extant poems, not to mention his voluminous other writings and many of those that have been lost, can be characterized as "erotic" or "flowery". -

As a paddy-rice agricultural state of Southeast Asia, Vietnam has localized Confucianism and absorbed it into Southeast Asian culture. Therefore, Vietnamese Confucianism has been decentralized and horizontalized after being introduced and accepted. Beside the local uniqueness of Shintoism, Japan has shared Confucianism, the Indian-originated Mahayana Buddhism and other East Asian philosophies; therefore, both Confucian and Buddhist philosophies should be wisely laid as a common channel for cultural exchange between Japan and Vietnam. This semiotic research aims to investigate and generalize the symbol of dragons in Vietnam and Japan, looking at their Confucian and Buddhist absorption and separate impacts in each culture, from which the common and different values through the symbolic significances of the dragons are obviously generalized. The comparative study of Vietnamese and Japanese dragons can be enlarged as a study of East Asian dragons and the Southeast Asian legendary naga snake/dragon in a broader sense. The current and future political, economic and cultural exchanges between Japan and Vietnam could be sped up by applying a starting point at these commonalities. -

The transportation routes here thus connect China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, the land route being the gateway to China and Southeast Asia. According to historical texts written by the Chinese court, these surrounding countries were required to pay tribute to China. Relations between the Chinese court and the tributaries were ruptured once during the Song period (960–1127), while they were put directly under control as terri- tory of the Chinese court on a limited basis only after the Yuan dynasty (1271– 1368). Chinese historical chronicles acknowledge that these were frontier regions with inconvenient access. Yunnan’s unique topography accounts for this phenomenon. Elevation in Yunnan becomes progressively higher as one proceeds northwest. Meili Xueshan has the highest elevation at 6740 meters above sea level, while elevation drops off in the southeast, the lowest point being 76 meters above sea level in Hekou City. Mountains comprise approximately 84 percent of the terrain, and plateaus, about 10 percent. Only about six percent are small basins called bazi, running along the mountain ranges.1) This unique geography necessitates that mountains be crossed in order to transport goods from one plain to another. -

The project area involves a number of ethnic minorities, including Yi, Hani and Lisu. B. Socioeconomic profile of ethnic minorities 2. Poverty and income: The Project involves 16 cities/prefectures in Yunnan Province. In 2013, there were 6.61 million poor population in Yunnan Province, which accounting for 17.54% of total population. In 2013, the per capita net income of rural residents in Yunnan Province was 6,141 yuan. 3. Gender Heads of households are usually men, reflecting the superior status of men. Both men and women do farm work, where men usually do more physically demanding farm work, such as fertilization, cultivation, pesticide application, watering, harvesting and transport, while women usually do housework or less physically demanding farm work, such as washing clothes, cooking, taking care of old people and children, feeding livestock, and field management. In Lijiang and Dali, Bai and Naxi women also do physically demanding labor, which is related to ethnic customs. Means of production are usually purchased by men, while daily necessities usually by women. -

Graduate Program in School of Earth Sciences The Ohio State University 2020 Dissertation Committee: Joachim Moortgat, Advisor David Cole Tom Darrah Derek Sawyer 1 Copyrighted by Fengyang Xiong 2020 2 Abstract Storage of subsurface shale gas is challenging to characterize because nanoporous shales consist of almost all commonly observed minerals and develop a wide pore size distribution of 0.4 nm to 1 ��. Petroleum geoscientists classify the subsurface shale gas into three components: free gas in the pore space, adsorbed gas on mineral surfaces, and dissolved gas in formation fluids and organic matter. Based on investigations of shale gas plays in the United States, the adsorbed gas can contribute up to 85% of the total shale gas- in-place (GIP). And the storage of adsorbed shale gas, which mainly consists of methane, is determined by multiple geological properties, e.g., pore structure, mineral composition, temperature, pressure, and water saturation. These complex multivariate relationships complicate the assessment of subsurface adsorbed gas, which is still challenging for exploration geoscientists to quantitatively characterize. In this dissertation, we investigate the pore structure of shales, including the roles of organic matter, mainly insoluble kerogen, and inorganic minerals in pore development using Soxhlet extraction and low-pressure nitrogen and carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms. We then study the relationship between in-situ desorbed gas and mineralogy on large core samples. Most importantly, we propose an experimental procedure to estimate the pressure-dependent density of adsorption, which will significantly improve future estimates of adsorbed gas in shale GIP assessment.
