Lawrence University Honors Project The Irish Experience: Identity and Authenticity in Irish Traditional Music Elizabeth Graber Lawrence University Ethnic Studies/Ethnomusicology February 11, 2015 Advisor: Sonja Downing 2 Introduction Brogan’s Pub buzzed with energy on a Tuesday night in August. A group of musicians formed a circle around a reserved table in the corner and chatted while they took out their instruments—three fiddles, a guitar, a bouzouki, a concertina, two bodhráns [bæwr nz] and a harmonica—and bought drinks at the bar. A Hawaii-born flutist who lived in Ennis recognized my case and invited me to join the session. I sat between the flutist and a bodhrán player from Baltimore who’d spent eight consecutive summers in Ireland. After a few sets, an Irish fiddler invited a young Swedish woman sitting by the wall to take out her fiddle and join the circle, now much larger than the small table that had been reserved for musicians.

  • Complete Music List 2017
Complete Music Playlist Updated June 2017 This is a complete list of Anne’s current repertoire. Songs are arranged by category, and they alphabetized and numbered within each category, for your convenience. (Some titles are duplicated under several different categories). The music on this list is suitable for most events, including weddings, except for the last category. Search for the category of music you like, and then go from there to make your selections. If you find this list to be too overwhelming, refer to the Music Favorites Playlist on Anne’s website at HarpistAnneRoos.com. Listen to tracks from her CDs at iTunes, Amazon.com, and CDBaby.com. Need help selecting your wedding music? Download ideas for How to Select Your Wedding Music on Anne’s website. Important note for weddings: Check with your celebrant (minister, rabbi, priest, etc.) before choosing your music. Some faiths, houses of worship or celebrants do not allow secular (non-religious) music or particular selections. In addition, some may not permit particular selections to be performed during the ceremony itself or outside the walls of a house of worship. In the following list, please note: “The Angelical Hymn”, which does not fit exactly into any one of the following categories, is the most requested wedding recessional selection, because it sounds like wedding bells. It will work with music from any other category. Tastes change over time, so if you don’t see one of your favorites, please ask if it is still in Anne’s repertoire or if the sheet music is still commercially available.

  • Paul Hardy's Session Tunebook 2020
14 Sep, 2021 Paul Hardy’s Session Tunebook 2021 Introduction This tunebook contains tunes I have learned to play on my English concertina, that are played at folk music sessions: particularly around Cambridge (England) and Redlands (California), and at some UK concertina gatherings like those of the WCCP in Somerset. They should also be playable on other folk melody instruments like fiddle, whistle, flute, or dulcimer. Most are traditional tunes from the British Isles, including many English, Irish, and Scottish dance tunes, but others are an eclectic mix of session favourites. Many have been learned by ear or handouts from various sessions in the UK and US, while others have been adapted from Internet resources, in abc, midi or visual score formats. All are believed free of current copyright (unless noted explicitly), or else appear to have been placed in the public domain as part of the ongoing live folk music tradition. Please let me know if you are the owner of any that are under access restrictions and I’ll remove them, or provide appropriate attribution. Thanks go to those who gave permission for copyrights of the few modern tunes, such as Andy Cutting. Particular thanks to Kathryn Tickell of Coquetdale Music Publishing for Northumbrian tunes by herself, Billy Pigg, Willie Taylor, and Will Atkinson. I have tried to present simple versions of most tunes, without much decoration and interpretation, so add your own triplets, grace notes and variations. I have included guitar chords, sometimes refined from computer-generated ones - use these as guidance, not definitive! Tunes in 4/4 time that have the rhythm indication "Hornpipe" should usually be ’swung’ - lengthen the first and shorten the second in every pair of quavers - as in "Thursday".
